51-Year-Old Actor Marries 16-Year-Old Girlfriend

They keep calling him "Lost actor" or "Green Mile actor"... but you know where best I know him from?

He was EUGENE VICTOR TOOMS on The X-Files.

I think this is even creepier than his XF character.

The comments are all like, "She's not 16, look at her." While I'm not discounting the possibility that it's all a publicity stunt, I'm sorry but it is quite possible she is 16 regardless of what she looks like. Have you seen teenagers these days???

First things first, here's a Living Social deal for 2 Fandango tickets for $9. Considering one matinee ticket these days is $8 (or if you live in LA, $10), two for $9 is an excellent deal. Enjoy!

Sold my two first-gen Nooks on eBay, though one has yet to make payment so we'll see. My second-gen Nook arrived yesterday, and I'm still trying to adjust to it. The software seems a bit buggy at times, though the full touch screen is pretty cool. I guess I didn't set up Calibre correctly with it or something, because I couldn't get the books on there right -- they're all in individual folders, which is weird, and none of the epub files are working (I get an error that says it's a format the Nook doesn't support), which is even weirder, because isn't that the Nook's main format? O.o

Also, if you have a Nook, let me know if you want to be Nook friends so we can share libraries and lend books to one another. :D (We have to connect through the email address that's registered with BN.com, though.) I tried it out with [personal profile] akscully and it seems to work. She has lent me a romance novel and the Holy Bible. That's how she rolls.

Almost done with Lost S6. I'm watching the special before the finale, and I finally have stuff to say that isn't just mainly "WTF?" Spoilers. )

There are three reasons I haven't been watching The Vampire Diaries:

1) I rarely watch ANY television during its original airing. I usually watch TV on DVD, so I'm almost always a season or two behind. Shows I love like Mad Men, House, Lost, Arrested Development, Gilmore Girls, Prison Break, Rome, How I Met Your Mother, etc., I watch/watched on DVD. There are a few rare shows that I try to keep up with in real time, like Glee and S4 of Dexter, but that requires watching on Hulu or downloading a torrent, which I am too lazy to do for most shows. It sucks because this means I am more sensitive to spoilers (an entire season could be spoiled), but it's also nice because I can skip commercials AND watch episode after episode of one show and watch events unfold in a less disjointed way.

2) I hate Twilight and am resistant to anything that appears to try and win audiences over because it's trying to take advantage of the 'hot new thing.' I am skeptical there could be quality there for that reason, particularly because the 'hot new thing' it's trying to take advantage of is so low quality to begin with that it's obviously not aiming toward discerning audiences.

3) I LOVED the L.J. Smith book series. I read them as a teenage girl, before Buffy came along and made vampires cool, and it was one of my favorite series. So I was even more resistant to the show based on my skepticism that they would be able to do it well (given point #2) and my fear that they'd ruin something I had really loved. (And my fear that the series itself wouldn't stand up to the test of time.)

However, I've read and seen enough about the show at this point that I think I'm ready to give it a shot. I'm #8 in my library queue for the first season, but I think it's going to take awhile as there's only 1 copy available. Still, I thought it was going to be a show that I'd never watch, so the fact that I will do so eventually is a big step!

===

I'm also going to start watching The Shield. I don't actually know anyone who watches this show, but I've heard/read enough critical acclaim about it that I'd like to see it. I've gotten the complete series on DVD; it's kind of cool-looking, actually. It's like a big hardcover book, with little inserts for the discs.

===

My BSG Blu-Rays have come! I don't know now whether to start rewatching those or starting The Shield.

===

I'm on S7 of XF. It wasn't a bad season but I DREAD what's coming. Why did they attempt to do XF w/o DD?! Greedy fuckers. I mean, XF just isn't XF w/o Mulder and Scully. EVERYONE KNOWS THAT.

The Samantha resolution though, wtf? (The end of Closure is beautiful, however.)

Mulder constantly breaks my heart.

I'm interested in rereading my favorite fanfics from way back when, but I suspect a lot of them won't be available anymore. A lot of people took down their stories after they finally realized that having their real names associated with fanfic might not be such a good idea. I've already gone back to reread a couple, and those unfortunately did not pass the test of time.

I want to go back and rewatch S6. Again. Other than Agua Mala and Trevor it was pretty a much a perfect season, imho. Freaking Agua Mala, I spit on it.

===

I still haven't seen Lost S6. Or the latest season of House. Or of course Mad Men S4. OMG so much to catch up on! I have tons of vacation, maybe I should take some time off and just watch TV the whole time. Hey, that'd be a pretty darn relaxing vacation.

===

I also want to rewatch Buffy again. Also Firefly, which I also just got on Blu-Ray. Maybe I'll do a Whedon binge after I've watched everything else mentioned here.

Making little improvements every day. Still have the sniffles and a cough, but I have to do less of each now. Yay. My sense of smell/taste is mostly all back though, so big cheer for that.

I think today I am going to attempt to make cream of broccoli soup for the first time (that wasn't from a can). When done well it's one of my all-time favorite soups, so I hope the recipe I'm planning to use is a winner. The best broccoli soup I've ever had was one they served at Kerckhoff Hall in the coffee shop while I was at UCLA. It came in a bread bowl, which is always a plus, but the soup itself was so. freaking. good. I don't know what supplier they bought it from or what was in it, but I've never had broccoli soup that good before or since.

I have some obvious TV show recommendations to make. Sorry they're so obvious but it's all I've got.

1) Mad Men - Mentioned this in my last post but now I've watched all 3 available seasons and I've solidified my opinion that it's a must-watch show. It's authentic, it's interesting, the characters are rich, etc. The bulk of S3 wasn't as good as the first two seasons, but by the end I was sold and am excited for what's coming next.

2) Glee - I've always had a soft spot for amateur singing groups/show choir type things, possibly because I can't carry a tune and have forever wished that if I could have any talent, it would be to sing. The show is so super fun, even if I find a lot of the characters annoying and/or useless (with the exception of Jane Lynch, who is a comedic goddess). I know that sounds weird. As a whole though, it just works. I've watched all 13 available eps now and miss being able to watch it; I looked forward to every episode.

I also just finished S5 of Lost, which... I enjoyed, but thought was the weakest season. I don't care what they say, some of the stuff that's happened in the past was so not part of some overarching plan. When you have characters going, "Oh yeah, I did that but it was fake/I lied," it's like, okay, yeah, that's them going, we didn't know what we were doing then and this is how we're going to retrofix it. I've also started, at long last, Battlestar Galactica. I'm totally years behind the bandwagon on this one. I avoided it at first because I've just never been into Star Wars/Star Trek-type things, and BSG seemed to be of that ilk. I'm enjoying it so far, so either I've grown more tolerant or it's different somehow. It helps that it's more science fiction than fantasy (more robots, less creatures with prosthetics and purple skin).

Today I went to the Seattle Tilth Festival. Because it was an usually warm September day, people came out in droves. My cousin said that it was usually a pretty empty festival, but today it was packed. You could tell the vendors were totally unprepared for the crowds because everyone kept running out of everything super early.

I didn't do anything but walk around in the sun, but it was exhausting. I'm glad summer's not over, but it doesn't need to be in the 80s. Mid-to-upper 70s will do. I also ate a huge hamburger. In reality it probably wasn't that huge, but I had already eaten other things by then and I couldn't finish. It's too bad, too, because it was a great burger. I got it from Skillet, which is a traveling restaurant. It's an airstream trailer that travels around and you have to go to their site to see where they're going to be next. They're famous for their burgers (using seasonal/locally sourced ingredients) and their bacon jam (tasted like pulled pork to me). I took pictures: here is the airstream trailer w/ people waiting to place their order, and here was today's lunch menu, which is written on the side of the trailer.

I bought a big bag of Bartlett pears, a pint of sun gold tomatoes (they were SO juicy and sweet it was like eating candy. Almost), and most excitingly of all, German Butterball potatoes! Why is this exciting, I pretend you ask? Because those are supposedly the best kind of potatoes to make mashed potatoes from, according to the Zuni Cafe Cookbook. But I've never been able to find them, so I always end up using Yukon Gold (which are good too). Now I have to make those buttermilk mashed potatoes again with these potatoes, to see if there's actually a difference. :D

And now, time for a meme, gacked from [profile] jade_okelani.

Pick five of your favorite shows, in no particular order, before you read the below questions, then answer them!

My shows:

1. Alias
2. House
3. Lost
4. Angel
5. Sex and the City

They were almost all one-worders until I got to S&tC, but I couldn't bring myself to exclude it.

Now we play 20 questions. )

Edit: And since I'm bored, here's another meme, gacked from [personal profile] ceilidh.

All about my journal personalization. )

You wouldn't believe how many Xterras I've seen on the road lately. And specifically, how many yellow Xterras. I passed by a Nissan dealership and there was even one in the showroom. I guess I can't blame anyone for wanting a bit of Logan in their lives. :)) Seriously, though -- I wonder how many of those sales can be traced back to VM. Speaking of VM, a horrible thought occurred to me. Spoilery musing. )

My mom is a cleaning machine. I wish I could be more like her. My place looks unbelievably awesome now -- I don't know how she does it. I mean, there's still lots of stuff I have to put away, but she cleaned the bathrooms and the kitchen from top to bottom (I don't even know where the mop is, so she totally scrubbed the floor by hand), and now, instead of one bedroom being "finished," all three of them are. Basically all I have to do now is tidy up the bonus/family room, and that's it. And even that looks very uncluttered now. Did I mention that I finally got my office desk? And that it's the most awesome thing ever? I'll have to take pictures. Next order of business is to get myself a digital camera. It's one of those things that I've let slip by me, for some reason. It's like, am I living in the stone age or something, when even my parents have one and I don't?

Well, Talis is back. He's much better behaved now, but I don't know how he'll be after having to spend hours and hours by himself, day after day. :-S I am seriously considering getting another dog, although the thought of two dogs exhausts me -- particularly if one isn't house trained. More doggie woes. )

I failed to get my mom interested in Veronica Mars. Turns out she's not interested in shows about school-age kids, and was only into Buffy due to the supernatural aspect of it (she loves horror movies and the like). However, she is really into Lost, so I have sent her home with my DVDs. What could be spoilery info, depending. )

Ever since my paid account lapsed, I have felt incomplete without all my different icons and being unable to change my mood theme and being limited as to my journal's layout. I was trying to be smarter about where I spend my money and was just about to cave, but [livejournal.com profile] ropo saved me. Now I can use 1 billion icons again, wheee! I think I'm way too lazy now to do any kind of customized layout, though. Maybe one day. Also, [livejournal.com profile] jade_okelani is the rockingest. She wrote 5 ficlets starring five of my OTPs! There's Mal/Inara, Dave/Georgia, Lex/Lana, Syd/Sark, and Draco/Ginny! (Speaking of D/G, the latest part of DV totally made me cry again. What is UP with that. I'm dying to see the last chapter. First, because I want to know how it all turns out, and second, because it will finally be done and I can move on. It's like the end of an era!)

WoW stuff. )

Also, it's been so crazy trying to keep up with the Bruins in college football. They've been incredibly lucky this year. I had totally given up on them in the Stanford game and went to dinner with my mom, only to check the score later and find, to my amazement, that they had won. They better get their act together, because their luck won't hold out forever, and they can't play that way against USC, especially. Until then, I'll bask in our #5 BCS ranking and undefeated status. :D

And that's all I have to say about that.

The geeky and overly anal chart of "Lost" connections. If you haven't seen the show, yes there are spoilers.

http://www.vanishingscroll.com/random/lost.htm

The connections that can be written off more easily as coincidences (considering they were all on the same flight) are in gray text.

Am I forgetting anything?

I wanted to start this entry by thanking several people for a) participating in the author auction at [livejournal.com profile] propheting; b) making such generous contributions; and c) giving me the impetus to get off my duff and write something, already. Here's my writing schedule for the rest of 2005:

1) Fic for [livejournal.com profile] dgficexchange, due early Oct.
2) Fic for [livejournal.com profile] chcltgddss, [livejournal.com profile] rainpuddle13, [livejournal.com profile] mynuet, [livejournal.com profile] bitteliten, and [livejournal.com profile] twiddlekinks. Their request: Portkey Party sequel or fluffy smut, with a mention of Cho.
3) Fic for [livejournal.com profile] kstanley. Her request: Sequel to Playing Dirty.

They really took me seriously when I said I would whore myself out, and that I would write stuff from my "won't write" section if they gave me incentive to do so. Well, I'll say they gave me incentive -- when the bidding got to $175 conscience dictated that I had to write both, for the goodness of the cause. And now between them, they've raised $355 for the Red Cross!! You guys kick ass. I have to call out [livejournal.com profile] kstanley and [livejournal.com profile] chcltgddss in particular, for not only being so generous in their bidding, but because they gave us all quite an entertaining show. Seriously, it was better than eBay. It took several hours for my heart rate to return to normal.

New York and Boston residents beware: The Okelanis are landing. )

'Lost' finale - spoilery comments. )

Also, does anyone know anything about gardening? A bunch of people I know are really into it, and a coworker lent me this awesome (he says) "complete guide to natural gardening," but I look at my yard and just don't know where to begin. Still, I'm determined to be a gardener. All I need is some soil, some seeds, a hoe or rake or whatever it is you use to garden, a water hose, and cute little garden gloves, and I'm set.
sarea: (Default)
Okay, first, does everyone know about [livejournal.com profile] propheting's Katrina relief fund efforts? Just want to make sure, because it's such a good cause (and you GET FIC!). Basically, you can bid on D/G authors to write whatever your heart desires, and the winning bid goes to the Red Cross. Most people don't even restrict what they'll write to D/G, so you can get them to write practically any pairing that interests you. Go check it out; some great authors are already up for grabs, so get your bids in (I'm not sure when bidding closes). Jade and I have both volunteered also, so I'll let you know when we're up (should be very soon).

Now on to the frivolous part of this entry.

1) My erstwhile roommates are now gone, and there's always this adjustment period I have to go through when I have company and then am suddenly alone again. There's this jumble of feelings: sadness, relief, loneliness, fear. The sadness and loneliness get canceled out by relief (I really prefer to live alone), and the fear (absent the security that two other people in your house provides) pretty much goes away. Especially as the Brinks people came on Sat. morning and I now have an alarm that could wake the dead when it goes off. My new fear is that I'll forget it's on in the middle of the night, or the morning before I've turned it off, and wander out of my bedroom, setting it off and creating a false emergency for law enforcement people. (And btw, yes, there is a way to turn the alarm on, but leave the motion detectors off. Whew.)

2) Fanart! [livejournal.com profile] twiddlekinks drew Draco and Cho from "Playing Dirty"! It's super cute, and brings back some fond memories of the writing of that story. <3 Also, it took me until now to find this beautiful D/G drawing by [livejournal.com profile] starlettegurly, which she says was partially inspired by "A Bed Made for One." Yay! I'll totally take "partially inspired" by the mega-talented Kara. And last, but not least, here is the Luke/Lorelai by [livejournal.com profile] tiny_q that I commissioned for Jade's birthday. Seriously, is it not awesome? I don't know how all you artists do it.

3) My Lost S1 DVDs arrived last week. I'd never seen the show before, and have thus far avoided all mentions of it on my flist so as not to get spoiled. I was spoiled on something (fairly minor) when I was still watching Alias and would turn on the TV too early, but other than that, I began watching with a fairly clean slate. After Jade and Robbie left, I was pretty much glued to the TV. I've now almost finished all 6 discs, and I think I'm either at the finale or two eps from the finale.

My thoughts so far... (spoilers) )
