I can finally reveal this month's Daring Bakers challenge: a Chocolate Valentino cake. It had 3, and only 3, ingredients: chocolate, butter, and eggs. You might guess it was a pretty rich dessert. <g> It's probably one of the very rare times I've ever enjoyed batter (I might as well confess -- I don't like cookie dough either!). More details here. I got a great shot of melty chocolate goodness.

I've now seen Dollhouse ep 3. )

All sets of Buffy except S1 have officially sold, which means that I can stop feeling that twinge of guilt for buying a whole other Buffy set just because I want to save shelf space. It actually went a lot faster than I thought it would; I wouldn't have guessed that Buffy sets were still so desirable.

I've started HYD the Korean version. Cut because only akscully cares! )

It's been two weeks since I made any kind of 'real' post, so here we go!

First, I've been making a lot of food. I haven't even posted it all yet. My food blog has the skinny. One thing I did want to share here, though, which is that this cake:

... was tossed in the garbage. :( It was my Daring Bakers challenge for November, and too incredibly sweet for, well, anyone. It's a shame too, because it came out well otherwise. The browned butter in the frosting really made for an amazing flavor. I knew when I first read the recipe that it had way too much sugar in it and I probably wouldn't like it (and this from someone who definitely has a sweet tooth!). I hesitated to lessen the amount of sugar, however, because that affects the liquid content and other factors of the cake, and I'm not yet comfortable enough with making cakes that I thought I could change amounts and still have it come out well. I suppose I might as well have, since it's going uneaten either way.

I had a very quiet Thanksgiving. It's just not the same when you live hundreds of miles from family and close friends. My cousin and I went to have hot pot, which was nice and comforting in its own way.

It's a little over two weeks until my winter vacation starts, thank God. I'm going to be in LA for 3 weeks. I'm so burned out, I can't wait to get out of here. All I need to do is get Talis to the vet after the 6th for a health certificate, and I'm set for everything else. I think. Speaking of Talis ... a few weeks ago I had a scare because I felt a little bump on his back by his tail. I took him to the vet and she said that she wasn't concerned because a) he's eating and behaving normally; b) the bump was really small; and c) it's common for dogs to start growing warts and skin imperfections as they get older. However, I needed to keep an eye on it. I think it's grown bigger. :( Not by much, but still, bigger is not good. Here's hoping it's just some kind of cyst or something.

I just got The Zuni Cafe Cookbook, but I wasn't allowed to read it until a few days ago (for reasons I will disclose later -- mysterious, ain't I?), so last night I settled into bed with it and it made me so happy, even though my stomach was growling after reading a few recipes. I just love the way it's written. It makes me want to take a trip to San Francisco just to eat there. I hope I get to, at least once in my life!

Also I wanted to thank [livejournal.com profile] jade_okelani for her birthday gift. See, Jade believes in the "birthday month," in which the month of your birthday is your whole birthday month. I said that no, one's birthday should only really be celebrated for the actual day of birth, not the whole month. However, she's converted me. Her gift was a month's worth of little notes and/or homemade jewelry, which I opened one per day, and they always brought a smile to my face. At the end of the 30 days (why couldn't I have been born in a month with 31 days? Oh well, at least I'm not a poor February baby), the 'real' present was revealed, which was this awesome scrapbooked picture frame, which not only has many pictures of us on various escapades, but also has little mementos of things that we collected while on those escapades. It is awesome. Yesterday was the last day of my "birth month" so now it's over and I'm sad. Still, I got to enjoy my entire "birthday month" so thank you Jade!

I've started to watch True Blood at the behest of a friend. All I have to say is, people who like the show but diss Twilight are total hypocrites. (If that's you, sorry, but it's true.) They are practically the same thing other than the locations and the ages of the protagonists. I don't hate either, but am not enamored of either. TB's been fairly entertaining so far, but far below the bar HBO has set for their many excellent TV shows. And the vampire lore so far doesn't hold a candle to the Buffy/Angel verses.

September's Daring Bakers challenge was lavash crackers (gluten free or regular -- I'll give you one guess which I chose), to be made with at least 1 vegan dip. I ended up making two: hummus and what I'm calling 'bright red salsa,' because I put diced beets in it and it turned the most extraordinary red.

Details, pictures and the recipe for the salsa here.

1. Warhmmer. I've been playing open beta and I'm meh so far. I'm still going to play it because all my friends are playing, but I think my hardcore days are over -- I'll be casual. The things WAR and WoW have in common, I think WoW is better done, and the things that are different are not compelling enough to me to get back into another MMO so quickly. I'm just way too burned out.

2. Moments when I feel old. The other day I was in Vent with some of the guys (calls to mind the days when I was always on AIM with other XF fic writers), and usually I don't really think about people's ages; certainly they sound like they're my age. But then moments happen where I remember that many of them are in their early 20s or even slightly younger. Such as when the subject of J.J. Abrams's "Fringe" came up. "It's like the X-Files for our generation," is how one of the guys described it. I was like, oh good lord, you know what was X-Files for my generation? THE X-FILES.

3. This is a bit late, but last month I participated in my first Daring Bakers challenge. The challenge was chocolate eclairs. My experience and detailed pics are at the link.

4. Just finished House S4. Very good season, though I'm mystified as to what they're going to do with the old/new cast. Jade shed some light on that subject, but until I actually see it in action, I'll remain mystified, I think.

5. My cousin J. and her family are in town to catch the football game tomorrow, so tonight we're meeting up with K. and her family to have fish & chips at this place that supposedly has the best fish & chips ever. Of course this would happen when I just went to Bonefish the other day and had, you guessed it, fish & chips. Gawd I'm such a slug lately. I need to get back to my good diet/exercise routine.

Before I get to the boring stuff that is my real post, I just thought I should do a PSA. To all the people who have me friended because of my ties to HP fandom and D/G love, I should warn you that my journal is going to be much, much less fandom oriented and much more me oriented (and my current obsession -- cooking/baking). That doesn't mean NO fandom stuff ever, but I wouldn't want to keep you here under false pretenses. Feel free to unfriend at will, or stick around, the choice is all yours, no hard feelings whatsoever. And now, the post...

1) I realized at some point that all the books and movies I was buying didn't actually need to be bought. Or in my house. So I've been trying to weed out the things I don't want (or realized I am never going to get around to reading) and either selling them on Half.com or eBay or back to Half Price Books, trading them at paperbackswap.com, or just donating them. And it is inevitable that something gets sold every couple of days, necessitating multiple trips to the post office. Why can't people just buy/request stuff all on the same day?!

2) I need to do the same thing with my clothes and CDs. I don't have that much closet space to begin with, and over the years with all the buying and the hoarding, stuff is like exploding out of drawers. I keep missing the deadline for the truck that comes every month or so to take away donated clothing. ><

3) I forgot to watch Acts 2 and 3 of Dr. Horrible before the Sunday deadline and now it's only on iTunes. Cry. Someone tell me what happens!

4) I've joined the Daring Bakers, with my membership officially beginning next month. Every month they do a baking challenge, chosen by that month's sponsor, and every single member bakes the exact same thing and are not allowed to talk about it on a public forum until the official posting day where everyone reveals their results. There are a number of rules to keep your membership, including having to participate in a minimum of 8 challenges a year (out of 12), not missing 2 months in a row, and providing photos/a run down of your experience with the challenge on your blog. It sounds really fun and challenging, as I've seen some of their past challenges and they run from the fun/easy to truly difficult/complicated. As a novice baker it will definitely help me with my range/skill, and help provide some direction to my projects. <g> So look for my first DB challenge result next month!
