It is pouring rain today. In the middle of August. How wrong is that?
On Friday Jade and I went to Enchanted Village/Wild Waves, an "amusement park." That's in quotes because it was more like a glorified carnival. (Only there was no cute boy jumping precariously onto the ferris wheel to ask me out -- what's up with that?) The only reason we even went is because we have season passes to Six Flags theme parks, so why not? We should get as much use out of them as possible, right? We had our doubts as soon as we pulled into the parking lot. I mean, we could see the entrance. There was actually parking 20 feet away. We're used to Disneyland and Magic Mountain, where, after you park your car, you then have to ride a tram in order to actually get to the entrance. Anyway, so the place was small. V., v. small, and the coasters were ... well, let's put it this way: It's basically free to us, and we're still not going back. Admission is $30 usually! I never really appreciated what a great deal Magic Mountain was until this day. And okay, maybe if we had our bathing suits and were going to partake in the water rides part of the park, it would have seemed bigger, but as it was, we finished the park in less than three hours.
Jade and I wore our ThinkGeek shirts, generously given by
akscully, and we got comments about them alllll day. (Mine says "WTF?" while Jade's says "STFU." We now have pictures, but no way of getting them out of Jade's camera until she goes home. Blast!) There were these seriously hot guys standing in line next to us for one particular coaster, and you could tell they just went around the place flirting with everyone, because all these girls were being giggly and lame and trying to get their attention. The three guys were probably in their very early 20s, and two of them didn't have shirts on. They were all v. tanned and tall and had great arms/bodies. I admit it! Anyway, there were these two blond Russian chicks in front of us who were in bikinis, and they were all like "heeheehee" when Boy With Pretty Eyes tried to talk to them. The other shirtless boy went off on his own coaster, leaving Boy With Pretty Eyes and Shy Boy Who Kept His Shirt On (he made me think of Michael Moscovitz) to start talking to me and Jade about our shirts. Russian!Babes were not at all happy to have the boys' attention diverted. Hahaha.
Anyway, it turns out: Boy With Pretty Eyes is v. flirtatious but stupid. He should never open his mouth. He should simply stand there and let people look at him. Shy Boy Who Kept His Shirt On -- I would have liked to have talked to him more; he seemed sweet and not quite as stupid as his friend. I don't know where these guys came from, because they didn't at all look like brothers, but they were all similar looking w/ the cuteness/tallness/tannedness.
This Cute Boy Moment brought to you by the friend Amelia.
Later on, Jade and I both got airbrushed tattoos -- mine was of a cool-looking spider while hers was the moon/stars. All day we kept seeing kids we deemed to be Dracos/Ginnys/Rons. We didn't see any Harrys.
The best part of the day was when we went to Marie Callendar's afterward and had fresh peach pie. OMG there are no words to describe how delicious it is. I could eat a whole pie by myself! The whole thing! Every bite! Right now!
On Sat. we bid farewell to Robbie, who had an afternoon flight out. We consoled ourselves by going to
romanticalgirl's birthday party. :D We of course ate too much food (but got a wonderful recipe for this Asian ramen/almond cabbage slaw), and played Xbox with the guys and played Celebrity Taboo with the gals. We are remarkably well rounded. :))
Here's some awesome news: Jade and I are going to see RENT!!!!! We found out it was touring here totally on a fluke (thwarted restaurant plans; let's not speak of it). Normally I would have looked for something like this earlier, but of course, I had no idea she was coming. I've seen it once before, but it will be Jade's first time. Awwww, a RENT virgin. Anyway, we were trying to get tickets through Ticketmaster, but the venue said that it was actually best to get tickets directly from the box office. So we trudged into the city last night, had dinner at DragonFish (not worth the $$), and purchased tix. (Indeed, we got much better seats for less $$.) So exciting!! Also, this Thurs. we're going to a Melissa Etheridge concert. Jade is a huge fan and is treating, so I couldn't say no. Maybe I will become an ME fan afterward...
Last night, after yet another visit to Cold Stone (strawberry/French vanilla mixed with graham-cracker crust and almonds), we went to Barnes and Noble, where we found copies of The Time-Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. We'd been looking all over for it, so were v. pleased. Here's a blurb from Publisher's Weekly:
This clever and inventive tale works on three levels: as an intriguing science fiction concept, a realistic character study and a touching love story. Henry De Tamble is a Chicago librarian with "Chrono Displacement" disorder; at random times, he suddenly disappears without warning and finds himself in the past or future, usually at a time or place of importance in his life. This leads to some wonderful paradoxes. From his point of view, he first met his wife, Clare, when he was 28 and she was 20. She ran up to him exclaiming that she'd known him all her life. He, however, had never seen her before. But when he reaches his 40s, already married to Clare, he suddenly finds himself time travelling to Clare's childhood and meeting her as a six-year-old. The book alternates between Henry and Clare's points of view, and so does the narration. Reed ably expresses the longing of the one always left behind, the frustrations of their unusual lifestyle, and above all, her overriding love for Henry. Likewise, Burns evokes the fear of a man who never knows where or when he'll turn up, and his gratitude at having Clare, whose love is his anchor.
It has shades of Diana Gabaldon, only, of course, is really nothing like Outlander. Except for the time-traveling love story. But I mean, Claire and Clare are obviously like night and day.
We were flipping through my Face Forward coffee table book last night, and saw this pic of Julianne Moore. She is unbelievably gorgeous in this photo, and we have deemed her to be IYOK!Ginny: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v456/sareaokelani/juliannemoore.jpg

lissinthecity: SQUEEEEEEEEE!! Jade and I received your package yesterday. We loves it. It is our precioussssss. It's a shame Robbie has already left (well, for her), since she and Jade are absolutely Tim Tam MAD. They have considered flying to Australia before in order to buy Tim Tams, so you don't know how thrilled Jade and I were to see this extra treat in there!! However, if one of us dies in a Tim Tam-related squabble, it will go directly on your conscience.
akscully: Thank you for the shirts. I hope you have one of your own, since it encourages people to speak to you wherever you go. Or maybe, given what a hermit you are, you shouldn't have one, since it encourages people to speak to you wherever you go. Oh, and -- glad to hear you're not dead. We have greatly missed your particular brand of insipidness lunacy ...akscullyness. :-*
corianderstem and
leiliaxf: Are you guys free some time this weekend? A., I know you're probably going to be celebrating on Sat. with your honey, but would early Sunday afternoon or Friday evening work for either of you? I know Jade would love to see you guys before she leaves next Tues. And I have the latest edition of Celebrity Taboo! And Scene It! Come on, you know you wanna play.
I have written two 100-word drabbles (because that is all I have had time for). They were for
malfoy100: How to Get What You Want and The Fork in the Road.

2. Okay, but we have Veto power.
3. Yes, it was an unexpected treat. I try not to think of what great seats we could have gotten if only we'd known earlier. Blast!

...Everyone should have an uber-cheesy but lovely 30's love story come true for them. That would be cool.
2):O Magic tees that make yummy strangers talk to you?? This ice cream place you keep talking about? I need to move to the US. SOON.
3) Oooh. Funky Fics.

Date: 2004-08-24 11:23 pm (UTC)1) The BUMPER CARS. I knew I'd forgotten something. Damn!! It all would have happened if only I'd followed the formula.
2) They are totally like magic. Yes, move to the U.S., to eat ice cream and meet us. Or, you know, just visit. Better yet, we'll come to London and bring Cold Stone with us. Hmm, that's probably not the more sensible of the two plans...
3) What do you expect from 100 measly words?!

Date: 2004-08-24 11:46 pm (UTC)3) Dude, I love ficlets, drabbles etc. I almost prefer them to series works. Although you are not to take that in any way as discouragement in regards to IYOK. In no way whatsoever.

Date: 2004-08-25 05:50 pm (UTC)Anyway, Friday night won't work for Sharon, so yeah, whenever you've got an inkling about your plans, let us know. Jade leaves on Tues., so it's pretty much this weekend or bust (because we're such bad planners). We're looking at Sat. evening (I'm guessing you won't be free, but on the off chance <g>) or Sunday day.
In the meanwhile, happy early birthday! Maybe the following weekend we can do a bday dinner. *hugs*
