I went out to lunch today and started reading Ender's Game.

Wow.

Why has no one ever rec'ed this book to me before? I'm only four chapters in, and I'm riveted. It might even pull me away from WoW. I'm not even a huge sci-fi fan. He almost had me in tears in chapter two. Is there anyone as w00bie as Ender? I don't know if he's actually going to grow up through the course of this book, but part of me hopes not. He's so the new Harry Potter. Only, he came before Harry. And I don't think I ever adored Harry the way I'm already starting to adore Ender. (HP has always been more about the amazing world JKR created, for me.)

Is it wrong that I'm getting Ender/Valentine vibes?

Honestly? I don't think I've ever even heard of it, except in the most oblique way. No one's ever directly recommended it to me, nor have I ever heard anyone talk about the book (in any way that would have made me want to read it or remember it, at least). I blame my entire circle of friends for my deprivation till now.

I didn't care much for Speaker for the Dead, and so I haven't sought out the others yet, but... It's unfathomable that you'd never heard of it. I thought for sure everyone on earth had it recommended to them as a teenager.

Lalala, I don't want to hear about any of the others yet, as I am still in thrall to the original book. :D If it continues as it has, I'll so be reading all of them no matter what, but I think I did see on Amazon that people generally love the first and are iffy about the others.

Nope, maybe because, like I said, I'm not a sci fi kind of gal. I think I could count on one hand the number of sci-fi books I've read, and on two hands, sci-fi/fantasy. It hasn't been until fairly recently that I've delved into other genres that I didn't much enjoy in the past.

As a teenager I was too busy reading VC Andrews, Isabel Allende, Joseph Heller, John Grisham. You know, the classics. ;) It was never assigned in any of my classes (sci fi not so much appreciated in English lit), and no one else I knew read sci fi, either. Woe. Really, I've had very minimal exposure to the sci fi/fantasy genres -- it wasn't until I got online that I even met people who read books in those genres, and then, only in the last couple of years or so. O.o
