So far so good on the kombucha front. I made the nutrient solution (which is a fancy way of saying "sweet tea"), stuck in the SCOBY, and now I just have to let nature take its course. It doesn't help though that it's cooled down considerably here, so the temp in my house may not be ideal for yeast to thrive. :/

Apparently there's a Kickstarter to make an American version of Boys Over Flowers. There's less than a week left and so far under $1k in support. LOL. All I have to say is... GOOD. American TV would never be able to adapt YA Asian drama well. The studios don't appreciate the *sanctity* of a pure-hearted, guilty-pleasure romance. They'd totally want to ruin it with intrigue or infighting or sex or whatever the hell else to break the couple up -- not to mention, would either try to cancel it prematurely if ratings aren't good, or if ratings ARE good, try to unnaturally extend the series well beyond anyone's enjoyment. It's fucking sad that that pretty much describes all American TV. They don't know how to tell a good story and then let it go. All they care about is MONEY.

Never let it be said that Asian dramas can't actively improve your life. Not only do they provide a bunch of happy endorphins and make you really hungry for good Asian food (it's funny/awesome, food is such a big part of the characters' everyday lives, whereas on American TV, food is pretty much an afterthought -- characters pretend like they're gonna bite into a slice of pizza but never do, they push food around on their plate or eat one pea, etc.), they also give you great ideas like a bath headband to hold your hair back when you're watching your face! Now I have four of my very own. It's not as nice as Kotoko's (from J-drama Mischievous Kiss, the latest remake of the manga Itazura Na Kiss, though the best remains Taiwan's It Started with a Kiss), but it'll do, pig. It'll do.

If anyone is on Dreamwidth, my name there is sarea. I actually always use DW to post and just crosspost to LJ because LJ is still where most people congregate. But I'm going to start including a DW footer with my posts, as perhaps eventually I'll just migrate there. Frankly I like a lot of things about DW more than LJ, not the least of which is that their entry length limit is a lot higher than LJ's. I don't really give a hoot about any of the recent changes LJ's made, but a lot of other people seem to, so whatever, I'm flexible. I probably should have just gotten sarea_okelani there too, to avoid confusion, but I've always wanted just plain sarea. LJ's "sarea" has made a total of two posts since they created the journal in 2001, and hasn't even made a single entry since July 8 of that year. -.-

This is one of the most heartbreaking things I have heard about recently. I can't help but follow all the reports about it, because it makes me so, so sad and angry. RIP, Danny Chen. You seemed like one of the best sort of people the world should have.

Jade and I want to see this movie "Haywire" that's coming out in another week or so. It's like Alias meets Salt meets Mr. & Mrs. Smith (well, the trailer's opening scene) meets City Hunter! Many A-list male celebrities... though the female lead not as much.

I've watched 2 more episodes of American Horror Story. Unfortunately, as [profile] corianderstem warned, it's already gotten away from being freaky and is on to being kind of hokey. I watched the "Halloween" two-parter, and it felt more like Buffy meets the X-Files than anything truly scary (perhaps appropriate since one of the writers was James Wong). Very different from the first 3 episodes, which freaked me the hell out.

The bad news is, apparently there's 12 cases of drug-resistant TB in India and this is how mankind will perish. The good news is, while I'm still alive and able to play Pandemic, I now know what to name one of the diseases.

I had the BEST dream last night. I dreamed that I was Ga Eul. And you know what that means, right? I got to be with Yi Jeong. It was AWESOME. You envy my brain.

Wow, I haven't updated in nearly 2 weeks? That must be some kind of (recent) record for me. Partly it's because it's SO FRIGGING COLD that I don't want to do anything but be in bed. Partly it's because my mom's staying with me (kind of last minute) for the whole month, and we've been spending a lot of time eating out. But mostly it's because I was on vacation all last week, and updating LJ is more fun when I'm at work. >.>

I've been making... dun dun DUUUUUUUN... fanvids

I've been stretching my creative wings. Rather than writing fanfic, I have made... two fanvids! It's much harder than it looks, but also fun. Even making fairly basic vids like I have is super time consuming. O.o I had no idea. The two vids are Yi Jeong/Ga Eul (from Boys Over Flowers) based, so there's only a limited amount of footage I can work with -- both a curse and a blessing.

If you're interested in watching them... )

Cool/fun cookbook/gift rec

If you need a cool coffee table book, or a fun gift for just about anyone (well, any adult), I recommend My Last Supper: 50 Great Chefs and Their Final Meals / Portraits, Interviews, and Recipes. I've been wanting it awhile and now I finally have it! It's really cool -- basically, 50 well-known chefs play the "death row" game (though they don't call it that): If they could choose their last meal, what would it be? Some, of course, get super fancy and specific, but a surprising number, maybe even half, would go for something really simple and comforting -- scrambled eggs, rustic bread with cheese, etc. The last part of the book the chefs share recipes from their selections.

Icon making!

Every three years or so, I get a bee in my bonnet and want to make icons. I've been playing around with textures and what not, and as practice, made some from past/present fandom interests. :D They're just for me, I haven't really made any that are intended to be shared out on icon communities or anything like that, but I think they look pretty good!

A bit of TV

I've been watching a bit of TV... caught up on Merlin (OMG!) and have watched the first six episodes of Once Upon a Time (I blame drunk![personal profile] akscully for this), which isn't GREAT TV or anything, but is fun enough to continue now that I'm out of TV I'm really interested in watching. Also I really like Jennifer Morrison (though Cameron > Emma).

My latest cookware obsession

CorningWare. That's right, the stuff our mothers (well, not mine, but you know) used to use. There was a whole thread about it on my foodies list at work, and now I really want to use it. But it should be noted, however, that I'm not talking about CorningWare as it exists today (at least, not 99% of it), but literally mean the stuff someone's mother used to use -- the vintage pieces from the 50s/60s. Know why? It turns out that that stuff was made from Pyroceram, a type of glass ceramic invented by a guy who was working on rocket nose cones (as part of a U.S. ballistic missile program). The beauty of glass ceramic, apparently, is its ability to resist thermal shock, which means you can cook with it on the stovetop, put it under the broiler, bake it, or freeze it (and all directly from one to the other, if you choose). You can use it like you would cast iron, except there's no seasoning involved, and unlike cast iron you can use it for tomato sauces/wet foods. You can even bake no-knead bread in it.

So what's wrong with the recent stuff? Probably more than you want to know. )

Happy 11/11/11! And it IS happy, because it just so happened to fall on a Friday, which makes me very happy indeed. I am done with The Longest Week Ever!

Last night, [personal profile] adelagia and I saw a pre-screening of The Muppets movie, and you guys, IT WAS SO GOOD. I was totally not expecting anything much from it, despite knowing that Jason Segel was nutty over it and he wrote (or rather, co-wrote) it. It was hysterically funny and I loved all the cameos. Personally, I'm not a Muppets fan. The Muppets and Sesame Street were both very pervasive things that I couldn't help but be aware of growing up, but I never watched either of them with any regularity (consequently, I often get them mixed up; case in point, after the last Muppet was introduced, I was thinking, "But there's still so many of them that aren't here yet... oh wait, I guess those are Sesame Street characters"). Still, I really enjoyed the movie, and I bet if I were a Muppets fan, I would have enjoyed it even more. As with Pixar films, I thought the material could be appreciated by adults a lot more than kids (there were plenty of kids in the audience, but they laughed at things like a Muppet running into a door, rather than actual funny things >.>).

I finished Goong. It had great promise but ultimately I feel lukewarm about it. It had such good leads and such a good guilty pleasure storyline, but it focused too much on unimportant storylines and didn't take full advantage of their utterly adorable heroine and hot hero. Unlike It Started with a Kiss and Boys Over Flowers, they seemed to actively resist putting their two leads together, focusing instead on keeping them apart. I totally understand that to a certain extent, because if you put them together too early, you don't have a show anymore. But ISWAK and BOF both toe that line MUCH more successfully, giving us plenty of the main pairing while keeping them believably apart. Goong, on the other hand, actually gave us very little of the leads together, and kept putting them with other people, to the point where it was hard to believe that they would feel something more for each other than those other people. I mean, why would they? They're opposites and "don't get along," but we don't actually get very much of them getting used to each other's eccentricities, the way we do in ISWAK and BOF.

ISWAK is still my favorite Asian drama. I also really like BOF, but the trouble with that one is that I enjoy the subpairing much more than the main pairing, and obviously there's less of the subpairing. Kim Bum and Kim So Eun are so ridiculously attractive and good together (see my icon!). A few more images. )

I am attempting to create a setup where I can connect my netbook to my big TV, so that instead of having to burn DVDs, I can just watch stuff through my computer. Usually I transfer video files to DVD because I'd rather watch them on my TV than having to sit at my computer. But once I get the right audio splitter, I will be DVD free! Only problem at that point would be that I wouldn't have a remote or anything, and the cable is too short to have my netbook actually near me when I'm watching TV. So if I want to adjust the video in any way, I have to actually get up and go to the computer to do it.

Tomorrow... Puerto Rican food with [profile] corianderstem! Woot!
