I hate Facebook. I don't know how it got to be as ubiquitous as it is, with everyone using it, but it has a long, long, LONG way to go in terms of reliability. I constantly have problems with weird connections, randomly ordered posts, errors on pages, etc. I don't even know why I play stupid games like Farmville, but I do. Damn my eyes!

I thought it was going to be all difficult this year to watch all the best picture nominees, as I try to do every year, because they expanded the field to 10, but I just checked the list and it turns out, I've seen 9/10 of them. O.o Only one I'm missing is The Hurt Locker, but I'm very interested in that one and will see it before the Oscars for sure.

2010 Best Pic Noms

The Hurt Locker - Only one I haven't seen yet!

Avatar - Can't imagine that this won't win, especially in this field. Thought the story was good and the effects were great, but isn't really a movie that cracks any of my top 10 lists.

The Blind Side - Only wanted to see this because it was based on a true story, and because Sandra Bullock has been getting major accolades. Thought she was great, but it didn't really scream Academy Award performance to me. *shrug* And I enjoyed the film, but during certain moments I felt cheap for feeling touched.

Up in the Air - Mentioned this before, but I thought this was OK. Nothing mind blowing, and moved too slowly in parts. Again thought GC was good, but nothing about his performance made me want to shove a statuette in his hands. Really liked the two actresses, but they're going to cancel each other out when it comes to the actual award.

An Education - Carey Mulligan was good, but otherwise thought this was a tired take on a subject done before. Didn't feel particularly fresh, and by the end I was just depressed. Really loved Emma Thompson and Olivia Williams, but they had like 15 lines between the two of them. Okay, OW had a bigger part than that, but ET, who was fab, had a super small role.

District 9 - Really, THIS got a best pic nom and Invictus didn't? Not that Invictus was so great or District 9 was so bad, but it's surprising, is all. Liked the story and thought it was a lot fresher than some tired ideas out there, but ultimately wasn't something I'd want to watch over and over. Plus the camera movement apparently was more than my stomach could handle.

Inglourious Basterds - Thought it was a good story and well directed, but I'm not a fan of rewriting history. Biggest impression it gave me was the streudel and whipped cream, mmm. Actually I also quite enjoyed Diane Kruger, but she got like, no accolades for her role. Well, that I've seen, anyway.

A Serious Man - KILL ME NOW. A more pointless movie has never been made. Oh wait, yes, there has been one, and it won best picture last year. Seriously, these are the kinds of movies that make me really angry for getting critical raves. It was so POINTLESS. And STUPID. At least it was vaguely more interesting than No Country for Old Men, though it all leads up to a whole lot of nothing. And I despise their penchant for these abrupt, nonsensical endings. I guess that's their way of being artistic. Stop being artistic and make a good goddamn movie. I loved Fargo and O Brother, Where Art Thou?, but since then the Coen brothers have made crap. Yes, that is how I feel about it. Soon they will be in the same company as P.T. Anderson, WHO IS DEAD TO ME.

Up - Uplifting, funny, etc., it's all been said before. Still not my favorite animated movie, or even Pixar movie, but it certainly deserves an Oscar before many of the other nominees on this list.

Precious - When I read this book in college it blew my mind a little. When I'd heard it been made into a movie, I was skeptical. How in the world do you make a movie with that kind of subject matter? They did a great job though. The stand-out star in this one was definitely Monique. Wow. If she doesn't win an Oscar she wuz totally robbed.

I'm also vaguely interested in seeing Crazy Heart, since Jeff Bridges is the favorite to win best actor for that role.

I've rewatched the first 13 eps of Glee. I just love that show.

Knock on wood, but it's been the mildest winter for Seattle on record -- well, you know, my unofficial record. I don't know if it actually is. But since I moved here 10 years ago, I'm pretty sure it is. I mean, 50°F in February? Crazy! I think other parts of the country have taken all our bad winter weather this year. I've barely had to turn on my heater, when usually during the winter it's on constantly.

I actually did my taxes early this year. Usually I put it off and put it off until April rolls around, and then I do it all last minute, hunting feverishly for various tax documents I've tossed in random places, usually still unopened. One year I put it off so much I had to file for an extension. Not this year, though! I'm so on top of things! I don't know if it's time for me to get someone to do my taxes or not. I always wonder if I'm stupidly paying way more than I should, just to save a bit of money on tax preparation. This year I am peeved, because I'm getting about the same amount back on my return as I did last year, but paid $2,000 more in taxes. Grrrr. I don't think I did anything wrong, but who the hell knows.

Anyway, I am thinking of using part of my refund to buy a little notebook/netbook, so I can write and do little online things in bed. I'm trying not to be dazzled by all the powerful laptops out there at reasonable prices, because I do not want something heavy (if I did, I wouldn't need to buy one, I have a existing laptop that would serve). Key features are weight, price, then all the other specs. So far, I've narrowed it down to two possibilities: this laptop, or this netbook. I guess the biggest question is whether I want to pay the price difference for the additional features the laptop has.

Wish me luck! I bought 5 pounds of veal bones and am in the process of making a real demi glace (using this method). It takes like 2 days from start to finish, but hopefully the result will be well worth it.
