Clarification on a VM spoiler.

I am posting this primarily for Jade, who hasn't yet seen VM but will soon, and for anyone else who might care about such things. Since Jade always somehow learns things, she will no doubt hear of a rumor that Kristin of eOnline spilled and possibly freak out (as I did). So to be a good friend, I am posting clarification on the rumor, which should set all minds at ease ... for those who think like me, anyway. </cryptic> However, if you don't know what rumor I'm talking about, don't click on the link, because then you'll just get spoiled for no reason. This is just a bit of peace of mind for the already-spoiled.
From Brooke: I just read that Logan might be the one killed off. If that's true, then there is no more Veronica Mars for me. Putting Logan and Veronica together was the reason I started to watch. They have great chemistry together. Why are they even thinking about killing him off? Please start a "Save Logan" campaign, anything to keep him on so I can keep watching this show.
Okay. I was going to save this for a future column, but since so many of you are freaking out about Veronica this week (and I don't blame you), I wanna clear this up now. First off, if you didn't see my initial column that broke this Veronica Mars story, it's here. I stand by everything I said in that column, with two clarifications I learned after writing it:
(1.) As I reported that very same week in the chat, Tara Reid will not be guest starring. She was a name that was initially thrown out there during pitch meetings, because UPN had asked for a twentysomething "name" to draw in the Top Model audience. However, Tara has signed on with E! to be the new host of our Wild On! series (genius casting, if you ask me).
From brandnewgirl: Clarification number two?!
(2.) The person who is getting written off--and, yes, I still stand by my report that a main character is getting written off!--will be exiting the show after 12 episodes, not six as I was previously told. I do not know at this point how they are writing him off, so it might not be a death, but regardless, I can tell you that the actor will be released from his contract by the end of January, and there are no plans for him to return to the show. That said, to avoid any outbursts of violence/looting/mass suicide around the globe, I should let you know that the person leaving--we'll call him our "Used-to-Be Friend" in honor of the show's theme song--is not Logan (Jason Dohring). In fact, Jason is actually going to be in more episodes next season (all 22). However U.T.B.F. is an integral character and one I'm personally very sad to see go.
** I think it's obvious who it is from these latest comments. I myself was v. concerned that it was Logan -- I mean, it would be a stupid move for them to make, but hey, better to be pleasantly surprised than crushingly disappointed -- but am so, so relieved that it's not him. It's Wallace. I'm 99.9% sure of it. I'm not really surprised -- he was the first character I thought of when I first heard this rumor -- but am disappointed. I love Wallace, and there aren't enough minorities represented on TV. Sadly, he's kind of like Pete on Smallville -- doesn't have a central role on a show whose mythology and complications are growing by leaps and bounds. He was supposed to be Veronica's best friend, yes, but mostly due to circumstance. Usually he was just one of her informants, and he could have had a recurring role like Mac's.
Wallace was probably intended to be Willow and Xander-esque, to be the friend to our outsider heroine, but no show has been able to do that the way BtVS did, really. On VM and on SV, it was clear that they were making no effort to include the character in the plotlines or writing -- hard to do in VM, considering Wallace was new and everyone else had known each other for years. Plus, Veronica is back in the 09er mainstream, as far as I'm concerned, which means she doesn't need a 'friend' to make her not such a loser. Wallace's primary role -- to show us that Veronica is a hero and champion of the meek and/or weak -- has already been established. They can't give him more 'depth,' because the whole point of him is to be the nice guy, the one she can trust absolutely. If he's not that, then they need to come up with a storyline for him -- which they are clearly unwilling to do.
Anyway, I'm talking about it like it's a sureity and it's not. Wallace may very well live. But given the clues we have -- that it's a "beloved character and actor," whose identity "will rip your heart into itty-bitty pieces," and the latest, that it's a guy, doesn't leave much room for doubt.
Kristin has assured fans that it's not Logan or Weevil. That leaves Keith, Duncan, and Wallace, basically. Of the three, Wallace is infinitely more expendable than the other two. So ... yeah.
Of course, Kristin is not always right, from what I understand. And maybe they're being Joss-like (not hard to believe, given his involvement w/ the show now) and throwing out fake spoilers so that we won't guess it's actually Veronica they're killing. But getting rid of Wallace just, unfortunately, makes too much sense.
Okay, VM PSA over, I am going to work on fic.
