I am now only missing 7 license plates in the license plate game. In the last several days I've gotten Maine, Mississippi, Nebraska, and Connecticut. Of the 7 I'm missing, I've seen Kansas, Delaware, and Alabama, and didn't get any pics of them. :( Which will be the last state?!

A very quiet 32nd bday yesterday, which was nice. The more bdays that come, the less attention I want, it's weird. Had lunch with my mom at a Chinese bakery/cafe, because you're supposed to eat noodles to ensure a long life or something (so the superstition goes), then met my cousin for dinner at Spring Hill, where I had a potato and lamb's tongue salad (excellent), hangar steak (excellent, but prepared a bit too rare even for me), and pumpkin pudding. We already had my birthday cake last week, which was a good thing since I was completely stuffed and wouldn't have been able to eat another bite. I like chocolate, but I'm not its biggest fan -- if given the choice I'd almost always choose some kind of vanilla or fruit option instead -- but this chocolate cake from Bakery Nouveau is just out of this world. Possibly the best cake ever.

Talis's regimen for his ear infection has been going well. He hates the actual ear cleaning/ointment treatments, which have to be done twice a day, but it's slightly easier now that I muzzle him during the procedure. He still jumps up and shakes, but at least he doesn't nip at me. As for the medication, I had one really bad experience where he fought with me tooth and nail and only ended up eating like half a capsule, but I've now found the perfect vehicle for the pills -- the macaroni from the chicken noodle soup I made. They're extra big and swollen due to being cooked in the broth too long, and the little openings are perfect for hiding a pill inside, even the bigger ones, so now the medication part is cake.

My diet isn't going so hot, as you can imagine, with visitors and eating out a lot. >< Oh well. I'm getting the P90X workout vids and the plan is that S. and I are going to work out together. Yeah. I'm not really sure if that's going to work the way we envision, but at least we're attempting it? It will be much easier for him so we'll have to see how much I can endure. Plus I need to get on getting my treadmill repaired.

Finally, I've fired my gardener. Well, I had my mom do it, since his English is limited, she's fluent in his native language, and she's good at dealing with people. He was a nice guy and all, and my lawn looks OK, but given how much I'm (or I was) paying him, the frequency of his visits were not acceptable. We originally agreed that he would come every 2-3 weeks, but it's more like 4-5, and especially this last time, I think it's been even longer since he's been here. He charged about $1k for the year. A few months ago I asked some gardeners who were working on my neighbor's yard what they would charge to work on my house, and they said $30 every 2 weeks. That's less than what I was paying AND they would come more often. So yeah. Long overdue action on my part.

34 states down! Today was a veritable treasure trove of out-of-state cars. :D I got: Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Vermont, and West Virginia. I saw a ton of others that I already had, too. Wowzers, what is everyone doing in the Puget Sound? Not enjoying the weather, that much I know. It was in the mid-60s today after pouring during the night. So much for being in the 80s. Weather people are useless.

The Penn plate I got had the word "Pennsylvania" totally obscured by the license plate frame, grr. However at the bottom of the plate you can see "www.state.pa.us" so I think it still counts.

I also got a shot of this plate that is too blurry to read. Anyone recognize it? )

If you want to see what I'm still missing, I'm keeping a running tab here.

I went to Half-Price Books to buy the 4th book of the Song of Ice and Fire series, A Feast for Crows, as I don't have it, and found a first edition hardcover signed by GRRM. :D *geeks out* Anyway, my eye was drawn to the flap and I read some of it (I thought it was safe!! The summaries on the first two books are totally vague!) and WAS TOTALLY SPOILED ROTTEN ON SOME THINGS. Spoilers ahoy. )

I also got the 6th book in the Outlander series for $2. Sure, I only read the first two books, but one day I may go back to it! Part of the problem is that I loved the first book due to the Claire/Jamie relationship, and the focus of the books became less focused on that (at least, that was the case in the second book, and I assume subsequent novels, since they're no longer shelved in the romance section, but in fantasy). Plus with all the characters and historical events and time travel, it just got way too convoluted for my poor brain. Anyway, apparently it's finally being scripted for a film?! By none other than Randall Wallace (who did Braveheart, which was awesome ... but also Pearl Harbor, which was less awesome)?! Eeee!

Boy has it been an exhausting week at work. The fall is always a busy time, but damn, I miss the easy pace of summer.

Finally finished A Game of Thrones. Thoughts and such here. I decided to spare you all a million little posts about it and started just updating that one entry. If you like historical fiction, political intrigue, and/or fantasy, I totally rec it. A very enjoyable read. There's even sex and romance, and mysterious subplots about lineage ... which may be the most intriguing thing of all. :)) I'm going to start on the next book, A Clash of Kings, tonight.

License plate game update: Got Georgia! Missed Virginia and Iowa. Cry.

Made pear-caramel ice cream that is really yummy.

I don't know if I've ever mentioned this before, but Vietnamese cuisine is my favorite cuisine in the whole world (followed by French). I finally got myself a Vietnamese cookbook, and toyed with the idea of making every dish in it (it's MUCH shorter than Mastering the Art of French Cooking; that's not a project I'm about to take on any time soon), but the problem is that everything serves 5-6 people and isn't really conducive to being cut down.

It's supposed to be warm again this weekend, in the 80s. I'm pretty thrilled about that, since I'm definitely a warm weather sort of girl. But it is fairly unusual for these parts. Maybe it's the Eternal Summer! :D

I've been thinking to myself that I should get back on the writing horse. The problem is that I'm not really interested in any horses in the stable. Where are you, spark of creativity?

Happy 09/09/09!

I have resurrected [profile] demon_dog to make this post. Click only if you want to see pictures of, well, a demon dog.

So the salted peanut ice cream was a failure. It's still yummy, but it's basically just peanut butter ice cream. I used the fresh-ground peanut butter from Whole Foods, but that may not be the right choice for this ice cream. The peanut butter isn't entirely smooth, so it leaves little bits of peanut in the ice cream, which Spring Hill doesn't have. But most disappointing/perplexing of all is that I used 1/2 tsp of salt in the recipe, but it didn't taste salty at all. I used a similar amount in the butterscotch pecan, and you could totally taste the salt. Wacky. So now I have to try making it again with smooth peanut butter and 1 tsp of salt. I'm also going to try to make a richer, custardy version of the base.

Has anyone ever seen The Ramen Girl with Brittany Murphy? She so peaked with her sidekick role in Clueless; she's been entirely forgettable ever since. In fact, she's a detriment to the roles she's played. As for the movie, I don't think I have met a more annoying heroine since Becky Bloomwood of the Shopaholic series. Both of these women, I want to drop kick to another solar system. So. lame. and. annoying. omg. TRG heroine is super annoying and lame to begin with, but BM just makes it worse. Seriously, I wanted nothing more than to see her take her last breath on the streets of Japan. (Yes, it was like a poor man's version of Lost in Translation.) The only thing it did was make me really want ramen. Not the packaged/instant kind, but real ramen from a real ramen shop that makes soup and noodles from scratch.

New license plate find today: South Carolina. Score!

I've rented Top Gun from the library so I can watch it for like the 2749831258793th time. Come on, it's one of the best movies evah.

Today was a great day for out-of-state license plates. I even saw another Hawaii! I only wish I could have gotten the Kansas I saw, but I couldn't get to it without risking life and limb and making several traffic violations (I know, I'm so not committed). I've got 21 states so far. I'm still missing... )

Tonight I am going to attempt salted peanut ice cream. Expectations are high for this one; my cousin and I both LOVE this ice cream at Spring Hill, so if it's not as good as that, it's a failure.

Got back to my office today for the first time in over a week. There was a $15 Starbucks gc waiting for me, because I guess our team finished these internal training videos first of all our groups. Yay for 3 lattes. I combined it with my other Starbucks card, and now I have over $100 on it. O.o (It's slowly built up over the years, because it's a failsafe gift.) Not that I couldn't easily drink that many lattes, but I do try and show some restraint, for the calories if nothing else. I wonder if you can use those cards to buy other stuff, such as this espresso machine? My cousin just got one. I know, it would be such a ridiculous indulgence. Most likely I wouldn't get it. Probably.

What I did recently get are some Le Creuset silicone spatulas on eBay (again using BigCrumbs and Bing Cashback). :D I don't know why I waited so long. I finally decided I needed some heatproof spatulas that weren't made of wood (too susceptible to stain/retention) or stainless steel (so as not to scratch pan surfaces) when Robbie was here and the spatula I was using melted in the syrup I was making. Yeah. I thought it was heatproof. >.> Anyway, I did some research and while heatproof silicone spatulas (good because they're non-toxic, won't transfer to food, are non-stick, don't retain odors) are fairly common, they are usually heat resistant to about 500°F. That's probably good enough for any home cook, but given my penchant to destroy things, I decided to get Le Creuset ones, which are heat resistant to a whopping 800°F, lol. Let's see me try and do some damage to those!

Oh, also, today I got a whole large pizza for myself and I'm not sorry. Pagliacci Pizza (which is probably the best pizza we have around these parts, but doesn't compare at all to true NY pizza) has a seasonal pie of tomato and basil and it ends tomorrow or something. I've been meaning to try it, but since Robbie doesn't like tomatoes or basil, and since we never really had much opportunity to just go get a pizza, I didn't get to until today. It's good, but a plain slice in NY would still put it to shame. Sigh.

I just dropped [personal profile] ropo off at the airport. We went to one last HPB right before (in Tukwila), because we're nutty that way. Seattle is so sad she's leaving that it is crying copiously (aka, POURING RAIN). Goodbye, summer ... I hardly knew ye. /weepeth

During her stay, we:

* Went to Whidbey Island
* Gorged ourselves on lots of meals, many of which involved too much pasta
* Nearly got a speeding ticket
* Made 3 kinds of ice cream
* Almost had to spend the night at the Mukilteo lighthouse
* Went to West Seattle
* Finished [profile] jade_okelani's photo competition
* Got pictures of many out-of-state license plates that I didn't already have (we want to photograph all 50 states, but realize we'll probably never get Hawaii)
* Woke up a lot in the middle of the night when Talis would bark his head off hearing noises (aka Robbie getting up to use the bathroom)
* Made 2 homecooked meals
* Finished a 1,000-piece puzzle (with the help of [profile] romanticalgirl, who came over for dinner and was conscripted into puzzle slavery)
* Finished S1-3 of How I Met Your Mother (well okay, I did)
* Bought lots of books (me mostly of the cookbook variety plus Ursula le Guin's Earthsea quartet and George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series)
* Got bitten on the neck several places by bugs (well okay, I did)
* Had dinner with more lovely people - [profile] corianderstem, [profile] leiliaxf, [personal profile] breyer and the latter's brother and bro's friend
* Went to the Washington State Arboretum
* Saw Wicked

Long post, text and picture intensive. )

And that is all for the pictorial of the last week or so. I was all sad about sending Robbie to the airport, but then we received a gift from on high: A HAWAII LICENSE PLATE!!! (I started writing the list above before sending her to the airport.) Robbie has been saying forever that she doesn't even know why we're bothering with the license plate game, because we'll never find anyone who's shipped their car from Hawaii to the mainland. And yet someone did, and they passed by us on the freeway. She'd just dug out my chapstick from the armrest compartment for me, and we both saw the plate at the same time. We both let out huge *GASPS* and then she was fumbling for her camera. So even though Robbie leaving was a sad thing, it was tempered by the most excellent license plate find. (In fact, right before that we got a North Dakota one, which we were pretty stoked about, but it was nothing compared to our joy over Hawaii. Yeah, yeah, we are total dorks.)
