In a classic case of folie à deux, [personal profile] adelagia and I came up with a plan to have "oppa outings." Basically, we never know where to go or what to do, and we often employ the ladder game to make those incredibly difficult decisions for us. So much so that I actually created laminated ladders, to be used repeatedly. But sometimes it's hard for us to even choose a ladder to follow. And then we were like, what if an oppa chose the rung? Which led to, but how do we choose an oppa to follow? Which led to, wouldn't it be funny if we took an avatar of the chosen oppa to go with us on our adventures? And here we are. We decided on 8 oppas, and we are each responsible for obtaining the avatar/effigy of half of those. Then the person whose oppa it is has to write up the LJ entry.

Lucky me, our first two (and only) oppa adventures were both mine, so I am now completing that task.

Oppa Outing #1: Jackson

Our first oppa outing was with Jackson, not chosen at random, but chosen specifically because I needed to buy him an outfit at Build A Bear. (Thanks, [profile] jade_okelani!) I'm not even going to explain that madness because this whole thing is insane.

Anyway, Jackson's avatar is a monkey (with a backwards baseball cap, ideally), because his name on Hitmaker was Wang Kong ("wang" meaning "king" in both Chinese and Korean, and "kong" was, I believe, from the fact that he is from Hong Kong... so his name meant King Kong).

The Jacksons

This happened two Saturdays ago. We went to Gyu-kaku (Japanese BBQ) for lunch for the first time, and both really enjoyed it. Jackson isn't pictured because I didn't want him to smell like BBQ forevermore. [personal profile] adelagia got the Signature Combo, while I got the Choose Your Own 3-item Combo. I also upgraded to the garlic fried rice, which comes in a hot stone bowl and crisps up the rice. (I have been three times now, and my preferred meats are: short rib, toro beef, and pork belly. I'm not crazy about their red miso marinade. And I definitely recommend upgrading to the garlic fried rice.) While we didn't get any dessert this time, we got it the next time we went, so I'm including a pic of that anyway -- it's the Lady M cake, which is sort of a green tea crepe cake with tons of layers. It's pretty delicious, but it's also $9, which I'm not sure it's worth that.

Afterward, we went to Page Two Books, where a friend of mine/ex-coworker was doing a signing for the novella he'd published. Then we went to Build A Bear, where I bought Jackson a t-shirt and a baseball hat. Unfortunately, it looks better when it's worn normally, even though Jackson usually wears his backwards, because it's not actually a real baseball hat. :/ [personal profile] adelagia said that he looked like lunch lady when we put it on backwards lolol. :-L Jackson was offended.

We then went to our friend S.'s bridal shower, which wasn't as uncomfortable or boring as we had both feared.

Then we met [personal profile] slitherhither for dinner at Kiku. Because we had eaten at the bridal shower, I wasn't even that hungry when we went to dinner... and yet I still somehow managed to consume every bit of sashimi that I ordered. >< As well as all the ice cream and some of the pizookie I got at BJ's, where we went for dessert. >< ><

And thus concluded our first successful oppa outing!

Oppa Outing #2: Changsub

Changsub was actually our first randomized oppa selection. He is represented by Goofy because 1) Goofy was the character he portrayed in the BTOB music video for Winter's Tale; and 2) he is super goofy. (I actually wanted to get Pluto instead because Pluto is so much cuter than Goofy, but... well, when someone has literally dressed up as a specific Disney character, you sort of have to do it.)

The Changsubs

This was a less successful outing than our first, which wasn't Changsub's fault, but we constantly blamed Changsub anyway.

This was the day when I went completely insane and spent a RIDICULOUS amount of money on tickets to the BTS concert in September. WHICH I AM NOT GOING TO. I need to sell them, and hope that I can recoup all of that cost. Even thinking about it right now makes me go into panic mode. So let's move on.

After the thing that happened of which I will not speak, we went to our favorite seolleongtang place for lunch. We haven't been there in awhile, and we were looking forward to talking to the seolleongtang ahjussi (as we call him), because he is super nice and recognizes us every time, and has cutely thanked us for being repeat customers. The last time we attempted to eat there, it was lunchtime and PACKED with people, so we didn't end up going. But this time, HE WASN'T THERE!!! :( We figure it's that he doesn't work the lunch shift, which makes sense because that would make for a realllllly long day, but we were so disappointed not to see him (and to show that we had not abandoned his establishment!). I was looking forward to telling him "오랜만에요." (Long time no see.) Sigh. So from now on, we are only going there for dinner! Anyway, it was delicious as usual.

Afterward, we went to B&R Espresso, which we had both liked the look of, from their Yelp photos. It was a TERRIBLE DISAPPOINTMENT. It was kind of dumpy, the girl at the cash register had an obvious cold, and they had the TV blaring. I got an Americano, which was fine. We had intended to relax and do some story planning, but after a bit we decided to leave and try another coffee place. The next one, Asensio, was MUCH better. Here I got some hot (warm) apple cider. They had a couple of comfortable sitting areas, music instead of a TV, and more of a Starbucks vibe. But you know what has the Starbucks vibe we were looking for? THAT'S RIGHT, STARBUCKS. Like seriously we should probably just go there next time. But it can get so crowded, and I think we both liked the idea of supporting a small business. We have a couple of other places to try, so we'll see what happens.

After that we went to noraebang! We managed to fill 2.5 hours with our atrocious singing and not repeat any songs, which was cool. We tried a few new songs, and Falling Blossoms aka Aftermath aka 후유증 was really fun. Of course, I say that because [personal profile] adelagia is responsible for all the harmonizing, which I cannot do to save my life. IT'S SORCERY.

First Ave Karaoke

For dinner we went to So Moon Nan Jib, which is one of my fave new Korean places. It's so delicious! I have been there to BBQ with my coworker C. (we ordered the BBQ set intended for 6 people and managed to pretty much eat it all -- so shameful), and the other two times I've ordered the gamjatang, which is literally translated to potato soup, but actually has tons of bone-in pork in it. I don't know.

And the day was not yet over! We ended it with a trip to the 9th circle of Hell, aka IKEA. I haven't been there in like 20+ years, and I sure hope they enjoy the $42 that I gave them on this trip, because it will be another 20+ years before I go back. Normally that freeway exit is always bottlenecked because of everyone going to IKEA in the middle of the day. I figured it would be better at night (just like Costco!), and it was. Traffic was light, and we found a pretty good parking space almost immediately. Walking through the store was fine. [personal profile] adelagia couldn't find the lightbulb she wanted, but we both got the picture frames we had actually gone for (for our Sungjae and Ilhoon posters). We didn't have a cart, so we lugged those kinda heavy and large frames to checkout... and there we stayed, for like 5 hours, give or take a few hours. I mean the line was RIDICULOUS. The picture doesn't do it anywhere near justice. It was probably two dozen people deep or so per line? I don't know if it was because they didn't have many cashiers due to the lateness of the hour or what, but if it's like that during the day too, I don't know how anyone can stand it. Changsub got tired from being carried around all day.

IKEA IKEA

We also wanted some foodstuffs -- marmalade for [personal profile] adelagia and meatballs for me (I've heard SO MUCH about the Swedish meatballs there). As we waited in that interminable line, dragging our frames along with us, we would peer off into the distance beyond the checkout lines, and we saw that there was a food court on the other side, with perhaps a pantry area where other prepared foods could be purchased...? As we got closer, we could see that it was indeed a food court, and that there were in fact prepared items that we could buy, but there was a whole other long line for it. It was horrific. "I guess I don't need marmalade," [personal profile] adelagia said sadly. But I had a plan! I said, okay, you pay for the frames and I'll go get the food items we want and start standing in that line. I found the marmalade, but it was orange and elderflower, and since I wasn't sure if that was right, I sent her a pic -- seriously, how did people LIVE without phones and/or the internet??? I would have had to walk that jar back to her to ask if it was the right one. [personal profile] adelagia wanted 2 jars (no one's judging, girl loves her marmalade, there's nothing wrong or excessive about that), and since I love elderflower, I decided to get a jar for myself. I also found the meatballs -- or what I think are the meatballs -- I had heard that there was a sauce involved, but these seemed sauceless, so I might have gotten them for nothing. ANYWAY, I went to get in the food line, but IT WAS SO LONG. And my feet hurt and I mentally could not deal with the idea of standing in another fucking line. It was then that I had an epiphany... I took my 3 jars of marmalade and bag of frozen meatballs back to where [personal profile] adelagia was just about next in line, and asked the cashier if we could pay for the food items there. She said yes. HALLELUJAH!!!!

Finally, finally, we were then released from our captivity and returned home. Thanks, Changsub.
