May. 24th, 2004 04:36 pmI remember the good old days, growing up as a wee lassie in the wilds of Southern California, when big, delicious avocados were 3 for $1. WTF happened to those days? Now they're $3 for 1. Grrr. So, buying avocadoes is normally kind of a treat. But now, as part of the effort to lower my cholesterol, I'm going to have to eat an avocado every day. Oh, the hardship. Eating an avocado every day helped lower cholesterol rates by 8%, while a low-fat diet only lowered by 5%! Yeah, screw the low-fat diet, I'm going on an avocado diet. :D Wow, imagine what you could do with both. Can you have negative cholesterol? :)) Of course, that's $80/month in avocadoes. Yikes.
Did you know there is 0 cholesterol in Doritos? What's that about? How can that be possible??

Date: 2004-05-24 11:52 pm (UTC)Egad! $3 for one avocado??? I used to live in the Santa Barbara area and the yummy produce was a major benefit (artichokes and strawberries especially). I can get avocados for $1.50/1 here, but that's about the best I can find unless there's a special at the produce stand.
I thought of you when I decided to make this for dinner tonight (but didn't due to lack of peppercorns). It's easy and yummy (even my kids will eat it).
Abode Chicken
1.5 lbs of chicken thighs or chicken legs
1/2 C cider vinegar
1/2 C soy sauce
1/4 C whole peppercorns
3-5 cloves of garlic
Brown chicken in Dutch oven in 1 T shortening (I use canola oil). Pour in rest of ingredients. Boil for 10-15 minutes covered. Remove lid and turn to medium heat. Cook until liquid is almost gone. Put chicken on cookie sheet; broil 6 minutes. Make sure to scrape the peppercorns off before eating, unless you like that kind of thing. :D

Couldn't resist.

Date: 2004-05-25 12:27 am (UTC)MYGOD. *moves to Mexico immediately*
That is ... that's so ... wrong. Why don't we import them?? Who are the imbeciles who run the U.S. Department of Agriculture? I must speak to them immediately. They'll probably try and give me "reasons" why we don't, but little do they know, I am not one to be reasoned with. Not when it comes to avocadoes. Then I'm like Homer Simpson.

Date: 2004-05-25 12:39 am (UTC)And last, avocados pay a considerable amount of taxes when imported from Mexico - our countries have always been fighting about what vegetables can be traded at what price, and avocados have always been one of the most debated over items. The USA says that they won't expor ti because of poor quality control and the risk of avocados being infected by fruit flies, and the agricultural union insist that the real reason is because they don't want their avocado production being crippled because of the Mexican avocado being larger and cheaper - I suspect the truth is somewhere in between.

Date: 2004-05-25 12:26 am (UTC)You must make homemade guacamole. It's so much better! I make it different every time, but I can give you the base recipe--well, I go by taste.
Peel, then slice in half and yank out the pit (I use the knife and just slice into it like I have a machete) of about four avocados. Mash with a fork, but not too much. Add sliced tomato, onion (whatever kind you like, I change depending if I want sweet or spicy), at least one clove of crushed garlic (I like more), some lemon juice (stick a fork in a lemon and just squeeze some over the avocados), salt, pepper, and the key ingredient is fresh cilantro, chopped. From there you can do your own thing. I put sour cream in it, or ground cumin, sometimes hot sauce. Whatever floats your boat. Mash together all ingredients with a fork until the consistency of oatmeal. :D
Oh, a Dutch oven is a big pot, about five quarts.

Ah, to be 14 and in a strapless dress again.
