My diet is going... not badly, but not well, either. I can't seem to make myself make good choices. I can't believe how many calories everything has, and how few calories I am allowed to eat if I want to make my goal weight. WTF? I know partly that's because I don't do any exercise, which would help offset some of the calories I love to consume, but words cannot express how much I hate working out. So I'm screwed, basically.

In the last 3 weeks or so, Pinterest has suddenly rocketed into my radar. It's cropping up everywhere, including work discussions around social media. Seriously I cannot keep up with everything. I've only barely just started using StumbleUpon! Anyway, does anyone who's already on Pinterest have an invite they'd kindly like to share with me? (Thanks, [personal profile] ropo!)

In the last few days I watched all of Dexter S6. Dexter is one of those shows that is not must watch for me, but when I do watch it I usually have a good time. Spoilers! )

I made a delicious pasta the other night. It's like, my mom and mine's absolute favorite. Anyway, while I was using my mandoline to slice mushrooms I got over zealous and totally sliced into my thumb. It was fairly deep and bled a lot (ewwwwww). I've never actually cut myself on the mandoline before, because I am usually super anally careful, as mandolines are notorious for cutting people. Sigh, first time for everything. Anyway, I want to share the recipe for the pasta, even though there are no photos because it was devoured too quickly. It's actually a recipe that I adapted from D., K.'s husband. D.'s Pasta. )

I've worked from home the last two days because my cold symptoms were so bad (though I feel okay otherwise) and people at work were making the sign of the cross at me and such. Also because yesterday we knew there was a snowstorm coming, though that didn't happen until much later than predicted.

Talis is such a little freak because he likes the snow. He hates the rain and I have to practically drag him out when it's raining, but for him snow is cool and he'll stay out forever if I let him. He doesn't even seem to feel the cold. I know he has his own fur coat and all, but what about the paws?! Whenever he goes in the snow I always have to wash all of his feet in order to get out the caked-in snow. Sigh.

Speaking of freakish pets, today is day I-don't-even-know of wearing my glasses, which I hate. While I was in CA, Jaime ate one of my contacts. Yeah. He is still obsessed with food. He stole various scraps out of the trash while at my parents'; a couple of times, my mom woke up, went downstairs, and found trash strewn all over the place due to Jaime's noctural foraging; and once, he even tore into a bag of sugar cookies and ate a couple. Seriously, do all cats do this?! I'm trying an experiment with his dry food. I'm trying to free feed him again, but am leaving out a giant bowl of food instead of just a cup or two. It seems to have made him less anxious, but the bad thing is that I can't really tell exactly how much he's eating per day. Certainly a lot more than I was giving him (as recommended by the vet and the cat food bag), but maybe it's not a terrible thing. He's not overweight...yet.

The last two days while staying home I mainlined Dexter S5. I'd forgotten Desmond Harrington was in it. He's one of my crushes from way back when, and due to only one movie. I thought he would disappear into obscurity after that, but here he is again. Anyway, I saw him in The Messenger with Milla Jovovich and was instantly like, I LOVE THIS GUY (like Christian Bale in Newsies). And I still think he's a right hottie. Spoilers for Dexter S5. )

I'm also watching Inbetweeners. It's basically British American Pie. Or maybe the male version of Georgia Nicolson. It's funny but kind of raunchy ... not as well done as Misfits, but then few things are. One of the guys reminds me of Peter from the Narnia movies. Anyway, the show requires even less of a commitment than Misfits -- 6 episodes in a season, and each episode is like 22 minutes long.

Finally, I've caught up with The Sopranos through S4. The scenes between Tony and Carmela in the finale were SO good. While I enjoy the show very much, I still don't get why it's considered the best TV show that's ever aired by so many people.

Okay... I had a traumatizing experience yesterday. Despite the fact that mosquitoes love me and I almost always have several bites on various parts of my body, I've never taken especial precautions to prevent them. I just figured it was a fact of life. But now I need to make it a point to cover myself up from head to go when I go out in the garden. I need to buy some sun clothes and wear them. For the first time ever, I SAW a mosquito feasting on me. I've never seen that before. They usually bite me and I don't notice until the swelling starts. It totally freaked me out to see it sitting there, EATING ME. And yes, now there is a hot lump on my arm where it had treated me like a juice box. THAT IS SO GROSS.

===

Have you ever had deep fried pickles? They are so yummy. I had them for the first time a couple months ago -- I was super skeptical, but after the first bite I was completely sold. I failed at making them in my Actifry, but I love them enough that maybe I'll try making them the old-fashioned way. Or just make excuses to go to the People's Pub in Ballard for an excellent plate of them.

Also, I made this cocoa-nana bread the other night. Chocolate and banana, mmm.

TV Show Meme, Day 18 - Favorite title sequence: Dexter

DESPITE the first few frames showing a mosquito feeding on Dexter, the rest of it features a lot of food. Delicious-looking food (even though it's supposed to make you think of death and murder). So I'm a big fan. I don't get sick of watching this title sequence. :))

First day physically back in the office. Found a package of chocolate mocha covered English toffee on my desk along with a gift card to Wild Ginger, one of my favorite restaurants, from my managers. Along with a gift card to Schwartz Brothers restaurants that my manager gave me last month and one to the Cheesecake Factory that one of my aunts gave me, I'll be eating pretty! I'm least excited about the Schwartz Brothers one, because none of their 3 restaurants have gotten great reviews on Yelp. If you're in the know, would you recommend Daniel's Broiler, Chandler's Crabhouse, or Spazzo? I've been to Spazzo but it's not very interesting.

Later in the month [profile] corianderstem and I are going to see Avatar on IMAX 3D! I hope I don't throw up, lol. Afterward, we're going to go to Serious Pie for dinner. It's Tom Douglas's pizza place and I've been very curious about it!

I'm in rather desperate need of a haircut. I think I'm going to skip my regular stylist and try out this place in Kent that offers a wash, cut, and hot oil treatment for $17. If it turns out well it'll be worth the occasional drive.

Used a Barnes & Noble gift card to buy:

* Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay (on which the show is based)
* Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson
* The Enchantress of Florence by Salman Rushdie

(It was buy 2, get the 3rd free.)

* How to Cook Everything by Mark Bittman (I really enjoy his Minimalist column at the NY Times. Wouldn't go to him for more complex dishes, but he's the perfect source for common, less involved recipes that still taste great.)

Last night I was craving a Caesar salad, so I followed the recipe in HtCE and it was YUM. It was a lot tangier and lighter than typical Caesar salad dressings served in restaurants and I enjoyed it verrrry much. Think it was probably healthier too. Well, you know, other than the whole raw egg/possible salmonella contamination thing. Here's the recipe. )

I'm all caught up on this season's House (thanks, Hulu!). I like how he's declared his love for Cuddy while being openly gay with Wilson. Oh how I love this show.

Am still raiding casually (by which I mean, I don't care if I raid or not, took like a month off, and am not getting worked up about things such as loot, wiping, etc.). Last night I replaced my really crappy lvl 200 boots with my first lvl 264 piece -- and it was only my second night back from vacation. This is really the way to play WoW.

Hello!

Sadly, my vacation has come to an end.

I'm happy to be back amongst all my things, of course, but I will miss the mild weather (it was 75°F when I left) and general sunniness (it's cloudy here and my house is extra dark). Vitamin D, my new best pal. As always after a long absence I'm kind of at a loss where to start... so I'll just blab away with no real plan.

I'm eating delicious fudge from Fynt (really, his mom) to fortify myself.

1) Some time after my last post, I was rear ended. Again. I know, I can't even use exclamations or act surprised at all by this point. It was still 2009. I knew it wasn't going to let me go easily. Basically, I needed to make a turn out of a parking lot but had to cross several lanes, so I was having to wait for a lot of traffic. The asshole behind me decided that in revenge for making him wait 30 seconds, he was going to deliberately hit my car (he was in some crappy old car that had seen better days) and zoom away. Because my mom gets hysterical about these sorts of things, I did not chase after him, and because it took me a few seconds to even realize what had happened, I didn't get his plate. Now my parents' new car has a badly scuffed bumper. (And remember, it's only new because my mom was in that serious car accident that totaled their old car a few months ago, for which she is still getting physical therapy.)

2) Right before I left, one of my aunts was hospitalized due to needing gall bladder surgery. She's back home and is recovering OK. I know, 2010 isn't shaping up to being any better than 2009 so far.

3) My flight home was good. The flight was at 3:30, they were going to board at 3, and I got there at 2:40. I noticed that my battery was critically low, which was a problem because after I landed I needed to a) get in touch with K., who was picking me up, and b) get in touch with S., who I was picking up after K. and I had dinner. I found one of those charging stations (BLESS those things), and decided to charge my phone until 3:15. I figured that that would give them 15 minutes to start boarding, and besides I'd just read in the paper about how airlines were failing at on-time flights since the recent flight scares. At 3:14 I unplugged my phone and went to use the restroom. When I came out, I heard my name being called over the loudspeaker and that it was my FINAL CALL. I was like WTF and went over to the gate. Their digital clock read 3:16. They had somehow boarded everyone else in 16 minutes!! I was the last person on the plane. We left early, we got some good wind, and then some expected turbulence didn't happen, all of which got me back home half an hour early. Which is always nice.

4) In case you enjoy them as much as S. does: Williams-Sonoma peppermint bark is on sale right now. $10 for a tin that usually costs (a ridiculous, imho) $26.50. It's really good peppermint bark. I'm going to bake some into brownies. :D I think it's out of most stores, so you probably can't get that price w/o ordering them online and paying for shipping. Surprisingly, W-S didn't charge tax, even though they do have brick-and-mortar stores here. I just don't get how the tax thing works.

5) My physical therapist thinks I should continue treatment for another 4 weeks or so. That's fine w/ me as long as the other insurance company pays for it, which they should, hopefully without incident. Sigh. I'd also like to start massage therapy, because while I was in CA I got like 3 of them and it seemed to help a lot.

6) While on vacation I saw Sherlock Holmes and Avatar. While neither make my best or favorite movies lists, they were fun. I'm considering seeing Avatar again at the Pacific Science Center's IMAX theater because I can get tickets for $3.50. Any Seattlites interested in joining me? First to express interest gets it, because I can only get 2 tix per show.

7) If you've never had caramel-flavored Bugles, they are sooooo good. Basically they're like caramel popcorn, salty and sweet and delicious.

8) Watched Dexter seasons 2, 3, AND 4. Wow @ 4's ending. Just wow. So well done. I thought the show was good after season 1, but now it's definitely up there with the exceptional ones.

9) Given all the things I bought and received over break, it didn't all fit into the suitcase I brought. I had to use my mom's larger suitcase to take home (and paid the extra fee, grr).

10) Discovered after years of avoiding wearing earrings (because my ears would get all itchy and aggravated) that I can only wear gold earrings. I always thought that my ears got all inflamed and angry because I wasn't used to wearing earrings, period... but then discovered that they don't get that way with gold. So there's something in regular earrings and even sterling silver that affects me negatively. Sigh @ that, but yay that I can comfortably wear earrings again.

11) Read Audrey Niffenegger's Her Fearful Symmetry. It was beautifully written, and was interesting (definitely kept me turning the page), but was ultimately disappointing. Not because it wasn't The Time-Traveler's Wife (as Jade says, "She already wrote that book, see."), but because the plot and other elements of HFS was just kind of ... not well thought out. It's a much, much simpler book in terms of ambition. Maybe after TTTW she just needed something very different in both plot and execution. Just wish it was a cleaner book than it is ... and not, you know, in terms of sex/language.

12) I may be going to Esalen in April.
