WTF is up with the price of glasses? Why the hell are they so freaking expensive?? I decided to get a new pair last week, and with the frames I picked out, with the thinnest possible lenses, and the best anti-glare coating, it came out to be $568! WTF? And I've heard of others who've had to pay even more than that. (With my vision plan I ended up having to pay "only" $388.) Seriously, it's highway robbery! They're bits of wire and plastic and glass! That's it! How is it that you can get a freaking awesome computer for like $400 these days, yet glasses (the "technology" for which has been around for hundreds of years, so you would think they've found cheaper/more efficient ways to make them) can still cost this much? Not to mention, people typically keep their computers for ~3 years, I don't know anyone who gets a new computer every year. And yet vision prescriptions can change very easily from year to year (even if not significantly)! This is another reason (other than comfort/better vision) that makes me just stick with my (hard/gas permeable) contacts.

I finished The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Spoilers. )

This weekend I made some delicious pesto from the basil in my garden. It's just not growing fast enough for me! Even though it's back in the 60s today, the last week or so has been really great, weather wise. I hope it stays like this for another two months, at least. A few little tomatoes are coming in, but they seem stalled in their growth. >< I have a ton of flowers on my various tomato plants now, but not very many of them have turned into actual tomatoes yet.

I have now seen the cat that's been molesting the catnip. And oh. my god. It's ENORMOUS. The catnip plant never had a chance. The other morning I saw what I thought was a cat perched on this ledge near the SFG. I looked and looked and was like, is that a cat? Or is it a really big rock that I've never noticed before? And I thought I saw a bird perch on it, so I was like, oh, must be a rock or something. When I came back from taking Talis on his walk, it was still there, so I was like, yeah, a rock. And then it moved. And lifted its head up. And I saw then that it was just a really, really big cat. It's like 3 times Jaime's size, I swear. He's cream colored, mostly, which would explain the cat hair I've found on the catnip plant, with dark fur on his head and paws. I can't get over how big he was. I went out in the yard and he left soon thereafter, nervous about me I guess.

TV Show Meme: Day 11 - A show that disappointed you: Dollhouse

I was really, really excited about this show. The premise seemed AWESOME. And it was Joss! And Eliza! It seemed like it was going to be a guaranteed success. I don't know who to blame for why it didn't live up to expectations. I'm least inclined to blame Joss, who's proven himself time and again with Buffy, Dr. Horrible, Firefly, etc. The network, which didn't seem to "get" the vision and wanted to dumb it down? I know that was a big part of it. When are those fuckers going to learn to just leave genius alone?? Eliza, who it turns out, can't act her way out of a paper bag? Unfortunately, this was fairly significant as well. It turns out she can play the badass girl with a chip on her shoulder, but that's about it. The rest of the cast was good, with the exception of the dude playing the FBI agent. I ending up liking him in BSG, but he was all wrong for Dollhouse. At least, from my viewpoint. Not only was I not into the actor, the character in general was pretty annoying and useless. Plus, I have to say, the way they were handling the premise wasn't at all what I envisioned in the beginning. It didn't really make much SENSE, and I'm not sure if that's because of Joss's vision or because of what the network had done to eff it all up.

One of my big pet peeves: people who rush into an elevator when it opens. By "rushing" I mean "can't even wait for the people already in it to get off." I work on the top floor. If you're waiting for the elevator on that floor and there are people inside when it opens, most likely they need to get off (it's rare for people to have gotten on the 'wrong' elevator going up when they need to go down), because there's nowhere else for them to go. Even on any other floor, pause before entering to make sure no one wants to get off. Because you know what? Even if you're an asshole who rushes into the elevator before anyone can even exit (which I find extremely rude), YOU'RE STILL NOT GOING ANYWHERE UNTIL THOSE PEOPLE HAVE LEFT. So now you're not just a rude asshole, you're also stupid. It saves you NO time to be that rude, so why do it?

I made a shepherd's pie recently, and S. liked it so much that I was 'forced' to make another one 2 days later. It's easy and delicious. I mean, what's not to like about ground beef mixed with veggies then topped with a layer of mashed potatoes and baked?

A week from Tuesday, I'll be boarding a plane for LA. How crazy is that? I guess it probably feels more crazy to me than to you. :)) It just seems so SOON. Officially I'm going to be on vacation for 2 weeks, until the end of December, then the first week of January I'll be working remotely from LA. But that'll be fine because then I can still have lunch/dinner with the folks down there, and it'll be sort of like a vacation without actually taking up any of my vacation hours. Though I do have a ton of those. I just have to remember to take Talis to the vet to get his health certificate after the 10th but before I leave, so that I can use the same certificate going and coming (otherwise it's another $70!).

I had my first physical therapy session for my back (from the car accident) on Monday. Hopefully it's going to go well. It's not like the pain is severe/debilitating, but it's there, and after hearing all the horror stories about people who have life-long problems with their backs after an accident I'm not taking any risks.

Re: Amanda Knox. A verdict in her trial is supposed to be announced in about an hour. Obviously I haven't heard everything the jury's heard, but from the details I've read I'd be surprised if she weren't guilty (whether there's actually enough hard evidence to convict her, I don't know). I mean, changing your story multiple times (in big ways) is just a terrible move, whether you're guilty or not. It makes you look guilty as hell. Motive and opportunity are also easily established with her. I do have to admit though that I might be biased because I just plain don't like her. She seems like a really selfish, stupid, and airheaded person. That doesn't make her a murderer, of course, but it sure doesn't make me bleed for her. Edit: She was found guilty. Her sentence was 26 years, which to me is weird. It's like the jury is saying, "We're pretty sure she's guilty." Because if she actually did kill her roommate, she and her ex-bf/accomplice deserve the maximum penalty, since it wasn't like, manslaughter. But if the jury had any doubt about whether or not they were guilty, the two should have been acquitted. So the 'short' prison sentence for murder seems weird to me. Of course, they're appealing, so it may not even be that eventually, anyway.

I'm sorta sad about Dollhouse being canceled. The show was progressively getting better. But I do think that the execution (whether Joss's fault or the network's) wasn't nearly as good as the concept. The worst part was unfortunately Eliza Dushku in the lead role. She was a serious disappointment.

It took me years, but I've finally read Jhumpa Lahiri's Interpreter of Maladies. I've had the book for a good long while, but for some reason just didn't get around to reading it. I don't know why -- it's a quick and interesting read. I've also started The Namesake by her, and put her latest book, Unaccustomed Earth, on my PBS wish list. IoM won the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, and after reviewing the list, I noticed that I actually have a lot of those books. It's made me want to start a project of reading each one.

This morning I started preparing some sourdough starter for the kalamata olive loaf (or loaves, rather) that I hope I'll be able to mix tonight. The starter is in the proofing box, so I'm hoping that it will be bubbly and yeasty by the time I get home (or at the very least, by tonight) so that it'll be ready for the final dough. My cousin's husband has asked me before if I've made olive loaves (I haven't), so I know he's interested in trying one. I figure if I'm going to be there this weekend I might as well bring some bread as well (though my cousin hasn't gotten back to me on her preference for the menu, which is annoying because I have to PREPARE). BTW Jade, how is your sourdough starter doing? The other day I had some extra starter that I didn't use, so I ended up drying it so that it can be safely shipped and/or taken with me when I go places.

My mom and aunt are arriving early next week, and my mom has requested that I make the Chinese bakery-style hot dog buns for them, as well as raisin bread. I'm like, since when did I start taking requests?! I still have a few hot dog buns frozen from the last time I made them ... how bad a daughter would I be if I just defrosted those instead of making a fresh batch? >.> Actually I'm happy to make bread for people I like; it just takes a long time (wild yeast take WAY longer to work than commercial yeast, because their numbers are so much fewer) and all this is happening in a matter of days.

Okay, I haven't talked about this so ... Dollhouse season finale thoughts )
sarea: (Default)
Ugh, so much to post about when I haven't posted in awhile, which makes me want to not post, which makes the list of things I need to catch up on even longer. I know y'all have been through that at some point or another.

First I want to share some of the food I've been making.

Pics and links to recipes. )

I've also finished a few books -- the aforementioned CMwA, as well as Ruth Reichl's other book, Tender at the Bone, which [livejournal.com profile] ropo got for me at some bargain book sale for $2, yaaaaay cheap good books! TatB and CMwA might as well be one book, as the latter starts right where the former ends, and reads like one book. The first book I ever read by her, Garlic and Sapphires, picks up after that, but is slightly different in tone ... or at least, I think so. I've also finished The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay, which was excellent. I just don't see how the movie could do it justice; it's just too packed with people and events to translate well to a 2-hourish movie, I think. I could be wrong.

My favorite Dollhouse episode so far is "A Spy in the House of Love," which is quite a lame title but was an excellent ep. I hope it'll continue in that trend.

The other day I downloaded that screener (or whatever it's called) version of the X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie, and watched it yesterday. Other than some of the special effects looking quite cheesy in their uncomplete form, I thought it was fairly entertaining. They didn't show enough of Gambit in the trailers for me to recognize him, and the actor's name didn't ring any bells with me. It wasn't until I saw him in full light that I realized it was Tim Riggins. Heehee. Also, Agent Zero, played by Daniel Henney? Really hot. He's half Korean, and the first time I ever heard of him was from [livejournal.com profile] akscully, who recced a Korean movie he was in. Glad to see he's getting work in Hollywood, because he's ridiculously good looking. Here's a pic if you don't believe me.

Finally, some financial/investment stuff. Cut because I do go on. )

I'm still playing WoW, though way more casually than I used to. I'm considering going deep discipline for my priest, just to try it out. I'm also really enjoying my rogue, who is 67 atm, and am considering making her my main. But we'll see if my interest stays to even get me to 80.
sarea: (Default)
Thank y'all for indulging my immodesty re: the bread yesterday, lol. I was obviously way too excited. I was even MORE excited last night when, after 4 failed trials, I finally made real, perfect macarons. They're a French cookie (not to be confused with macaroons) that are made up of simple ingredients, but are incredibly difficult to perfect, because it's all about technique, getting the consistency of the batter right, etc. I don't think my technique's perfect yet, even though it worked this last time (quite by accident), but I think I know enough now that I can reasonably expect to be able to make them again without all the failing. Hopefully.

After talking with my cousin I've rethought my investing strategy yet again. She's done a lot of research on money management, and has a head for this kind of stuff like I never have. She counseled that if I was interested in investing in real estate, that I ought to consider investing in REITs as part of my Roth instead, and use any extra funds I have lying around to invest in mutual funds, as stocks are at bargain prices right now due to the economy. But history has shown that the stock market, which runs the world economy, goes through cycles and of course will rise again, and I'm young enough that I can ride out the tough times (even the Great Depression "only" lasted 10 years). She, and my dad, have pointed out that at the very least, I could pay down my current mortgage, as well as look into refinancing. Anyway, lots to think about. I wish I had a head for this kind of stuff.

[livejournal.com profile] jade_okelani and I have finished the Mortal Instruments trilogy. I really enjoyed the universe Cassie created, and it was a fun, if slightly predictable (but in a good way), ride. Jade and I are even going to collaborate this weekend, which we haven't done in, well, YEARS, to revive our HPverse WIP, If You Only Knew.

I forgot to write about the latest Dollhouse, so here's some brief commentary. )

My cousin and her husband found their copperware and have given them to me. There's a pot, 2 frying pans, and a very small saucepan (I've always wanted a tiny one like this, to heat up oil and such). They are RIDICULOUSLY heavy, like my Le Creuset pots. And I looked for copper pots for the first time online and ... wowzer. Okay then. I think each piece probably cost around $200 (with the exception of the tiny saucepan at maybe half). It makes me glad that I paid for our dinner at Spring Hill.

Speaking of which ... we went on Tuesday, the last day of the Dine Around Seattle promotion. It's a restaurant in West Seattle that K. had been to before, so we didn't do our usual thing of ordering all different things and instead just ordered the stuff she knew was good. And I took my camera, like I wish I had for Crush! (Speaking of which, my lavender soap arrived. Smells so good.) I also posted this to [livejournal.com profile] food_porn, but they've been kind of slow with getting posts up recently. Sorry for the dupe for those who watch that community, but it's all behind a cut anyway. Onto the photos! )
sarea: (amanda cheese curls)
Work has been hellishly busy lately. I want to say more, but frankly, to give it any more time than I already have is way more than it deserves.

My cousin and I went to Chez Shea for their 3-for-$15 lunch yesterday (her suggestion)! It was good, but I must say, I'm glad [livejournal.com profile] corianderstem and I ended up going to Crush instead. We had... )

My cousin and her husband have unpacked their super expensive copper pots and are ready to give them to me, woot!! I'm going to try and make it over there either on Sunday or on Tuesday so that we can go to the 3-for-$30 dinner at Spring Hill, as that will be the last day of the promotion. It'll depend on if the La Compagnie de Provence soap I ordered has arrived by Sunday, as I'm planning to give one of the bottles to my cousin, who loves the scent of lavender.

In house hunting news, my dad has suggested that maybe it's not a good idea to be buying a second home right now. Sigh. Honestly, he's worn me down so much by now with all his back and forth that I don't even care anymore. It's not like I'm dying to take on another mortgage, and if I miss out on this opportunity, well, it won't be the first nor, I'm sure, the last time.

Well, my bracket is pretty much ruined. Stupid Memphis. Seriously, wtf! I'm just cursed. My self-made brackets are crap, and now when I've followed a perfectly legitimate computer-generated bracket, it too is crap. Sigh.

Borders has their 40% off coupon circulating, so I took the opportunity to get City of Glass, the last book in the Mortal Instruments trilogy, and the Watchmen comic. I've heard that the movie is a lot better when you know all the backstory. :D

Sometimes, I really wish I still lived in L.A.. A ready-made list of NY-style pizza places!! If I could only find ONE such place here, I'd be happy.

I've been watching Angel again. I'm on the S2 finale, with them all stuck in Pylea. BTW [livejournal.com profile] jade_okelani, I finally see what you were on about all those years ago about the sudden change of personality in both Angel and Cordy. I still don't think I mind as much as you did/do (and I definitely agree that they could have achieved the same thing, particularly with Cordy, with a little time and patience, rather than just making it a presto-change-o thing), but at least I finally see it.

Speaking of Joss Whedon shows, I have seen the famed sixth episode of Dollhouse. Dollhouse 'Man on the Street' )

Meanwhile, I have made THE most delicious chicken carbonara two days in a row. It's very simple. Unfortunately no photos of it have come out looking as good as it tastes, so I'll just keep trying.

Dollhouse Ep 4, 'Gray Hour' )

Well, the dinner party went well. It started snowing midday yesterday, so I was even more ambivalent about going. I forced myself to get out of my comfort zone and stop being such a hermit, so I went anyway. The roads were icy and slick, but not terribly so, although there was a stretch of the 405 that was totally backed up due to some asswipe stopped in the middle of a lane. It always amazes me when I go to one of these things -- "This is what adults do," I think. Have dinner parties with nice food and intellectual discussion. But in a good way, not in a stuffy way. Other than C. and her husband I didn't really know anyone, but there were only 7 people total so I didn't get that claustrophobic, "OMG room full of strangers" feeling.

Since it was cold and had just snowed, it wasn't really a barbecue. They did cook the lamb roast in the barbecue, but it was more of a thing where everyone stayed inside and occasionally C.'s husband would go out and check on it thing. I even got to try something new -- a special Italian pasta that's extra long and colored with SQUID INK. It tasted like regular pasta (disappointingly -- I kind of wanted to be able to taste the ink, especially after reading Garlic and Sapphires, because Ruth Reichl mentions it during one of the dinners she has), but the black noodles with the red tomatoes, green scallions, and cream-colored pine nuts made for great visual appeal. The pumpkin pound cake was OK. I think the adaptation was very good; it was just that the base recipe wasn't all that. Pictures and more commentary about the food here.

Right now I'm trying something simple and new. I've got a bunch of seared, country-style pork ribs in the slow cooker, along with a bottle of BBQ sauce. I can't remember where I got the idea from; some community or food blog I was perusing. It smells just totally awesome -- we'll see how it tastes in an hour or two!
sarea: (Default)
I can finally reveal this month's Daring Bakers challenge: a Chocolate Valentino cake. It had 3, and only 3, ingredients: chocolate, butter, and eggs. You might guess it was a pretty rich dessert. <g> It's probably one of the very rare times I've ever enjoyed batter (I might as well confess -- I don't like cookie dough either!). More details here. I got a great shot of melty chocolate goodness.

I've now seen Dollhouse ep 3. )

All sets of Buffy except S1 have officially sold, which means that I can stop feeling that twinge of guilt for buying a whole other Buffy set just because I want to save shelf space. It actually went a lot faster than I thought it would; I wouldn't have guessed that Buffy sets were still so desirable.

I've started HYD the Korean version. Cut because only akscully cares! )

Thoughts on Dollhouse ep 2. )

Exciting news: I've found a good burger joint on the East side! This may not be interesting to anyone but me. )

It snowed last night, and the skies are clear today, which means that it is absolutely freezing. Brrrr. Actually we're getting some cloud cover now, so here's to hoping I won't have to feel like I'm getting frostbite every time I walk Talis.

Once a year or so, nice restaurants (nice as in classy, not as in kind) in Seattle will get together and do something called Dine Around Seattle. They'll offer prix fixe meals at much lower cost than restaurants of their caliber usually charge. I think they already did this fairly recently. However, possibly because of the bad economy and wanting to get people into the restaurants, it appears they're doing it again. 30 restaurants offering 3-course $30 prix fixe dinners. And these are the nice restaurants, such as Crush (typically the chef tasting menu there is $125/person).

My cousin and I went to Rover's and Restaurant Zoe a year or two ago when they did this. We missed it this time around -- or so we thought. This time, excitingly, some of the restaurants (not Crush) are doing lunch as well. Still 3 courses (appetizer, entree, dessert), but for only $15! That is SO worth trying out these high-caliber restaurants with their "famous" chefs (at least in Seattle). It lasts until March 31, so if any other Seattlites want to meet up for lunch at one of these places, let me know!

I'm liking my haircut a lot better now. Sometimes it just takes a day or two for it to "fall into place."

A couple of days ago, I went to Circuit City again. I guess I keep hoping I'll find a good deal there someday. At the time, they said it was the last 6 days of their liquidation sale. The place was pretty cleaned out, though they did have a bunch of Guitar Hero games (none for Wii). I got on the phone with Jade, and of all the things I found that I might remotely buy, I could get the same or better price online. Even with 50% off or so. Which kind of speaks to the problem with Circuit City in the first place, doesn't it? I may drop by one more time to see whether I can snag a really good deal on a TV, if it's like, the very last day, but I'm not counting on it.

I was going to do that album meme, but I don't have image editing software here so I'll have to wait till I get home. Boo.
sarea: (liz lemon sandwich)
OK, who else caught the premiere of Dollhouse? If you missed it, it's currently on Hulu (I don't know how long it's going to be up). My thoughts. )

=========

Strange or not?

I have a coworker who I'm friendly with. (Grammar nazis -- is "who" or "whom" correct in that sentence? I've gone over and over it in my head to the point where now it's meaningless, and I'm second guessing myself re: the object and subject, etc. etc.) She's Asian, was born in Singapore, lived in Korea for a bit, but lived for many years in New Zealand and moved here from there. She misses Asian food, so we try to have lunch once a week and I take her to the best Asian places I know (which aren't many). This includes Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. We've also talked about cooking, and last time we had lunch she was like, "Oh, I'll have to invite you over for a meal sometime! I can experiment on you." And I said sincerely that I would enjoy that -- because I love home cooking, and finding good recipes, and stuff like that.

So the other day, she pings me at work and says that she made some mint pea and ham soup, and wanted me to try it. So I gamely went over, and she was microwaving some obviously frozen soup, and from the discussion we had about it, I found out that this was soup she had made not recently, but had frozen to eat at a later time. Which is fine for stuff you make yourself or for your family, but to offer someone else that food? I thought it was a little bizarre, but I ate some of the soup anyway, which was fine (even though I'm not a big fan of mint in savory dishes).

THEN, yesterday, she pings me again and says, "I have some food for you." I thought perhaps she had made something and wanted me to try it. So I went over to her office, and she had brought me leftovers from a Korean dish she'd had the night before when she went out with her husband. It was a huge dish (I've been there and had it before) so she couldn't finish, and she said that she ordered it in mind to "share" it with me. I'm sure that the food itself is fine, that she didn't eat off of it (as in, she spooned from the dish onto her own plate), but STILL. Is it just me or is that totally weird? Why would you bring someone your leftovers?? And expect that they'd want it?? Because I'm sure it's fine and because she's my "friend," I don't want to make a big deal of turning it down, and I'll probably eat it ... but seriously. Am I being too sensitive and I'm the weird one?? I just feel like some weird social breach has been made somehow, even though there's nothing technically wrong.

=========

Buffy S4 has sold. I thought it would be the one to sell last, because who cares about Riley? In sell order so far: 2, 6, 7, 4. I can't believe no one wants the Faith arc, or what I think is possibly my favorite season (5). I'm going to guess that S1 will sell last, if at all, because it is the worst season of the lot (imho).

=========

So a couple of days ago, my cousin asked if I could be ready to do the dinner this weekend because next weekend was the 40th birthday of a good friend of hers. What could I say but yes? Recipe revisit + rambling. )

=========

[livejournal.com profile] akscully shared a link to the most awesome WoW machinima video ever. It's here. It's a lot more meaningful if you know something about WoW lore (I'd be happy to share if anyone wants to know), but even if you don't, you can appreciate the technical awesomeness. It really makes me want to write fanfic about it.

Embedding it here so I can come back and watch it over and over within the comfort of my own LJ. )

=========

After reading about so much good food, and finishing Garlic and Sapphires, I felt inspired to be more ambitious about trying new restaurants. That's what led me to Nara Japanese Restaurant in Redmond. BIG MISTAKE. The worst money I have ever spent -- and that is saying something. The food was mediocre, the portions were tiny, it was run by non-Japanese Asian people (which should have made me run out the door immediately), and there was practically no one there for dinner. With tax and tip it ended up costing $24, and I got sick the next morning. Seriously, I would take that entire night back if I could.

=========

Getting my hair cut at 3pm today. How I hope it won't be a big waste of money like that dinner.
sarea: (Default)
Amy Acker's going to be on Dollhouse!! As is Olivia Williams, who is a lesser-known actress I've always liked. The list of producers has a lot of familiar names. I haven't found a ton of info on who the writers are -- apparently Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain (from Angel) are the showrunners. Tim Minear's written a couple of eps, and so has Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen (of Dr. Horrible fame).

You might have noticed that I haven't yet shared Le Creuset pictures/news yet. I'm waiting on one last piece to arrive (technically two, as the lid counted as a piece), as it was mistakenly left off the initial order. I haven't yet used any of the ones I've gotten so far, and I want to wait until I've got the complete set before I take a group photo. :D However, this does mean that I have like, no space for anything. I already packed up a box of kitchen stuff, and I have 5 cast iron pans of varying sizes sitting out because I don't have cupboard space for them anymore.

I also mentioned awhile back that I was going to pick up my mom's designer handbags in December and sell them on eBay. I have the handbags, but given the current economic climate I'm not sure it's wise to list them now. Some are decades old; it's not going to hurt to wait a year or two to try and sell them. My theory is that the last thing people are going to spend their money on right now are frivolous items such as handbags, when so many people are struggling just to put food on the table. (Yet if that is the situation, would such people have been looking to buy designer handbags in the first place, ever?) My mom's theory is that since money's so tight now, people are going to be wanting second-hand goods more than in times of prosperity. Which may be true, and yet ... people who buy second hand on eBay are unlikely to have ever bought it new in the first place -- they would always buy on eBay, imho, except now they might not have the discretionary cash to do so. I don't know; it just keeps going around in circles in my head. What do you think??

Also, don't you hate it when you're lazy and don't do laundry in weeks, then wake up one morning and find that you don't have any underwear to put on except granny panties or thongs?
sarea: (monsters inc - shocked)
LMAO...

Eliza Dushku at Comic-Con supportingly describes Joss Whedon as a "career brassiere."

That is so what he is. Him, James Cameron, Judd Apatow and J.J. Abrams. Guess you need to find a director whose name starts with a J and start sucking up!

I can't effing wait for "Dollhouse" btw.
