At long last, I'm getting A Homemade Life from Paperbackswap. I've been #1 in the queue for ages!
I'm maybe a fourth of the way through The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I'm intrigued (finally), though I don't like any of the characters so far. And the writing is kind of pedantic and plodding (though maybe it's a translation issue).
grrm is so TAUNTY with his casting news posts for HBO's A Game of Thrones. I want to watch that show so badly! Though I want to read A Dance with Dragons even more badly.

I was really resistant to this show. Partly it was that I didn't think any sitcom could again capture my attention the way Friends did. Partly it was that I wasn't into the premise... at all. I mean, why watch a show where there's basically a central "mystery figure" who you KNOW won't be revealed until the end of the series, whenever that is? And therefore, pretty much KNOW that whoever the primary male lead gets involved with isn't The One, and therefore the relationship is doomed? Sounds really annoying, an exercise in frustration. No thanks.
But. It's so much better than its premise. The premise isn't nearly as annoying as I was expecting, primarily because it's not what makes the show great (in fact, it's still its weakest point). What makes the show great are the central characters, the relationships between the central characters, and how truly funny it is. It doesn't just rely on Neil Patrick Harris's over-the-top Barney, and Alison Hannigan isn't totally distracting as Willow. But possibly the best/most endearing one of the bunch is Jason Segel. I actually started caring about every one of them, which, at least for me, is fairly unusual. (And just so it's out there, I'm a Robin/Barney shipper.)
