lost doggie + visits
Apr. 21st, 2009 02:46 pmTalis and I had ourselves an adventure the other day. I have this thing, where I like to save lost dogs. One of my family dogs as a child wandered away from home and got hit by a car, and since then I've tried to be the person that I wish had been around when he'd wandered off, the person who takes the time to try and save it from wandering into traffic, and calling the owners if names/numbers are listed on the dog's collar. (So please do make sure your dog has a collar and ID!)
I was taking Talis out on his morning walk, except this time I had my iPod with me. Usually I don't bother, because we just walk down the street and back, and plus I usually just keep it in my car. Anyway, I took it with me, and so my hands/pockets were full of that, my dog on a leash, my keys, and a plastic baggie. We get to the end of the street and Talis starts pulling on his leash. I don't see the other dog at first, because it's a tiny thing -- a Schnauzer, maybe? Someone with more knowledge of dog breeds will need to correct me -- but they approach each other and start sniffing away. Because it's so much smaller than Talis he's not afraid of it like he is some of the other neighborhood dogs (who bound up to him wanting to play, but he feels threatened).
I've approached dogs who are mistrustful, and won't come to me when I squat down and call for them, but this one toddled right up to me. He had a bandana on, so I knew he wasn't just some stray. I found his collar and saw that his name was Cesar and there was a phone number but no address, so I put everything I could into my pockets (cursing myself for bringing my iPod today of all days) and picked him up in my arms (well, arm, he was tiny), while keeping hold of Talis on his leash. Then we began the trek back, which isn't that long, except when you've got a bunch of things you're holding, and a dog who thinks that it's still his normal daily walk and so wants to stop at every bush and flower he meets. Also it was warmish that day, for the Pacific NW, but I was wearing my usual warm clothing because I don't like being cold, so by the time we were halfway back I was HOT.
Talis usually doesn't like other people/dogs near me, but Cesar was so nonthreatening that other than stopping to look at him quizzically in my arms a few times, Talis didn't bark or otherwise go crazy. (Maybe he didn't think he was a real dog at all, like how Mal feels about Talis.) Finally we get home, and I put Cesar down, hoping he was house trained enough not to start peeing on stuff. I took a few pictures:

Now I must confess a sin ... I briefly considered keeping him. He was soooo cute, and he and Talis were getting along (I've often thought about getting another dog to keep him company, but the work and $$ involved with maintaining 2 dogs always keeps me from doing it), and it seemed like fate that we had happened upon him. But my conscience kicked in, and I knew there had to be someone out there who loved him and would be really sad about losing him (even if they did allow him to get lost), so I called the number.
Let me just say, it was a darn good thing I didn't give in to temptation and keep him, because it turned out that one of my neighbors just down the street was dogsitting for her daughter (who answered the number I called), and she SO would have recognized him when I took the dogs out for walks in the future! So Cesar had only wandered down two houses or so, he couldn't have gotten out for very long. But he had been approaching the busy main road, so I'm glad I caught him when I did. When I brought him over to the house, this EVEN TINIER DOG came out to greet him/us. She was the same breed as he was, as far as I could tell, but like half his size. I know, I could hardly believe it myself when he was so small to begin with! Her name was Sophie. Cesar and Sophie, so cute!!
All's well that ends well.
My mother and aunt are coming up at the end of May to help my cousin after she gives birth to her third baby (crazy for someone who said she'd never have kids). It seems like she's been pregnant forever. Anyway I'll have to come up with some good restaurants to take them to.
Also,
ropo is coming for a visit at the end of August for about 10 days, wheee!
corianderstem and
leiliaxf, will you guys be around? We can hang and do stuff and watch her take pictures of everything!

Date: 2009-04-22 12:26 am (UTC)Now that I know what the breed is, maybe I will look into getting one! But I fear coming home and finding it dead or maimed because Talis finally realized it was another dog, and that he was bigger than it.

Date: 2009-04-22 01:13 am (UTC)almost get hit by a car on my way home. After some coaxing she gave up her fear and followed me and then let me pick her up. She had no collar when we found her. I called the shelter and left her info and took her to the vet and had her checked for a chip. Six days later nobody had called and now Sadie is in a lovely home with a three year old boy for a buddy. Kudos to you!

Date: 2009-04-22 03:11 am (UTC)You continue your trend of expensive taste - those dogs can cost thousands of dollars if bought purebred from a reputable breeder.
It would've been just like Tinkie if you'd kept him - remember I told you that story Robbie told me? Bad karma, too, so good on your conscience.

Date: 2009-04-22 03:24 am (UTC)No really, I totally did think of the Tinkie story when I was like, "No, no, I can't do that." It would have been eerily similar, since he ended up being so nearby (even if just visiting) too, and they would have been like, "I swear to GOD that's Cesar."

Date: 2009-04-22 03:42 am (UTC)They've gone down in price! Must be the economy, even Yorkies are depreciating. You could pick one up for a cool $400! (Or, you know, go to your local pound and probably find 6 of them stupid people gave to small children their parents couldn't afford to pay for in this depressed economy and get one for the cost of shots & licenses.)
