I have a bag of roasted plantain chips (recommended by [personal profile] adelagia -- they are DELICIOUS) by my elbow and I'm ready to talk TV.

I've finally finished The Wire. What a great, great show. I will definitely miss it, but in some ways it's a relief that it's over. It's hard to care about so many characters and then have terrible things happen to them. >.>

Spoilery spoilers covering the series. )

Game of Thrones 2x4 'The Ghost of Harrenhal' + book spoilers )

After finishing S1 of American Horror Story, I had no desire to watch S2. And yet I've just read an article talking about the next season, the fact that it's going to be focused on Jessica Lange (the best part of S1), the fact that many of the cast LIKE JL are actually returning, but in whole new roles... it's kind of intriguing.

I've started using MyFitnessPal again. I started it like 2 years ago, used it for a bit, then stopped. After my latest doctor's appointment, I felt inspired to go back to it. I really need to lose weight. I barely recognize myself anymore! Usually when I think of dieting, I get really discouraged because it seems like some far away goal, I won't see results right away, it'll take years do undo what I've done, etc. But right now I am on a "lose 1 pound a week" plan on MFP, and I realized that that meant if I really stuck to it, I could be close to my goal weight by the end of the year! An actual, real day that's within sight! So I'm giving it a shot. I have terrible self control, so we'll see. I keep telling myself that I did it before so I can do it again, but back then I had more things going for me -- I lived in a neighborhood where I could safely take long walks, I wasn't running a food blog (there's a certain amount of pressure to, you know, be making/consuming good food when you run a food blog), and I had good distractions... namely, World of Warcraft. >.>

It's made me want to play WoW again. I know, losing weight through playing WoW is like the antithesis of the image people usually think of when they think of video gamers (see South Park's "Make Love, Not Warcraft"). But for me it worked. In order to have fun, you have to interact with the game. Your hands are kept busy. I often ate only a bit of my dinner before I'd get distracted playing, and then I felt full. It's the opposite of watching TV for me -- when watching TV, I like to be doing something else, and eating is perfect. So I just eat and eat. Portion control is very difficult when I'm watching TV -- I don't eat until I'm no longer hungry; I eat until I'm stuffed.

So I'm going to try. Keeping the fitness diary really helps because 1) seeing how many calories something is, is really an eye opener; 2) I don't want to have to add stuff to the diary; and 3) it helps me realize what '1 serving' really amounts to. Last time I cut out, like, everything that was 'bad' -- ice cream, chips, fried foods, bacon, other junk food. I'm not going to do that this time because I think it was so restrictive that I had to fall off the wagon at some point, and I want something I can keep up with long term. Then again, last time I did it not to lose weight, but to improve my cholesterol. That seems under control now (at least so says the physical that I got in September), because I've generally been eating better (just too much of it).

I want to be able to wear all those nice jeans I've unearthed in my closet! LOL.

But speaking of bacon and TV... >.> Today is the last day I'll be curing my bacon. I had enough dry cure to cure it for 6 days, so I'm stopping here. Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall (the British "meat guru" whose advice I'm taking) says that a 5-day cure is perfect for breakfast slices. Longer cures allow the bacon to last for months, but become unpalatably salty (you have to boil away some of the salt before using). I obviously don't have some drafty shed in which to hang my bacon, so I'll just have to use his alternate suggestion and keep it wrapped in cheesecloth in the fridge. I've also been reading other food blogs about homemade bacon, and there's this ultra simple method of doing it (even simpler than what I did, which was already pretty darn easy), where you just keep it in a plastic bag the whole time with the cure and flip it over every other day to redistribute the liquid (because it does release a lot of liquid). Since I had two slabs of pork belly I probably should have tried one of each method to test which was better, but oh well.

Finished American Horror Story. Spoilery. )

Watched through ep 4 of Downton Abbey S2. )

How awesome does the new season of Game of Thrones look?! The trailer (thank you, [personal profile] akscully):

Also, [personal profile] ropo found this for me. We'll stop by the next time we're in Vegas. In fact, I think I saw this place the last time I was there!

Snowmageddon is upon me. So much snow everywhere ahhhh. It's particularly bad up north where I live; once you get out to the eastside and Seattle it's not quite as bad, but I think it's going to get there. Last night I did drive to West Seattle for the Spring Hill fried chicken dinner, and it wasn't bad at all once I was on the freeway. It was delish, as usual. They started doing 'flavors,' but the original is still the best. I still wish the sides were more traditional fried chicken sides, but I must admit that the spam musubi and macaroni salad are pretty darn delicious.

Obviously, this terrible weather happened just to keep me from getting/reading Death Note Vol. 7. SIGH.

I can't believe Sherlock S2 is already over. Seriously, three episodes does not make for a proper season. Sigh. Like S1, I thought the middle episode was the weakest...they probably do that on purpose. But unlike S1, I thought the finale was the best. Sherlock 2x3 'The Reichenbach Fall' spoilers )

I can't believe the Golden Globes came and went and I barely even had it on my radar. Also that the best picture/actor/actress/director winners were total unknowns to me (as in, the movies).

I'm amazed that Homeland won for Best Drama. Wow. I've been enjoying it from the start, I mentioned it a couple of times, but... I don't think it's that great. I mean, that's why I haven't talked about it much. No surprise on Peter Dinklage. Great choice on Jessica Lange -- she is fabulous in American Horror Story.

If anyone is on Dreamwidth, my name there is sarea. I actually always use DW to post and just crosspost to LJ because LJ is still where most people congregate. But I'm going to start including a DW footer with my posts, as perhaps eventually I'll just migrate there. Frankly I like a lot of things about DW more than LJ, not the least of which is that their entry length limit is a lot higher than LJ's. I don't really give a hoot about any of the recent changes LJ's made, but a lot of other people seem to, so whatever, I'm flexible. I probably should have just gotten sarea_okelani there too, to avoid confusion, but I've always wanted just plain sarea. LJ's "sarea" has made a total of two posts since they created the journal in 2001, and hasn't even made a single entry since July 8 of that year. -.-

This is one of the most heartbreaking things I have heard about recently. I can't help but follow all the reports about it, because it makes me so, so sad and angry. RIP, Danny Chen. You seemed like one of the best sort of people the world should have.

Jade and I want to see this movie "Haywire" that's coming out in another week or so. It's like Alias meets Salt meets Mr. & Mrs. Smith (well, the trailer's opening scene) meets City Hunter! Many A-list male celebrities... though the female lead not as much.

I've watched 2 more episodes of American Horror Story. Unfortunately, as [profile] corianderstem warned, it's already gotten away from being freaky and is on to being kind of hokey. I watched the "Halloween" two-parter, and it felt more like Buffy meets the X-Files than anything truly scary (perhaps appropriate since one of the writers was James Wong). Very different from the first 3 episodes, which freaked me the hell out.

The bad news is, apparently there's 12 cases of drug-resistant TB in India and this is how mankind will perish. The good news is, while I'm still alive and able to play Pandemic, I now know what to name one of the diseases.

I had the BEST dream last night. I dreamed that I was Ga Eul. And you know what that means, right? I got to be with Yi Jeong. It was AWESOME. You envy my brain.

Starting to watch American Horror Story right before bed -- not my best idea. I love the show, but it is freaky. It's not scary, which I think I could handle better. It just takes your mind into these creepy corners that kind of freaks me out. I was dreaming about it all night.

I hate the stock market. I don't have the right personality for it. I'm unhappy no matter how things go. If I sell at a good price, I am bitter if the stock price goes higher. If I don't sell at a good price, I am bitter that they're so worthless. It's totally a damned if you do, damned if you don't scenario. What's prompting this is that I have some stock options that are about to expire, and I'm totally stressed out over them. I sold some earlier, but am bitter because the stock went up after that. Now I'm bitter because the price is down from Friday. If I could be the sort of person who was happy at selling at a decent price, I could totally play the stock market. But I'm not. Thankfully my last set of options expire in July, so after that I won't have to worry about it anymore.

Now for more complaining. I don't know if anyone else has been through this, but it's REALLY annoying when you make a donation to a charity and they don't do all they can to maximize the funds they get. Example: Back in October, I made a donation to the Wildlife Conservation Society. My company matches up to a certain amount in donations per employee each year, and all the receiving organization has to do is confirm that the employee donated money to them and how much. Doesn't sound that hard to do, does it? No, and I know it's not, because of all the charities I've donated to over the years, not one of them has ever had any challenge in doing this. Until this year, with the Wildlife Conservation Society. In December, I received an email from the matching gift team saying that my donation still hadn't been confirmed. I contacted (by phone) the WCS, and spoke to a very nice person who said that they would get that taken care of and get back to me. I learned today that it STILL hasn't been done. And time is a problem, because if they don't confirm within 90 days of the donation being made, the matching gift request is closed -- they won't get the matching funds. In this case, they have 8 days. To do something so simple!! Which they haven't been able to do in the last 3 months!! If they don't confirm my donation so that they can get the matching amount, I'm never donating to them again. It's not like it was a huge amount or anything, but doesn't every little bit count? Especially when you can double it with very little effort? Plus, it doesn't exactly speak well of their competence, does it? If they can't do something so minor to get free money for their organization, either because they are too lazy or incompetent, what does that say about their efforts for wildlife? Obviously, I think preserving wildlife is a hugely worthy cause -- I'll just have to find another organization to make my donations to, one that I know will maximize contributions to its cause. I'll just regret that I gave money to them this year, since another worthy cause would have doubled it. This is the email I wrote the WCS today. )

I feel kind of bad being harsh with a charitable organization, but COME ON!

Other than American Horror Story, I've also seen everything that's aired of S3 of Community. God I love that show. "Remedial Chaos Theory" has to be one of my fave episodes of the show now. OMG when it was Troy's turn to get the pizza, rofl. I've watched the first episode of Misfits S3. It's weathering Nathan's absence fairly well, I'll give them that, but only because the new guy is interesting. Other than Kelly, the old characters have so far been boring/lame. Also! I've seen the first episode of the new season of Sherlock, "A Scandal in Belgravia." SO. GOOD. Even though I totally complained about how long it took them to get S2 to us, it's worth the wait. Some spoilery comments about Sherlock and this ep though. )

I've also started reading Deathnote, which [personal profile] adelagia recced ages ago. It started off really slow, but I'm in a groove with it now. I'm near the end of volume 3, and unfortunately I don't have volumes 6 or 7 so that's gonna suck. But wait! I have them on the hold list at the library! And now I'm #1! Oh I love being able to freeze holds. Spoilery thoughts. )
