The D/G Feast Fic Contest!
Nov. 8th, 2004 11:48 amD/G and food ... I can't think of a combination that makes me happier. ; ) Sustenance for the soul, mind, and body. <g> As mentioned in my last post, here are the details of the fic contest I'm sponsoring. I've had such fun with the contests I've participated in lately that I really wanted to spread the experience to others.
I realize that this is probably not an ideal time to be holding a fic contest, what with people writing for Nanowrimo and Christmas fic drives and what not, but there's actually a very good reason for the timing. See, one of the requirements for an entry to The D/G Feast is a recipe of some kind -- and because I'll be in LA toward the end of December, Jade and I are going to use the opportunity to make ALL the recipes submitted, which is a way for entrants to get extra points. :D
So, to give everyone as much of a head start as possible -- entries are due by Dec. 26 -- here are the guidelines.
All entries MUST:
- Strongly feature Draco/Ginny.
- Include one recipe of some kind, either in context or at the end of the story. It is NOT required to make the recipe part of the story, but it should be mentioned in some way. Also, you may find this helpful: Alchemical Properties of Foods (Thanks to
kirixchi for the link!) - Be a minimum of 1,500 words, not counting headers and author's notes. No maximum on word count.
- Adhere to acceptable standards of grammar, punctuation, spelling, and characterization. These factors as well as story content and guideline adherence will determine placement.
- Be a new story that has not been posted to a major archive (Fiction Alley, Portkey, FanFiction.net, FIA, Restricted Section).
- All submissions will be posted to
the_feast once the contest is over, either by the author or by me. (This can also simply be a link to the story, hosted elsewhere.) - Stories can be of any rating.
- Even though we're near the holidays, a holiday theme is not required.
- Generally, if you follow the rules at FIA, you'll be fine.
- A panel of judges (
sarea_okelani,
jade_okelani,
akscully,
hannah_kim, and
sydney_lynne) will score each entry on a scale of 1-10. These individual scores will be added to create a final score. The entry with the highest final score will take first place. Second-highest score will take second place, etc. In the case of a tie,
ropo will serve as a tiebreaker judge. - Each entry will be stripped of author identity before being sent on to the judges for scoring, helping to ensure a certain level of objectivity.
- Up to three (3) extra points may be awarded to an entry's final score based on the quality of a recipe (i.e., If Jade and I think it's really yummy! <g>)
- None of the judges will be eligible to submit a fic entry. (One of our judges is still wavering on whether to submit an entry; should that happen she will be an entrant rather than a judge.)
Winners will be announced the week of January 19, 2005. The following prizes are in my hot little hands and just waiting to be awarded! I've provided links to pictures of what they look like. They are all officially licensed Harry Potter merchandise, except for the Jade fic, of course <g>. The prizes are as follows:
- A deluxe Slytherin scarf -- has the Slytherin crest and is made of lamb's wool, measuring 9 1/2 inches wide and 68 inches long (including the 1-inch tassels at the end)
- A Gryffindor scarf -- is about 56 inches long, made of a nylon/polyester blend, and has 2-inch tassels.
- A replica of Draco Malfoy's wand -- naturally a must have for any Draco fan. ; )
Second place winner gets your choice of the remaining two prizes after the first place winner has made his/her selection.
Third place winner receives the final remaining item (which might end up being your first choice anyway!).
Submitting your entry
- There is no "sign up" necessary to participate. Simply submit your entry by the date due.
- All submissions are due by December 26, 2004, at midnight PST. You can turn in your fic any time before then.
- Submissions should go to dgfeast[at]gmail.com. Please do NOT submit to the judges directly.
- Limit of two (2) entries per person.
I'd like to encourage as many people to participate as possible, so it'd be fantastic if you could spread the news by mentioning it in your journals or on message boards or communities as appropriate (if it is acceptable to do so and if it features an audience who would be interested). You can either link to this entry or post the rules in their entirety. After all, the more entries, the more D/G for all of us! : ) Also, if this works out, I may want to do this as an annual thing. <g> Your help in spreading the word is appreciated!
Feel free to ask questions. Thanks!!

Date: 2004-11-09 03:34 am (UTC)this isn't really related to the D/G contest (I'm not a writer, just a reader & reviewer), but I'd like to ask about some of your userpics. you know the vintage looking ones? with the text in times new roman ... i was wondering where you got those pictures or if you just found them by typing some stuff in google, what keywords you used. i need vintage pics for a 1920s project i'm doing, and so far, i've had no luck locating vintage-y pics like that.
thanks :D

Re: a question
Date: 2004-12-07 06:00 pm (UTC)Anyway, as stated, since Jade and I will be making every recipe, it would be rather difficult for us to make potions over the holiday (especially if you're talking about an HP-verse potion with newts eyes and stuff). <g> Or even if we did, we wouldn't be able to fairly compare it to the other entrants, since we'd be comparing apples to oranges. So ... yes. Best to stick with food.
Good luck if you decide to enter!

Date: 2004-12-26 04:41 am (UTC)Does this mean that the fic can only be uploaded to a major archive after the whole contest is over? Or does it simply mean that the story must be new, written specially for this contest?
