♠ I should be working on my original novel right now, but I am procrastinating instead (obviously). In awesome but somewhat flabbergasting news, I have reached 109,416 words. The bad news is that I don't know how far along I am in the story. Maybe two-thirds of the way through? The even more bad news is that it is missing a lot of components that I'm going to have to add in once the initial draft is done -- such as tension. I don't feel like there's a lot of tension in the story right now. Like, what in the world is keeping the two protagonists apart other than stupidity and lack of communication? :/ (It's a YA romance.) So. A lot of work to do in the future. But still, 109k words, the most I have written of anything original, ever. So yay.

♠ NFL draft: The Seahawks did their usual baffling style of drafting. I love it though, because the pundits are now leery of criticizing them, for fear of looking like idiots. So whenever the Hawks drafted a player that no one was expecting, the analysts/commentators just kind of paused, talked a bit about the player's stats, made some vague allusion to how it might fit in with our scheme, then changed the subject. LOLOL.

Part of this is because, two years ago, the Seahawks 2012 draft class was universally panned. Draft analysts gave it grades between a D+ and an F (Bleacher Report). That class included players like Russell Wilson, Bobby Wagner, JR Sweezy, Jermaine Kearse, Bruce Irvin, Robert Turbin, Derrick Coleman... all players who make regular contributions to the squad and had playing time in the Super Bowl. So yeah. Pundits just sort of sidestep John Schneider's head-scratching choices. :)))

Russell tweeted this after the SB smackdown: )

♠ I read The Maze Runner and its sequel, The Scorch Trials, and skimmed the third book The Death Cure. The first couple of books were entertaining reads, even if there was some awkwardness with the writing and I had my doubts about where it was all leading -- it was way convoluted -- but I enjoyed them. However, about three-fourths of the way through the second book, I started to get suspicious about something. I therefore did something very bad and skipped to the end of the third book to see if my suspicions would be confirmed -- AND THEY WERE. I was really, really upset about it. :/ That's why I ended up skimming the third book instead of reading it... the protagonist, who always had his moments of being irritating, suddenly became totally intolerable to me. I didn't agree with his choices, I thought he was hypocritical and inconsistent -- being overly hard on one character while too lenient on another, and there was just too much "action," like it was Michael Bay movie put into words.

This is one instance in which I hope the movie series DOES change the book, and "fix" the problems I had with it. :P I'm pretty stoked that Dylan O'Brien is playing Thomas, which is how I got turned to the series in the first place.

♠ Speaking of having problems with book-to-screen adaptations, I have decided to stop watching Game of Thrones. I no longer find it enjoyable, and in fact, it enrages me on a regular basis.

You guys... I am so happy to report that Community is BACK. And I don't just mean that the new season is airing, though that is true. I mean that it is back to being as brilliant as it used to be (let's face it, Dan Harmon has his issues, but ultimately he's a mad genius). [profile] jade_okelani and I laughed more often and more genuinely in the first episode of S5 than we did all of last season. It is a joy to watch again (and has the added benefit of no Chevy Chase). The laughs come from an unexpected and witty place. IT IS THE BEST EXAMPLE OF WHAT TELEVISION OUGHT TO BE. Episode 3 of the new season is particularly wonderful. What they can fit into 20 minutes, ahhh! Brilliance, just sheer brilliance. Now that I have completely overhyped it for you, go forth and enjoy!

Next up, I completely blame [personal profile] adelagia for my new obsession with One Direction. It is utterly her fault. She keeps sending me stuff and making me get more and more obsessed. They really did nothing for me before (other than that they had a couple of fun, catchy songs), but good lord, have you guys noticed that those boys have grown up? Like, they have seriously. grown. up. Fucking Harry Styles, ohmygod. His dumb face, I hate it. And his stupid voice!!!!! The chorus of Through the Dark is him and Zayn, and it's basically eargasmic. It's not RIGHT. And of course there's the way he carries the chorus (BOTH TIMES, T.) in Story of My Life, which also happens to be a truly awesome music vid. Watch it, damn you:

Meanwhile, I have had yet another original story idea that will have to wait because if I let myself get distracted I'll never finish anything. I'm at nearly 50k words on the story I've been working on, which is the most I've ever written of anything original, ever. And I already know I'm going to have to make a ton of changes later, but as long as things are generally progressing in a way I want, I haven't been worrying about it too much.

I've stayed home the last couple of days because I hate it when people go into work sick and spread their germs around. This morning I had to go to a meeting (my boss set it up weeks ago, and was adamant that we all had to be there IN PERSON), but drank a ton of water to keep the coughing at a minimum. My symptoms aren't too bad, all things considered, but I sound pretty terrible. Or as my coworker J. told me: "I hope you feel better. You sound like Kathleen Turner. Old, decrepit Kathleen Turner, not the young, hot one." -.-

While convalescing at home, I rewatched Arrow season 1. Oh, life is so hard! But I discovered something while watching it. I still love Stephen Amell/Oliver Queen, but all the stuff about Laurel, which was just barely tolerable the first time around, is now almost totally intolerable because the first nine episodes of season 2 have spoiled me so much. OLICITY 4EVAH!!! I don't even mind Laurel so much; I just can't stand Laurel/Oliver. The show opened with him having CHEATED ON HER WITH HER SISTER. THE SHIP IS DEAD.

OK. I'm calm again.

In original writing news, I am working on two different stories right now. Story #1 is the young adult romance I've been working on for weeks, and have over 40k written. It stalled a week or so ago because I was writing this one scene and it just wasn't working, but I didn't know where I wanted to go with it or how to get it there, so it just. kept. happening, and I was really unhappy and discouraged. That's when I started working on story #2, which is based on some personal experiences (and which [personal profile] adelagia inspired me to start on), and has turned into a potential series with [profile] jade_okelani. You know. In theory. Anyway, I finally had a eureka moment this morning wrt story #1 and what to do with the scene I've been working on. It's going to mean scrapping almost all of it, which I really find hard to do in general, but in this case, if it'll get it moving again, I gladly pay the price.

Meanwhile, I can't wait for my new PC to arrive, which won't be for ages yet. :/ I miss doing everything that I normally would do on my desktop, plus writing on a tablet is for the birds, I tell ya.
