I'm going to Santa Cruz next weekend and apparently we don't even have a venue yet or know what we're going to do, because of the unpredictable weather. Sigh. This is going to turn out to be the best or lamest time ever.

As predicted, it's going to cost about $1,000 to get the piano shipped up here. I guess I'm going to do it. But get this, they now also want to give me some of the other nice furniture they have, like their china cabinet and what not. And obviously if we're going to have multiple heavy items, it makes more sense to ship it all at once, so now I'm just waiting on them to finalize a) what exactly they're sending; b) who they're going to use to ship; and c) when they're going to do it. It's all so crazy.

I've decided to buy a lame. I probably should have gotten one earlier, but I had thought, why buy it when a sharp knife works? Well, this far into my baking 'career,' I've realized that slashing dough, while seemingly easy, is probably the hardest part of the entire process. Either my tools aren't sharp enough or my technique just isn't good enough yet -- either way, it's clear I have to hedge my bets in order to get pretty bread. There's no guarantee that the lame will be a miracle fix, but its express purpose is slashing dough, so it certainly can't hurt (at least worth the $7 investment). I wouldn't need it if I were only baking pan loaves, but it's way more fun to make free-form loaves, and with those good slashes are a must. It's slashing the dough pre-baking that makes bread look like bread, instead of a large, oversized peanut.

Daily News Roundup:

Californians just have to be sooooooo health conscious. You don't like second-hand smoke, your restaurants have cleanliness grades, you spawn all these diet fads, you want to be flame retardant ... god! So picky! Well, now look what you've done. I hope you're happy.

This is the first time I've ever heard of anyone even mentioning the possibility of an MMO dethroning WoW. The culprit? WAR, of course.

This site is hi-larious. Everyone's so gloom and doom lately. Let's not lose our sense of humor. My favorite topics: The Onion, Unpaid Internships, San Francisco, Threatening to Move to Canada, Toyota Prius, Barack Obama, and Apple Products. Things are only funny when they have a semblance of truth to it, and LiveJournal is populated with these truths. And if you can't look at yourself (including me, since I'm, well, a "banana"), laugh, and recognize some of that truth, you are taking yourself way too seriously.

Last but not least: Thank God it's Friday.

My personal favorite is #62: Knowing What's Best for Poor People. "It is a poorly guarded secret that, deep down, white people believe if given money and education that all poor people would be EXACTLY like them. In fact, the only reason that poor people make the choices they do is because they have not been given the means to make the right choices and care about the right things."

There are so many good gems in there! Much of it exaggerated, of course, but it's those bits of truth in them that makes it compelling (obviously, given how popular the site is).

I saw that "Stuff White People Like" book recently. I was all, "....whut?" And then I was all "ha ha ha." I didn't buy it. *g*

Yay for free furniture! Boo for shipping. I have a big box of nice china that was designated as being "mine" years and years ago. I think it was my great grandmother's. I have nowhere to put it and no use for it, but I kind of want to have them all the same, and will occasionally think about how to go about getting them here.

It usually ends with me thinking "ROAD TRIP!!!" *g*

I didn't even know it was a book until I got to the site, which was shared by someone on my gaming forum. It was so refreshing. I consider myself to be a true moderate, and it's sometimes really amusing/irritating to read all the LJ posts of people who pretty much fit the description of the people they describe on this site/book. Everyone's so righteous and narrow minded about the same things -- their way is the only way; the correct way. They completely lose perspective and have zero sense of humor about themselves. Of course, I'm used to it since that's exactly how I felt on Scullyfic, too. But you know, as awkward as it is sometimes, I'm glad to be part of that small segment of people who actually make the difference in elections. As a respected writer and professor once told me, hardcore Democrats always vote for Democrats, and hardcore Republicans always vote for Republicans, so how is it that elected officials are sometimes from one party and sometimes from another? Because of people like me! I am proud to be a moderate, which means being able to laugh at both sides and see the merits of both sides. That is pretty much unlike almost anyone who talks about politics on LJ. They all take themselves so seriously, they can't even look at something like this site/book and admit to any truths in them; they don't see (or want to acknowledge) the humor, the irony, the hypocrisy.

Oh man, china. I can't even imagine getting that shipped. You'd probably have to pack each piece all nice, and even then have to cross your fingers that they'd make the journey without anything bad happening to them. You could bring back 1 piece in your luggage every time you visit, ha! I totally know what you mean re: no place to put it. Not to mention, if you did find a place, and then you moved, you'd have to worry about moving it all over again. Such a pain. How long is the drive from here to Wisconsin? I did a straight 17-hour drive from here to LA once, and all I have to say after that is: Never again. By the end I was practically clawing the walls and never wanted to be inside a car again.

When I moved out here, it took my folks and I about .... 2 and a half days, I think? But if it were just me, I'd drive later into the night - they liked to stop earlier. I think it's about 2000 miles.

So if we set Californians on fire, they won't burn?
