Sometimes, you can boil life down to two very simple emotions:

I love:

* [livejournal.com profile] akscully. Why? Because waiting at my front door (which I did not check after returning from vacation) was this huge box. And inside the huge box was another huge box, bright red and tied with a pretty ribbon. Oh how I love boxes and ribbons! And inside this big red box with a ribbon was another box (okay, so she's not very environmentally minded; cut her some slack), and inside that box was a pretty lotus lantern!! And inside the lantern was another little box, which contained a candle! And there were two sets! Two pretty lanterns for my as-yet-unlandscaped yard! Well, now I'll have to landscape it. Thanks d00d, I love them! <33333

* That the buyer of my condo is as eager to close as I am, and escrow may close in the next two days!!

* Target, for having so many DVD boxsets on sale right now. I got Gilmore Girls and One Tree Hill, neither of which I've ever seen. OTH sounds like the guiltiest pleasure show ever.

* House. Why? Because I love a good, smart, well-written show that I don't have to pursue obsessively. I love that I can just watch one episode, stop it, and look forward to the next one. Most of the other shows I love are serialized, which means that I'm dying to know what happens next, and gorge myself on all the episodes in one weekend. With House, I can draw out the pleasure.

* Serenity. Why? Because it's a damn good movie, and comes from a damn good TV show. Firefly breaks the mold -- it's not really serialized, yet I still had to watch it obsessively. I had to know what cute little Mal/Inara moments lay in wait! Or what terrible, funny thing Jayne would say next. Anyway, back to the movie -- while there are little things I take issue with here and there (such as Mal's making River go on a job with them; I would argue that Mal from the series would be the first one to nix such a risk. But, of course, it wasn't until the 'last' episode that we find out she's a psychic, so he might have changed his tune), on the whole it was a wonderful revisit to a world I recently fell in love with. I can't decide, however, if I want them to make two more movies or revisit the TV show. At this point, I think I'll have to go with the movies. Joss has already blown his River wad; he should tell the rest of the story and then let the 'verse stand as it is. Hopefully without either Mal or Inara biting the dust.

I hate:

* Alliance, in particular those on Kilrogg. Why? Because they're morons.

Let's look at this scenario: At around 9pm last night, I logged on to play some WoW, hopefully get in some PVP action before today's maintenance. I see that Taurhorde (one of my favorite PVPers) is at Alterac, so I figure that's where the action is. I sign up for the bg, and after a bit of auctioning I'm told that I can get in. Cool deal.

When I arrive, the game I get into has already been going on for 4-5 hours. Even though it's my first AV experience, I can tell that Alliance has taken much of the ground, and raid chat pretty much confirms it -- we're probably going to lose. A lot of people (those who have been there for hours) start saying that we should just let them win, so that both sides can get honor points. From this, I glean that the game has to officially *end*, and thus both winners and losers get honor points for participating.

But people keep fighting, and eventually, I don't even know how, Horde starts to make a big push. We start to get Alliance to retreat, and pretty soon we are pwning them. We make it all the way to the top of the map. We've sacrificed much blood at the altar and our god gets called. He starts pwning Alliance left and right (they called upon their god early on, thus blowing their wad). With our god's assistance, we manage to take one of the last two of their graveyards before he goes down. At this point, all we have left is their garrison. We just have to defeat their general and their asses are grass.

Problem is, we only have 20 more minutes. Maintenance was starting two hours earlier than usual, so we were all about to get kicked off the server.

We had so pwned them. But does Alliance do the smart thing and back off so we can win, thus ending the game, and thus garnering every player honor points? NO. OF COURSE NOT. They continue to fight -- futilely, because if we can't win in 20 min., they certainly can't -- which means none of us are going to get any honor points. What freakin' idiots. So finally we get the server shutdown message, and the Horde players start to head back to Frostwolf, because we want to turn in all the crap and get as many rep points as we can before we're kicked off. So en masse, we depart the stupid Alliance garrison to go do this. Obviously if we'd had an hour or more, we could have won the game, and obviously we're not leaving because they've forced us to it. We had the upper hand; we left because banging our heads against a brick wall is stupid.

So most of us are back at Frostwolf, turning things in. Then someone wants to kill the lvl 61 dude who wanders that middle area (hey, like I said, it was my first time). A bunch of us agree, and we go to kill him as a last-minute hurrah. We're killing him, when out of the blue the Alliance shows up to once again try to engage us in PVP. They kill us as we're trying to kill this dude, and it's just THE LAMEST THING EVER. It's like, why are you such losers? Did you notice we left you alone when you were too stupid to understand that letting us win would gain us all honor points, and now none of us are getting any? Did you understand that we weren't retreating, that we don't want to play your sorry asses anymore, that we're now onto other things, since the server is going to shut down in literally 5 minutes? Rarely have I seen such a reckless display of dumbassness.

So meanwhile, the lameass Alliance starts "winning back" all the territory we'd taken from them (in quotations because since we'd totally abandoned the game by this point, what they were doing was hardly any sport), in an effort to -- I don't know. No one knew. Who knows what the hell they thought they could accomplish. We were just all like, wtf? What do they think is going to happen? Also, by this time a lot of the Horde players had dropped out, probably to get to an inn or whatever. There were 27 Horde. Those of us who stayed just wanted to see what would happen if the server shut down in the middle of an AV game -- who knows, maybe we'd get some honor points by default or something. The Alliance, however, seems to think that this is their chance to win (I told you they were sorry, pathetic losers right?), and there's still 35 of them there. They're PVP'ing like mad, even though most of us are so tired and bored that we're only half-heartedly fighting back. And hello, even if they get through us, they still have to defeat our general, the boss. Which they were not going to be able to do in two minutes. 8-|

Server shuts down. Game incomplete. Everyone likely with zero honor points for the game, since it wasn't finished. Seriously. How lame is that?????

All I can hope is that the Alliance on Silvermoon is cooler, because that's where my Alliance character is, and if we're as stupid as the Alliance on Kilrogg I will have to cry in shame.

* That my waste disposal people won't pick up my monitor for recycling, and I'll have to figure out what to do with it, myself. Grrrr. That thing is heavy.

* Having to actually write a story after I come up with the idea for it. Can't it just write itself?

* Getting a bill for something I shouldn't be getting a bill for, because then I have to sort it out.

* Setting off my house alarm accidentally and getting a call from the security people, who sound all exasperated because they have to deal with lame people like me all the time.

Hooray that they were still there! And I'm so glad you liked them. They struck me as very you. <3333333333

Have you seen the Serenity companion script thing? It's the full script and there's a ton more Mal/Inara stuff in it, along with a photo of Inara drawing back her bow with an arrow notched and holy cow, she's so Farah it's awesome. Also, I think I may ship River/Jayne. I know. I KNOW, OKAY?

They are very me.

I've just ordered that from Amazon, d00d! I got the soundtrack, the visual companion (a play on words? Will it blow me?), and the RP game (no clue how it works, it's just a book) for $21 after a promo thing and gift certificate. :D The bad news is, Amazon estimates delivery to be around Nov. 2. Are they high on crack?

See, this is why you, me, and Jade get along so well. We're like three brains melding into one. No wait, that means there's only one brain amongst the three of us. So make that, one huge brain broken up three times. Or something. Why do I say this? BECAUSE JADE TOTALLY SHIPS RIVER/JAYNE!!! After Serenity I can see it more, but I think I'm more of a Jayne/Kaylee gal. What? Mal/Inara uses up my whole canon-ship ration.

Nov. 2? WTF? That's, like, a month from now. Do they have to make the ink for the books or something?

Braaaaaaaains! *claps delightedly* Oh, happy day! Clearly we were all meant to be friends. Jade and I will squee over River/Jayne while you go your Jayne/Kaylee route and we will all appreciate Adam Baldwin. I think my totally non canon ship would have been Wash/Kaylee but well, you know. :( I could also get behind Kaylee/Inara (dirty!) but honestly, I lurve me some Simon/Kaylee. He has a very nice back.

I don't know, I'm thinking they have pack mules that they send out periodically.

I don't even know where you get River/Jayne that's not in Serenity. Well, okay, I always thought it was pretty interesting that despite his betrayal, River never has shown any kind of reservation about him. But that's because Jayne is just a big, dumb, lovable idiot. I've totally had the hankering recently to rewatch episodes of Angel that Adam was in. I can't remember if you watched that show or not.

Wash/Kaylee? :O You homewrecker!!! When I was half-watching the pilot I totally thought that Inara and Kaylee were going to be Willow and Tara. Seriously, I thought they were gay. :"> And then we realize Kaylee has a thing for Simon and I realized they weren't, but I SAW THE KAYLEE/INARA YES I DID. Especially when she's brushing her hair...

Yeah, Simon/Kaylee just doesn't do it for me, although I love that last scene in the movie. :)) I think it's that I don't find Simon attractive. Like, at all. It's not that what's his name is unattractive or anything; I just... yeah. Plus I find Kaylee just a teeny bit annoying sometimes. Even though I'm her. Take this quiz, bitch!

OMG, I couldn't have made this up if I tried. :))))))) And I get to use this icon, which, I mean, COME ON. It's perfect for you, Jade and I. Or rather, you and Jade and then me on the other side making :-l faces.

You scored as Inara Serra. The Courtesan. You have a job that brings comfort to people and eases their burdens. It took years of training and dedication to perfect. So why do people keep calling you a whore? You tried to get away from those people, but something keeps bringing you back.

Seriously. The Operative AND River AND Jayne? It's like, she'll either kill us in cold blood, because she has a psychotic episode, or simply because she feels like it. Hmm, come to think of it, it is pretty much like being friends with her.

If I get comfort from you maybe Mal will get jealous and finally say something, the dweeb.

Meanwhile, fear me:

You scored as The Operative. You are dedicated to your job and very good at what you do. You've done some very bad things, but they had to be done. You don't expect to go to heaven, but that is a sacrifice you've made for a better future for all.

Also, did you know there is a [livejournal.com profile] rayne_shippers comm? It pains me that they have the stupid name conflation thing going on but so it goes. Some of the fic is pretty good. But I can't wait for your fic! Hooray! They're so goofy together, it works.

The Mal-taking-River-out bugged me too :( SU tried to talk me into being okay with it: probably they didn't usually pull jobs when that many people needed subduing, so this was the first time her (now-known) talents would've come in handy . . . I guess I can buy that. But it did feel awfully clunky.

Date: 2005-10-05 01:00 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sarea-okelani.livejournal.com
Yeah. :( Jade was the one who suggested the whole "he didn't know she was a psychic" thing to make me feel better about it. It just still felt very un-Mal-like, but on the whole a small thing to forgive. Basically they regressed his character to the guy we first meet in the pilot -- I could see that guy doing what Mal was doing in the movie, you know? But he grows in just the 13 eps we see him in, and so it's jarring to see him back to his pilot character. Because the other thing he did that made me freak a little was when he threw the guy off the mule (and Zoe confronts him about it later) -- I also can only imagine pilot!Mal doing that. In the movie, also, they're apparently in dire straits; they don't seem to be as well off as they were on the show (partly, as they say, because of Simon and River), so that's another reason he might have regressed. And of course, there's the absence of Inara, but even the shipper in me doesn't think that's really what accounts for his slight personality changes. It's more the other stuff.

All that said, though, it still doesn't feel exactly right. <g>

From: [identity profile] significantowl.livejournal.com
I think you're v. right on Mal & regression - and you know, Kaylee's whole dynamic with Simon was also much more early!Kaylee than late. I guess Joss just had to simply things/relationships for a movie, but like you say, it doesn't feel right!

Gilmore Girls is absolutely amazing. My favourite show ever. And it's an intelligent show - the banter is witty and smart, not a lameass show where the jokes are stupid. Kind of like House. Which is also one of my favourite shows (because of Robert Sean Leonard :D)

The alarm thing has happened to my neighbors a couple of times. After you pull 2 false alarms, the security company starts fining you for every time it's a false alarm. At least, that's the way it works here.

Good news: I got WoW. Bad news, customs is making my life impossible. And I might not get it until next month. I gues we werent' mean to be. =(

TV Shows on DVD are the best idea ever! Unfortunately I just spent all my DVD budget for the rest of the year in single place (but it is going to be totally worth it!)

And that is a NICE Buffy set. It's so tempting, even though I would have no earthly reason for buying them. Damn them and their multiple versions of the same thing. *pout*

He! You are being a little too eager :p I haven't really thought about it, but I guess I'll go first with what I'm more comfortable roleplaying. A crafter gnome, most likely ;)

It's so tempting, even though I would have no earthly reason for buying them.

Well, those years of being broke have paid off at last - the only season of Buffy I own is the first one, and I had to stop watching the show regularly after Season 3, so for me this set is, like, the best thing ever ^_^
