Okay, first, does everyone know about ![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-community.gif)
propheting's Katrina relief fund efforts? Just want to make sure, because it's such a good cause (and you GET FIC!). Basically, you can bid on D/G authors to write whatever your heart desires, and the winning bid goes to the Red Cross. Most people don't even restrict what they'll write to D/G, so you can get them to write practically any pairing that interests you. Go check it out; some great authors are already up for grabs, so get your bids in (I'm not sure when bidding closes). Jade and I have both volunteered also, so I'll let you know when we're up (should be very soon).
Now on to the frivolous part of this entry.
1) My erstwhile roommates are now gone, and there's always this adjustment period I have to go through when I have company and then am suddenly alone again. There's this jumble of feelings: sadness, relief, loneliness, fear. The sadness and loneliness get canceled out by relief (I really prefer to live alone), and the fear (absent the security that two other people in your house provides) pretty much goes away. Especially as the Brinks people came on Sat. morning and I now have an alarm that could wake the dead when it goes off. My new fear is that I'll forget it's on in the middle of the night, or the morning before I've turned it off, and wander out of my bedroom, setting it off and creating a false emergency for law enforcement people. (And btw, yes, there is a way to turn the alarm on, but leave the motion detectors off. Whew.)

twiddlekinks drew Draco and Cho from "Playing Dirty"! It's super cute, and brings back some fond memories of the writing of that story. <3 Also, it took me until now to find this beautiful D/G drawing by starlettegurly, which she says was partially inspired by "A Bed Made for One." Yay! I'll totally take "partially inspired" by the mega-talented Kara. And last, but not least, here is the Luke/Lorelai by tiny_q that I commissioned for Jade's birthday. Seriously, is it not awesome? I don't know how all you artists do it.
3) My Lost S1 DVDs arrived last week. I'd never seen the show before, and have thus far avoided all mentions of it on my flist so as not to get spoiled. I was spoiled on something (fairly minor) when I was still watching Alias and would turn on the TV too early, but other than that, I began watching with a fairly clean slate. After Jade and Robbie left, I was pretty much glued to the TV. I've now almost finished all 6 discs, and I think I'm either at the finale or two eps from the finale.

*** I haven't watched the finale, so please don't spoil me on anything that happens after the episode where Michael, Walt, Jin, and Sawyer sail off on the raft and the other group finds the Black Rock. Thank you. ***
I'll structure this the same way I structure my HP canon thoughts: character/ships/plot.
Characters
Jack: I like Jack, but I don't like Jack. I like him as a character (and I like Matthew Fox), and I generally have enjoyed watching the flashbacks to his past. I thought that one ep where he's all freaked out about being the leader was extremely out of character given his behavior up to that point, but whatever.
Kate: I want to like her more than I do. I really like the whole deal where she was the one being escorted by the U.S. Marshal, and I don't really have any issues with Evangeline Lilly ... but I think her behavior on the island, considering her past, has been somewhat OOC as well. And the more I see of her past, the less I like her. I don't know what she did in order to be a wanted criminal at this point, since most of what we've seen (including how she got Tom killed) has been after she was already on the run. And I'm sorry, but the story of how she wanted that toy plane back, and broke into the bank to get it from the safe deposit box? Kinda lame and weak. If she wanted it that badly, why leave it in the backseat instead of quickly grabbing it? And staging a whole bank heist to get it -- why wouldn't the U.S. Marshal have had that location scoped, since he used the item to taunt her? All rather contrived. Right now I'm most intrigued by Kate's mom's reaction to seeing her daughter at the hospital -- what in the world did she (supposedly) do?? I hope the answer isn't disappointing. It's probably some misunderstanding that poor little Kate had to deal with, when really she's just an angel. 8-|
John Locke: Is he supposed to have an analogous relation to the political philosopher? This does sound like him, though, doesn't it? "Locke wants each of us to use reason to search after truth rather than simply accept the opinion of authorities or be subject to superstition." Well, the beginning part sounds like him; the latter part is not him at all, given his faith in the mystical forces of the island. I really like Terry O'Quinn, and I like his Locke. I really dig his story (the thing about his father was totally heartbreaking, though really, he should have known when it was the same dude who kept trying to put Christian Bale in jail in Newsies), and I find that I really like him, and want to trust him -- but I don't. They've shown him too often standing alone, with creepy/ominous music playing over his image, to make me feel that all is well with him. Plus there's the whole thing where he just seems kind of unbalanced -- his single-mindedness, hiding the hatch, his faith in "the island."
Sawyer: OMG HOT. I love Sawyer. I love his checkered, tragic past. I love his dimples and blue eyes. *sigh* I bet he'd clean up very well. I disliked him a LOT at first. He wasn't just an asshole, he was stupid. But the more we learned about him, the more I liked him. Now he's probably my favorite character. Can we say Redneck!Draco??
Charlie: Charlie annoys me. I don't dislike him, but generally I have no interest in him. A lot of people like Dominic Monaghan, and if I did, I'm sure that would help me like Charlie better. But I don't, so I don't. <g> And I was totally and completely done with him when he killed Ethan. That was the stupidest thing ever. And where the hell did his gun come from??
Claire: It took me awhile to like Claire, because a) pregnant women don't interest me; their issues are always the same (thus boring); b) I hated Tess (and blamed that partially on Emilie de Ravin, who played her). But I warmed to her, particularly after seeing her story (plus I was impressed by her Australian accent -- not knowing until just now at the IMDB that she is Australian, heehee). She's either greatly improved as an actress, or Roswell didn't give much for her to work with. I'm willing to believe that both is true.
Clarie's baby: I think she ought to name it Boone. Possibly his spirit went into it when he died. :D Was Claire's baby infected with evil when she disappeared, and that's why it needs her "goodness" and to be raised by her? But if the cause of it being evil is the byproduct of the psychic deliberately wanting to strand her there so she'd keep the baby, it doesn't make any sense. Also, the whole thing where he sends her to LA, ostensibly knowing the flight would crash on the way, doesn't make any sense. All he wanted was for her to raise the baby. When she saw him after refusing to sign the adoption papers, she was pretty much going to keep it. So why change his tune, looking like a total fraud, to make her do something she was already going to do? Just to ensure it? I dunno, that seems kind of weak. It'd probably have been stronger if he'd suggested the LA couple during the period when he was trying to convince her to keep it, and be like, "Okay, since you're determined to give it up..."
Sayid: I really liked Sayid right up until he got together with Shannon, and then I was kind of done with him. Plus his backstories don't interest me much. I still like him, but not as much as I did at first.
Hurley: Come on, who doesn't like Hurley? He rocks.
Boone: I was fairly good with Boone until the episode where he died, and then I liked him much more, and was soooo sad about him being the one to get killed off. I can't remember whether it was that episode or a previous one where we finally learn the backstory to his and Shannon's relationship, but I was really into that storyline. It was so, so sad that he died without her there, and obviously she was his last thought. I think that's probably why my feelings toward Sayid cooled. Poor Boone. I wish his death hadn't been the real one, because I wanted to see him get with Shannon! Grrr.
Shannon: Haaaaaaaated her initially. Grew to semi-like her, and then she was off diddling Sayid while Boone was dying, then hated her again. I'm not sure if I believe that she wasn't in love with Boone; I'm not sure she really knows what that feeling is, given what a total spoiled brat she was/is. But I'm back to neutral about her, after seeing her reaction to Boone's death and since Walt gave her Vincent. <3 Vincent.
Jin: I didn't even know Daniel Dae Kim was a regular on the show. I know him, of course, as Gavin from AtS. It's so weird to watch him play this character who can hardly speak a lick of English, when his English is flawless (since he grew up in the U.S.). I keep expecting him to break out in English (and I don't know why they didn't take advantage of it during his centric episodes, do the same thing that they did with Sayid, where they pan away for a second and then instead of subtitles they're speaking in English, though you understand that they're supposed to be speaking in their own language), or be the one who secretly knew English. Jin was someone I had to grow to like. I didn't like him at first, but that feeling thawed as the show went on.
Sun: I like Sun. I like the actress who plays her, and I dig her storyline.
Michael: Michael, like Sayid, was someone I grew to like less as the show progressed. He's just whiny, and belligerent, and his parental skills leave a lot to be desired. I know there are reasons for that, but I can't say it really much matters to me. I didn't like any of the people in his story, except maybe for Vincent.
Walt: I generally like Walt. I like that he told his father about burning the first raft. I'm interested to see where his storyline is going to go, considering we know he's "different." But I wish he'd told someone other than Locke not to open the hatch. *sigh*
Ships
Jack/Kate: Far too obvious from the beginning, thus earning it zero points in the "interesting" department. Also, as with all JJ Abrams ships, too much happens, too fast. The very first week, Kate drops everything, including the very important thingy that Sayid needed to get done, in order to help move rocks and get Jack out of the cave? WHATEVER. Like she even knows him at that point. And given her past, I can't believe that she would fall for someone that quickly, or trust them that quickly either. So it was out of character and far too soon for that kind of behavior even had she been a normal woman with no baggage.
Kate/Sawyer: I find this one more interesting to watch, but mostly because of Sawyer. But I like this one less than Jack/Kate, because a) I don't think Kate deserves Sawyer; b) she's obviously more interested in Jack, and Sawyer should have better than that; c) they're too alike (in a bad way, unlike Buffy and Spike, who I think are alike in a good way) and d) it's too much like shipping Draco/Hermione.
Charlie/Claire: This one kind of came out of nowhere, and I'm not particularly interested in it, since I don't like Charlie and Claire is only vaguely intriguing as a love interest.
Sayid/Shannon: As already said above, this one irritates me. I don't like it.
Shannon/Boone: Really liked this one, and was disappointed that it was clearly not going to work out.
Jin/Sun: Grew to like it. When I didn't like Jin I was rooting for Sun/Michael, but that's pretty much passed. It's soooooo tragic what they were each planning when they got to the airport in Sydney. :((
Claire/Sawyer: Okay, this isn't a canon ship, but I think it's the one I'd be most interested in. Jade mentioned it when I was on disc 2 or something, and I while I could see why it might interest her, I wasn't intrigued with it myself. But two moments in the upcoming eps changed my mind: 1) When Sawyer calls Claire "mamasita" and proceeds to brag, "She likes me."; 2) When his voice was the only thing that would calm her baby. <3 Sawyer needs a bit of goodness in his life, someone like Claire. And I think he'd probably be a really great dad for her baby -- and great between the sheets for her. <g> At this point, he's practically reformed, so I think this is a reasonable ship to sail on... (boy does that sound familiar).
Plot and Other Stuff
* One of the problems I've had with the show is that it introduces too many big/important things, and then 'forgets' about them until later -- but in a way that doesn't make any sense. Claire disappears, and there's NO search effort for her? If she hadn't wandered back on her own, how the hell did they expect to get her back? Or did they just give her up for dead? I mean, not even Charlie was like, "We have to organize a search party!" And what about Locke's legs? We're shown that he's losing feeling in them, and then after Boone dies he doesn't seem to have problems walking anymore -- so are they fixed again or what?
* The 'monster' in the woods? So not scary. I don't get scared by bushes moving around. We never get to see anything -- or even the hint of something. How the hell do they know it's huge, when it's like, invisible?! I hate that.
* Why was Jin shown to be all "let's keep to ourselves" when discussing the others with Sun, and then suddenly passing food out to people? WTF? That bit of OOCness made me think he was trying to poison them on purpose or something! Speaking of Jin, why did he freak out when he saw the watch on Michael's wrist? As if Michael's supposed to know it was something he was going to deliver to LA? As if Jin wouldn't know that given the circumstances, Michael wouldn't know jack shit and it wasn't a sign of disrespect or anything?
* I've really liked how much planning went into the overall storylines, and so we see all the little things that don't make sense at first, but then are connected together. JJ Abrams is really good at that -- Alias was the same way. I just hope Lost does not go the way Alias did, although I've given up hope re: any of his ships.
* I'm intrigued by what the numbers mean, and what the Black Rock is, and how everything fits together, but I'm also leery. It could be very cool, or it could be overhyped suspense, the way the stupid toy airplane was. My problem with it is that there are too many pieces, and I'm just not sure that they'll all tie up in a neat, cool bow. I'm afraid they'll X-Files it. And speaking of XF, I'm just not sure how much of it is going to be some science fiction/fantasy explanation -- whether it'll involve mystical forces, or aliens, or what.
* I don't know how/what they're going to do for S2 of this show. I mean ... is it going to be a Gilligan's Island thing, where they're just stuck there forever (until they get canceled)? Are they going to get a new group of plane crash survivors every season (I can't imagine that's the case)? Are they going to get off the island? None of those scenarios really appeal to me. Maybe they'll all wake up and it'll be 2 years in the future. </sarcasm>
* Continuity issue: Kate claims to be a vegetarian, but don't we see her eating bacon and eggs at the farmer's house in Sydney? Did she become a vegetarian during the subsequent time she spent there, which seems unlikely given that it's a farm and vegetarian food choices wouldn't exact be abundant?
Despite these issues here and there, I think it's a fantastic show. I'm glad I got to see it commercial-less and not drawn-out, and it's been very difficult to turn off my TV in order to sleep/clean/unpack. I know my mom will really like it, so that'll give her something to do when she visits next month while I'm at work. :D
But because I basically powered through all the episodes, I've missed all the dissecting of the episodes that goes on in fandom, and probably the nuances of certain characters/relationships as well. So have I missed anything? Other than the (no doubt big and important) stuff in the final eps?

That bit of OOCness made me think he was trying to poison them on purpose or something! Speaking of Jin, why did he freak out when he saw the watch on Michael's wrist? As if Michael's supposed to know it was something he was going to deliver to LA? As if Jin wouldn't know that given the circumstances, Michael wouldn't know jack shit and it wasn't a sign of disrespect or anything?
* I've really liked how much planning went into the overall storylines, and so we see all the little things that don't make sense at first, but then are connected together. JJ Abrams is really good at that -- Alias was the same way. I just hope Lost does not go the way Alias did, although I've given up hope re: any of his ships.
* I'm intrigued by what the numbers mean, and what the Black Rock is, and how everything fits together, but I'm also leery. It could be very cool, or it could be overhyped suspense, the way the stupid toy airplane was. My problem with it is that there are too many pieces, and I'm just not sure that they'll all tie up in a neat, cool bow. I'm afraid they'll X-Files it. And speaking of XF, I'm just not sure how much of it is going to be some science fiction/fantasy explanation -- whether it'll involve mystical forces, or aliens, or what.
* I don't know how/what they're going to do for S2 of this show. I mean ... is it going to be a Gilligan's Island thing, where they're just stuck there forever (until they get canceled)? Are they going to get a new group of plane crash survivors every season (I can't imagine that's the case)? Are they going to get off the island? None of those scenarios really appeal to me. Maybe they'll all wake up and it'll be 2 years in the future. </sarcasm>
* Continuity issue: Kate claims to be a vegetarian, but don't we see her eating bacon and eggs at the farmer's house in Sydney? Did she become a vegetarian during the subsequent time she spent there, which seems unlikely given that it's a farm and vegetarian food choices wouldn't exact be abundant?
Despite these issues here and there, I think it's a fantastic show. I'm glad I got to see it commercial-less and not drawn-out, and it's been very difficult to turn off my TV in order to sleep/clean/unpack. I know my mom will really like it, so that'll give her something to do when she visits next month while I'm at work. :D
But because I basically powered through all the episodes, I've missed all the dissecting of the episodes that goes on in fandom, and probably the nuances of certain characters/relationships as well. So have I missed anything? Other than the (no doubt big and important) stuff in the final eps?

Date: 2005-09-12 07:43 pm (UTC)I dug that it was Sun who was doing the poisoning, at Kate's behest. I liked that little glimpse of a dark side for Kate, and gave me a little hope that she may have actually done something truly bad, instead of merely being misunderstood from way back when.

Sun just barely edged Hurley out. If Locke weren't so creepy, he would make the list.
Vincent was also in contention. But my top 3 stands firm.

There ought to be a fic somewhere where the raft sets sail for many months, and Jin and Michael fall in love and Jin adopts Walt. :)))))
It wasn't really Kate's behest -- she just came up with the suggestion. Kate's had plenty of dark side moments, which is why I like her less the more I see of her past. And yet I just know that what she did, the "ultimate bad thing," won't actually be a bad thing at all. Or will have happened in a way that wasn't her fault, a gray area, or whatever.
I think my top 3 are: Sawyer, Sun, Locke, in terms of the storylines that interest me most. Vincent is so the best one.
