This one was slightly more interesting than the last, though I'm still not super impressed so far. At least now we're starting to see some deeper backstory with the beginnings of the mytharc, because the assignment of the week stories are pretty lame. Plus, I don't like (even if I'm not surprised) by the idea that apparently the dolls can also be bought as whores. If they decide on their own (sort of) to sleep with someone they like, that's different than being programmed to want to sleep with someone. Ew.
There's not one single guy on the show thus far who I like or find attractive. The nerd guy reminds me way too much of Warren from Buffy, Echo's handler is way too much like Dixon (in that there's no sexual tension between them), and the Agent dude is just plain unattractive. Seriously, HOW did this guy get the job? He doesn't seem that great an actor and does absolutely nothing for me. Surely there are better-looking, more talented actors out there vying for a job on a Joss show? I really can't imagine there isn't. I'm not asking for a lame WB pretty boy, but maybe another David Boreanaz or the Sheriff from Veronica Mars or other guy who could at least grow on me? This guy's mouth/teeth are so terrible I could not imagine finding him desirable, ever.
I'm intrigued by this Alpha guy, but also kind of confused by the seeming contradiction of him. He killed all the dolls he encountered except Echo, who he apparently deliberately left alive, but then hired someone to try and kill her? WTF kind of sense does that make?
I always thought it was clunky, too, how the first episode of the show began with us seeing that scene between Olivia Williams and Caroline, apparently deciding to give herself over to the program. Why was that necessary? Couldn't -- shouldn't -- we have gotten to that eventually? What did that add? We learned her name and other stuff about her from that video we saw her in; did we really need to see the scene where she's obviously desperate and unhappy, then gets convinced to join? We could have guessed that, or it could have been revealed to us in a better, less linear fashion. (The Bourne movies come to mind.) I can't imagine there's a good reason for doing it that way, and yet it's so obvious that I also can't imagine Joss did it without reason. I guess I'll just have to wait and see, but that one scene almost undid the whole thing for me. It just starts everything out so weakly.
Exciting news: I've found a good burger joint on the East side! Everyone always talks about Red Mill, and I've been there once, but I don't really want to drive to Seattle just so I can go there. Now I have Wibbley's! I know, isn't that a great name? It's better than fast food, but not really a sit-and-serve restaurant like Red Robin. It's somewhere in between. Though I actually think the atmosphere is better than Red Robin. Even though you order at a counter, the decor is muted, almost wood-paneled, so it seems like a classy joint or something. The tables are high and made of polished dark wood, and so are the stools. Their menu is under 20 items, and they have like 8 burgers to choose from, along with a chicken, veggie, and fish option, ranging in price from $4.29 to $5.49. Fries are $1.19 for a half order, $2.09 for a full order. They also have shakes, but I haven't tried one. Their burgers are big, even though the patties are thin, but they're generous with the lettuce/tomato/pickles. And of course they have Wibbley's sauce, which everyone knows is a variation of thousand island dressing, as it is everywhere.
It snowed last night, and the skies are clear today, which means that it is absolutely freezing. Brrrr. Actually we're getting some cloud cover now, so here's to hoping I won't have to feel like I'm getting frostbite every time I walk Talis.
Once a year or so, nice restaurants (nice as in classy, not as in kind) in Seattle will get together and do something called Dine Around Seattle. They'll offer prix fixe meals at much lower cost than restaurants of their caliber usually charge. I think they already did this fairly recently. However, possibly because of the bad economy and wanting to get people into the restaurants, it appears they're doing it again. 30 restaurants offering 3-course $30 prix fixe dinners. And these are the nice restaurants, such as Crush (typically the chef tasting menu there is $125/person).
My cousin and I went to Rover's and Restaurant Zoe a year or two ago when they did this. We missed it this time around -- or so we thought. This time, excitingly, some of the restaurants (not Crush) are doing lunch as well. Still 3 courses (appetizer, entree, dessert), but for only $15! That is SO worth trying out these high-caliber restaurants with their "famous" chefs (at least in Seattle). It lasts until March 31, so if any other Seattlites want to meet up for lunch at one of these places, let me know!
I'm liking my haircut a lot better now. Sometimes it just takes a day or two for it to "fall into place."
A couple of days ago, I went to Circuit City again. I guess I keep hoping I'll find a good deal there someday. At the time, they said it was the last 6 days of their liquidation sale. The place was pretty cleaned out, though they did have a bunch of Guitar Hero games (none for Wii). I got on the phone with Jade, and of all the things I found that I might remotely buy, I could get the same or better price online. Even with 50% off or so. Which kind of speaks to the problem with Circuit City in the first place, doesn't it? I may drop by one more time to see whether I can snag a really good deal on a TV, if it's like, the very last day, but I'm not counting on it.
I was going to do that album meme, but I don't have image editing software here so I'll have to wait till I get home. Boo.

Date: 2009-02-27 01:31 am (UTC)I think the only place I've been on the list was the Steelhead Diner, which was really yummy. I'd be up for whatever, so if there's a place in particular you want to try, I'd be game for it!

Date: 2009-02-27 06:26 pm (UTC)I would REALLY love to try Crush, given that it's one of the 'nicer' restaurants on the list, but they're doing dinner only. Any interest in that at all (in addition to the lunch)? I'm trying to decide if I have the gumption to try and go alone.

Date: 2009-02-28 10:50 pm (UTC)Here are the places that would work best for me for lunch on a workday:
Steelhead Diner (right by the Market)
Earth & Ocean
Chez Shea/Chez Lounge
Barolo Ristorante
Art Restaurant and Lounge
Andaluca
I'd be up for trying out Crush for dinner as well, if we can find a night that works.

Chez Shea/Shea's Lounge
Barolo
Earth & Ocean
If we included Steelhead, it'd be #3. What do you think? Which menus do you like?
As for Crush, looks like they're closed on Mondays, so it'd be dinner on Sun, Tues, Wed, or Thu. I'd prefer to go on one of the weekdays, but if Sun is best for you, I'm fine with that!
