more movies, and fanfic commentary!

Why didn't they just get it over with and name the Freddy Jones character in School of Rock 'Draco Malfoy'? That kid was seriously so Draco, particularly prior to the punk-rock hair. And I've always loved drummers. <333 And he even had his own Crabbe! Color me relieved that there was no subplot romance between him and Summer aka Hermione.
Since I've shared the very bad, now it's time to share the very best. These are the ten movies that blow me away. I can't even put them in any particular order, as they're all so different but good.
10 Best Movies
1. Empire of the Sun -- I know I said I couldn't order these, but this is probably my favorite from the list. <g> Christian Bale's first movie role ... he and the story are fantastic. He plays a young, aristocratic English boy who lived in Shanghai with his family when the Japanese invaded in 1941, and it's all about how he survives on his own.
2. American Beauty -- I think this was the first movie![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
ropo and I ever saw together. We walked out of the theater and went, "Whoa." If it had been some other movie, who knows if our friendship would have survived, since we never agree on anything. Anyway, this movie deserves all its accolades.
3. Fight Club -- It took me a long time to get around to seeing this, but when I finally did, it blew me the fuck away. Brad Pitt is great when he actually gets to be an actor instead of a pretty boy, and Edward Norton and Helena Bonham Carter are fabulous. I read the book afterward, and the film's actually better. Particularly given the plot, it works better visually, imho.
4. The End of the Affair (1999) -- So. freaking. well. done. IMHO Ralph Fiennes' best romantic leading role, and there is many a hot love scene between him and Julianne Moore. But that's not why it's good; it's good because the love story is so damn compelling and the way the story is told is very effective.
5. ET -- Oh, a total classic, and a movie that can always move me to tears. Little Drew Barrymore! The wilting flower! Penis breath! Oh, it was almost beyond its time. And it's held up over the years very well.
6. Sense & Sensibility (1995) -- Possibly my favorite Jane Austen adaptation. All the characters are well cast (though I often want to shoot the mother), the writing is tight and wickedly funny, and it's got the best kind of ending, where everything works out, but where it's all earned. I always bawl at the end when Hugh Grant shows up, but also when Elinor and Marianne have that confrontation about the secrets Elinor has kept.
7. Forrest Gump -- Ruuuuuun, Forrest, ruuuun! Hysterically funny as well as warm and touching, I don't know how anyone could not like this movie.
8. Dead Poets Society -- Duuuude, hot prep school boys. Josh Charles. Literature. Secret societies. Need I say more? Okay, I will. It's probably the only role Ethan Hawke's ever had that I've rooted for him 100%. Robin Williams should have won the Oscar for this role, though he was great in "Good Will Hunting." Coming of age stories are a dime a dozen, but it's rare that one's done so well.
9. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers -- I know I'm utterly alone in this, but I just reallllly like the second movie. I don't know if any LOTR movie can stay on my all-time top 10 list, but right now, it's got the spot. I think Legolas and the shield-skateboard do a lot to tip this one over RotK. The oliphant thing was cool, but a bit overdone and the graphics weren't as slick.
10. The Matrix -- The horrid sequels makes it tempting to leave this one off, but perhaps over time I'll forget those exist and I'll remember the original film in all its pure gloriousness. Totally blew my mind after the first time I saw it, and the fighting scenes actually elicited a gut reaction. My friend and I really wanted to go kick some ass after we left the theater. We settled for drinking and playing pool instead. :))
And this is for Fear:
1. When Ginny goes insane from external influences, Bill will be sorry for giving his sister writing tools, OH YES HE WILL.
2. Oh shut up, Hermione, Draco was there first! As if he would want to watch Harry and Ron fly when there's nothing to be gained from it. *grumble*
3. I love Pig. Hee.
4. You don't have many options, Draco, it's true. I think the only alternative I can see is to get hired at a wizarding club and strip for money. I'm afraid that's just what must be done.
5. I love all the Draco/Dumbledore interactions in this story. Dumbledore is one of the most difficult characters (imho) to write convincingly, but Fear, you do a smashing job. Plus I like that Draco doesn't suddenly think Dumbledore's just the best thing since sliced bread.
6. I adore this Draco being a Potions Master, in spite -- or maybe especially -- because w/ his sour disposition and scowly ways, he reminds me fondly of Snape, who's my favorite canon character.
7. Gah, I'm such a sucker for epistolary exchanges. I'm starting to wibble a bit that no one will ever discover their lurve and they'll have to keep it a secret forever. But Ron knows, right? Sort of? This will all have to come to a head soon, right? *wibble*
8. Haha, Draco at the head table while the others have to sit at the student tables. Oh, it's probably wrong how much I enjoy that.
9. It's been too long: Why doesn't Draco have Malfoy Manor to go back to, again? Before it was because Lucius was around, but that's not a fear any longer ... is it simply because all Malfoy assets have probably been seized by the Ministry?

Thank you! Dumbledore is a bit of a cipher to me, I must admit. I don't understand him at all.

Ron knows, yes. As do Zoe, Hermione, Harry, Dumbledore, most of the staff, and all the Aurors who happened to be in the hall just before the final battle. So things will eventually come to a head. Eventually.

His mother is on the Continent and hasn't talked to him, so he's not sure if he's even allowed to go home, and is assuming that he can't. Things are sort of up in the air re: Malfoy Manor, but essentially yes, it's been seized. I tried to imply this, but probably didn't do a great job.

I conveniently forgot that in my wibbling. I suppose it's because the staff's been really great so far about looking the other way, so I "forget" they all know. But from the conversation Hermione and Draco had in the stands, she (and therefore the male duo) doesn't know the full extent of what's gone on. For all they know, Draco and Ginny were just friends. Friends with benefits...

No, it was implied; I just wanted to make sure it wasn't something else that I had missed. When WIP novels are completed I usually go back and read the whole thing through in one sitting, which really helps me wrt continuity. Of course, now I've got to wait for one ... more ... part ...

I don't want it as an end to him either, but I do have to wrap the story up fairly shortly. I know where I'd like them to be in a few years, and it's not exactly where they will be at the end of the story. Maybe I'll have to write a follow-up fic or something.

I drank in Dark Directed with my morning coffee and plan to read it again, in its entirety, tonight when I’m kid and hubby free. Then I can enjoy it without any distractions. Mmmm It’s such a wonderful story.

But I actually liked the subplot, of Madeleine's sister and Daniel's "brother" more ... especially at the end. The actress had never been stand-out attractive, but when she's standing there and it's all slo-mo of her looking behind her ... she's transformed. So good.

Christian Bale? I like him, too!! I didn't know he had that many fans...I confess I haven't seen everything he is in, but what I have, he's so strangely appealing you know?
You know, I could NOT get into the movie version of sense and sensibility..in fact, I turned it off about ten minutes into it-i don't usually do that. Maybe I'll give it another shot.
