Organizing!
Oct. 22nd, 2017 08:32 pmHmm, wow, okay, apparently I never completed my thoughts about the Hwarang watch. Oh well, K-drama update another day!
Today's post is going to be about cleaning and organizing! That's right, it's that once in a blue moon post.
Looks like I've hired a housekeeper! I hope she works out. Basically, at my old house I had someone come fairly regularly to clean the place. I never actually met her, funnily enough, but I felt a level of trust and comfort with her. I didn't want to make extra keys, so on the days she came I would just leave the front door unlocked and she'd lock it on the way out. Her work was good, if not completely thorough, but she would do nice things like buy me a new shower curtain lining because the one I had was getting too old, without asking. I paid her back, of course, but just that she gave it any thought was nice. We communicated primarily by email, though I'd also leave her notes at the house if I had any special instructions or just wanted to thank her. Anyway, she already lived kind of far away from that house, and when I moved, it was just too far for her to follow. Sooooo even though it's been at the back of my mind to hire someone else (but not go through an actual maid service, which I find expensive and sketchy) for a really long time (almost two years, since I moved!), finding that really good housekeeper who was nice, good at her job, reasonably priced, worked in my area, and could be trustworthy just seemed like a really daunting task.
But last weekend I saw Ginger, my stylist, and she was raving about her housekeeper, Martha, who was all of those things. She gave me her info, and I got in touch with Martha. She came by on Wednesday to look the house and give me an estimate, and she seemed perfectly nice. She actually came with her 5-year-old son, which was unexpected but no big deal (probably because school gets out early on Wednesdays). I don't think the rate she quoted was as good a deal as Ginger is getting, but I expected that. And it's definitely more than I was paying my previous housekeeper, but that's comparing apples to oranges because the house is much bigger. The first cleaning is going to cost a little more -- also expected -- and is scheduled for October 30. So we'll see how much I like her work, though I've already scheduled the cleaning after that, lol. I don't think I'll have a true sense for it until she's done it a few times. Right now I'm only having her come monthly, because it's not like my mom and I create that much of a mess. So we'll see. Fingers crossed! I would really love for her to work out.
On the organizational front, I am IN LOVE with my new makeup organizer. I can't even recall what prompted me to look for something like this on Amazon, and there were a number of good choices, but I'm happy with the one I ended up choosing. Maybe what prompted me was simply that my counter was becoming OVERRUN by all the new lipsticks I've been getting. Not to mention allllll the samples that I have. The awesome thing is that the makeup organizer actually fit much more than I was expecting. Not only is it able to store all the lipstick I have; it actually is able to store a ton of my samples! (Excludes: hair care samples, which I have another storage area for; packet samples, which I keep in a drawer; and brushes/eye liner pencils and such, because I have another organizer for those.) The carousel rotates, which is a must. It is a little bit of a pain to get to stuff in the back, but not a huge deal. The shelving is adjustable, so I was able to make one of the shelves really long to fit my perfume, while the other shelves I just made of varying sizes to have options.
I'm so pleased with it I've also ordered an organizer for nail polish, because that, too, is out of control.
Another inspiration for all this is
slitherhither, who was talking about kitchen cabinet organization the other day. I'm planning to keep an inventory of all the stuff in my cabinet that basically gets lost/forgotten because they're shoved so deep in the back it's like they might as well not exist. Only, I don't have the patience to collect wooden boxes/printer paper lids as she suggested, and have simply just purchased more organizer-type baskets off Amazon. I've gotta take advantage of this desire to organize while I'm still feeling it.
