First batch of soap: made. We'll see how it turns out. I don't really have a good place for a soap lab, where I would feel safe knowing that the pets can't get to any of it. :/ I think, once K. and D. move all their stuff out of my garage, I can use that area for a small workshop. In fact, I know I can, because the former owner of this house was a very handy sort of guy, and he had a whole tool setup in there, put up extra lights, etc.

I didn't make a totally basic soap -- if you know me, you're probably not surprised. >.> I took the opportunity to try out some coloring (rose clay; it did NOT work) and fragrancing (orange essential oil; it may or may not have worked. Apparently citrus scents evaporate quickly in cold process soap).

Other details from the experience. )

Does anyone know anything about caring for orchids after their blossoms have fallen? I've been meaning to look it up but I feel like that will just bring me down another research hole. :)) Basically a couple months ago I got three gorgeous orchids from work that I took home. One of them got infested with some sort of bug, which didn't look like a bug, only bumps on the stem/flowers, but after looking it up, confirmed it was a bug. :/ It seemed to stunt the growth of that particular plant. And then all its flowers fell off, but it was sort of about time, because the second orchid's flowers also all fell off, even though it had been perfectly healthy otherwise (that I know of). I'm not sure if that first flower is a lost cause, and the bugs will always be there, or if now that the flowers have fallen and we can cut the stem off, we can be rid of the bugs that way?

Anyway, despite the fact that these two orchids both lost their blossoms around the same time, the third one that I kept in my bathroom was hale and hearty for weeks longer! I don't know why it kept its blossoms for so much longer, but I kept it on the windowsill above the tub with the window open (maybe it was the fresh air?), and it looked so nice. I wanted to get a picture of it before its blossoms inevitably fell, too, and I literally took this picture two days before they started wilting! Sheesh! (And then Jaime knocked the whole thing down and two of its leaves broke. :/ I hope that won't hurt it for next year. That would make me so sad.)

Speaking of Jaime, I took this shot back in April and meant to share then, but today it is! We were looking all over for him, and he wasn't responding, and finally I saw where he was hiding, lol.

My three mystery paintings from Afremov have arrived! I was actually kind of dreading them, because after the experience with Misty Mood 2, I was unconvinced that these would be ones I'd like, even though they're originals. But I love them! I do think it makes a huge difference when he does originals rather than replicas. I haven't decided where I'll put them yet

Check them out! )

In a final bit of yayness, at work we just moved into temporary digs where we have to all share this giant room (think YMCA gym) with like 75 other people. All our desks are crammed in there. I'm finally used to working in an open space instead of having my own office like I did for the first 10 years there, but this is so insane. It's supposed to be for only seven weeks, though I would be shocked if they actually finished remodeling our other space in time. To make things a little more tolerable for us while we're there, my GM is giving his team Bose QuietComfort 35 Bluetooth noise-canceling headphones, which is nice. I'm getting mine in silver.

Got an email from Birchbox today to ask me what my September box preferences are; I now have a lot more clarity on how the customization works. On a monthly basis, you get one of three choices:

1) Total surprise box - You don't know what any of the 5 samples are going to be, but they will tailor it based on your beauty profile.
2) Surprise + 1 box - You get to choose one sample from a selection they give you, and the other 4 will be based on your profile.
3) Know all 5 samples - They tell you what the 5 samples are.

I'm not too crazy about this month's "known" samples, so I'm going to go for the full-surprise box.

I've done something probably crazy, considering how my first experience turned out, but I have 3 more paintings from Afremov coming. I don't know what they look like; it'll be of their choosing. All I know is that they are original paintings.

Here's my thought process: I clearly like his original work more than the recreations, and these were reasonably priced. I specified that I preferred landscapes and flowers over people and music. If I don't like them, I can return them at their cost. So I feel like there's very little risk involved; they clearly pride themselves on their customer service. The worst thing that would happen would be that I would have to get some unwieldy paintings mailed back; since FedEx should be able to pick up, I'm willing to see what comes of this venture.

Football season is around the corner, and that means fantasy football is starting up again, too. I can't even remember how I did last season. I seem to recall that while I didn't win any of my leagues, I also wasn't too terrible. That could alllllll change this season.

Edit: Apparently I actually placed 3rd in one of my leagues! Well, that's exciting.

OH LARDY, LARDY.

I have a lard issue. This weekend [personal profile] adelagia went with me to Chef Shop, a local artisan food shop, so that I could pick up some rendered Mangalitsa leaf lard. I'm subscribed to their newsletter, and the latest issue was all about pie baking (mmm). I've actually rendered my own leaf lard before, but it was a long process and it made my house smell like pork for days, everything I used to make it was greasy for a long time, etc. This lard was reasonably priced and high quality, so score!

There was some confusion with the front counter people about the lard -- which one it was, the size, etc. They asked if I was planning to bake that day, and I said no (the lard was frozen solid, so how could I?!), I paid, and we went on our merry way.

Well just now I got a call from the shop, very apologetic, saying that they had given me the wrong lard. They had given me just regular lard, not the Mangalitsa leaf lard, and hoped I hadn't baked my pies yet. I said that I hadn't (thank goodness). The plan now is for me to go pick up the right lard sometime this week, and they said I could keep the lard I had. (On the one hand, I was glad they said this, because for sanitary reasons alone, that should be the case. They would have no way of knowing if I'd kept it at the right temperature, etc., so if they'd taken it back to sell to someone else, I would feel really skeptical of them as a food store operator. On the other hand, I have zero use for regular lard, especially four pounds of it, so I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do with it. I feel bad just throwing it out, though.) Also, apparently, they have new pricing on the leaf lard, so I'm actually going to get a credit on my credit card for the difference in price. So, other than the pain of having to go to Seattle twice, it's worked out OK.

I forgot to mention in my LA post that I tried Lyft for the first time! I've added those details now, in case anyone's interested.

1) My grass is so brown it's embarrassing. Normally in any other neighborhood, I could just be like, well I'm just being responsible by not using water. In this new neighborhood, however, we got a notice at the beginning of summer that it was time to water our lawns (which I ignored)! My neighbors' lawns (most of them) are still green. I'm expecting a reprimand from our homeowners association any day now. According to my manager, I don't really need to do anything to make it green again except water it, and maybe spread some grass seed around to reinforce. But part of me thinks it's dead, dead.

2) My paintings from Afremov arrived! I'm fine with both "Dinner" and "City by the Lake," but I'm not happy with "Misty Mood 2." :( The problem is that the original feels very ethereal, cold, and almost eerie. In the re-creation, he uses way too much red and orange, not enough purple and green, and so the feel, the mood, is totally lost. (Plus the finer details are lacking... third lamp not filled in, walkway that seems like a wall of ice rather than leading down into the distance.)

You be the judge. )

3) I've gotten interested in nail stamping. I bought a bunch of templates and stampers and polishes to give it a try. :D

[personal profile] adelagia got a painting for her new place by Afremov, and I loved it so much I had to go right out and get my own! I loved so much of his stuff, but I forced myself to narrow it down to 3. I think hers came out even better than the original, so I'm hoping I'll be really happy with mine. I'm keeping my fingers crossed though that they'll either arrive before I leave for LA (seems super unlikely) or after I get back. I don't want my mom to have to deal with having to handle them and what not, if she doesn't have to.

Speaking of LA... we leave on Saturday! Eeeeeeeeeeeeee!! Harry Potter World, here we come! WE ARE GOING TO DRINK ALL YOUR BUTTERBEER. We're also going to Knott's Berry Farm, do a "sorcerer's study" escape room, go on an Asian food odyssey, go to the beach, and if time and interest allow, do some sightseeing. Also gorge ourselves on Salt & Straw, which we discovered has opened locations down there. :O!!!

Like a couple of other gals in my office, I have replaced my office chair with a fitness ball, and I'm loving and hating it at the same time. I can feel it working, which is good, but I also feel uncomfortable, which is bad. Hopefully I get used to it soon. My posture is going to be SO GOOD.

Anyway, to the subject line of this post!

Spoilers for Orphan Black! )
