I went out to lunch today and started reading Ender's Game.

Wow.

Why has no one ever rec'ed this book to me before? I'm only four chapters in, and I'm riveted. It might even pull me away from WoW. I'm not even a huge sci-fi fan. He almost had me in tears in chapter two. Is there anyone as w00bie as Ender? I don't know if he's actually going to grow up through the course of this book, but part of me hopes not. He's so the new Harry Potter. Only, he came before Harry. And I don't think I ever adored Harry the way I'm already starting to adore Ender. (HP has always been more about the amazing world JKR created, for me.)

Is it wrong that I'm getting Ender/Valentine vibes?

Dude, you never read Ender's Game? Where've you been, under a rock?

Honestly? I don't think I've ever even heard of it, except in the most oblique way. No one's ever directly recommended it to me, nor have I ever heard anyone talk about the book (in any way that would have made me want to read it or remember it, at least). I blame my entire circle of friends for my deprivation till now.

I didn't care much for Speaker for the Dead, and so I haven't sought out the others yet, but... It's unfathomable that you'd never heard of it. I thought for sure everyone on earth had it recommended to them as a teenager.

Also, yes, it's very wrong, but you're not the only one.

Lalala, I don't want to hear about any of the others yet, as I am still in thrall to the original book. :D If it continues as it has, I'll so be reading all of them no matter what, but I think I did see on Amazon that people generally love the first and are iffy about the others.

Nope, maybe because, like I said, I'm not a sci fi kind of gal. I think I could count on one hand the number of sci-fi books I've read, and on two hands, sci-fi/fantasy. It hasn't been until fairly recently that I've delved into other genres that I didn't much enjoy in the past.

As a teenager I was too busy reading VC Andrews, Isabel Allende, Joseph Heller, John Grisham. You know, the classics. ;) It was never assigned in any of my classes (sci fi not so much appreciated in English lit), and no one else I knew read sci fi, either. Woe. Really, I've had very minimal exposure to the sci fi/fantasy genres -- it wasn't until I got online that I even met people who read books in those genres, and then, only in the last couple of years or so. O.o

I'm hoping it'll fade with time. It would help if OSC didn't write things like, "She is completely devoted to you, as you are to her." Honestly.

I'm more of an Ender/Bean, but... :)

Orson Scott Card is one of the few very famous living Scifi legends, though. Can't believe you avoided hearing of him for so long.

Hmm, my friend made me read that last month. I had issues with the very last chapter, but I just love how the rest plays out. Apparently they are making a movie...

I'm only four chapters in, I don't know who Bean is. But don't tell me, because I don't want to be spoiled! :)

Yeah, I just saw that somewhere, maybe Amazon. Damn, why does Hollywood have to get its mitts into everything? I hope they get a good cast and that the adaptation's decent. Don't say any more about the book's specifics, I don't want to be spoiled! Hee. :D

Well, I sha'n't ruin it for you then, and just say that he is the person whom Ender should totally boink. :)

Are you sure? I'd be more than happy to tell you about the part where... Just jokes. Hope you have fun reading it. :p

*fangirls EG and OSC like crazy*

Well, if you'd looked at my interests in my userinfo, that was sort of like a rec... and I think I recced it when I did my stupid A-Z meme...

Okay, regardless... I'm glad you're reading it. It's addictive as hell, and the whole series is amazing. You'll have to keep posting here as you read, because I'd love to know what you think of it.

So it's worth reading, huh? I have, of course, heard of OSC and Ender's Game, but have never really been interested in reading it...

Ender's Game is a masterpiece. I never recommended it? My fault! I consider it required reading - it is an excellent sci-fi novel with very strong characterization. I'd say more about what makes it unique, but I don't wanna spoil the ending ;)

Definitively try the sequels. They are not as good, but the first two are strong stories. The last one is very, er, strange - some people love it, some hate it.

Oh, and word on the Ender/Valentine vibes - but hey, can it be worse than all those R/G fics? :p

Last time I checked, the licensing options for the movie had expired and the movie rights had reverted back to OSC, who wrote a new script - currently he is trying to sell it to a movie studio.

If he hasn't sold it yet, though, it might take a while until he does.... for what I've heard, OSC is not exactly the nicest people to work with - and lately, with all the marriage-protection brouhaha you americans have stirren up, he is not exactly the kind of guy a Hollywood movie studio might want to associate with...

Ender's Game is my all time favourite book ever, and, if you can get hold of it, there are a few books that follow the other kids through their story, Bean's is definitely my favourite.

It's a brilliant book, and you should buy the sequel from me, for I've no idea what else to do with it, and I can't just read it again.... or, I can, but I'd rather keep moving onto new things. The sequels excellent, also, but I find myself preferring Ender's Game. *sighs*
Oh, and also... big fan of yours. Rawr.

Hmm, now I don't know what's going on. I was at OSC's Web site yesterday and it sounded like the movie was on (but I think that was from March), and that the guy who wrote "Troy" was taking a whack at the screenplay. But such a good point re: Hollywood and OSC...

Yeah, as I told Myn, I had only heard of the book very peripherally, never in a way that made me want to read it. I'm not sure what your tastes are, if you're into science fiction at all. It's only recently that I've begun to develop any kind of appreciation for it (same for fantasy), but I'd say that this one is a fairly 'easy' sci-fi book to digest, if you were at all inclined. And if this one doesn't do it for you, sci fi may simply not be your cup of tea. We'll have to see how it goes as I progress w/ the book to see if my interest stays.

You are forgiven. ;) V. good information to have about the others. I sense that if I like the book, I'll definitely want to at least check out the sequel, even though people seem torn about that one. E/V in a way is creepier, because it's canon. I don't really see R/G in canon at all.

I already have the sequel, but thanks! It does seem most people prefer the original to any of the subsequent follow ups, so you're not alone. : )
