As previously mentioned, I neglected to update when I finished S2 oh so many moons ago. I think my biggest take away from the last half of S2 to the finale was pretty much the same as I'd been saying all along -- 1) Tatiana Maslany is amazing; 2) I don't understand the mythology; and 3) how long as they going to keep Kira around? The last because keeping a child actor around for series TV is difficult, given how quickly kids age, and narratively in this case, because she's sort of this useless appendage that is only around to serve as a mystical lodestone and as a source angst for the adults around her. I was kind of confused and disappointed by the finale itself. I don't understand what Michelle Forbes' motives were or why she had yet another Sarah clone. The boy clone seemed like the show was jumping the shark a bit, since it came out of nowhere, and I was underwhelmed by the reveal of who it was. The actor or the character he played up until that point hadn't exactly been all that compelling. And really, if they're going to go there, he better be AMAZING, considering how stellar Tatiana is.
So, S3.
- I still don't understand what happened with Paul. What were his motives all along? Was it always his intention to be captured by Dyad so he could infiltrate it from the inside? Did he always know about the clones, or did he take advantage of the knowledge once Sarah revealed it to him? His character is a total fuzzy mystery, and not really in a good way.
- As much as I love Tatiana, and continue to be amazed by her talent, I'm also getting a little tired of the overall story, which doesn't seem to change. One or more of the clones are in trouble! Kira might get kidnapped! Even though they keep using the same hideouts over and over, and Felix's apartment is like Grand Central Station, no one ever thinks to look for her there! S. does something shady that pisses Sarah off! The clones have to pretend to be another clone! I actually love when that happens, because it's pretty amazing watching Tatiana act like a clone pretending to be another clone, but still... at this point I'd rather see some compelling story movement.
- I think that's what they're trying to do with Castor, but right now I have no idea what I'm supposed to think of him. Contrary to what the show thinks, I'm not automatically interested in him just because he's a boy clone. What are their motives? Were they raised self aware? Do they all know about each other?
- Not every question has to be answered right away, but right now the show is reminding me more of Colony and The Man in the High Castle than S1 Orphan Black/i>, 12 Monkeys or Lost. The latter two (Lost until about S3) are/were very good about stringing you along with the mystery, but keeping you intrigued while still holding blockbuster/interesting stuff back. They didn't just keep you in a dark cave with a guttering candle, which is what the storyline for a lot of shows feels like, including what Orphan Black is like right now.
- Why the hell would Rudy, who didn't seem to give a shit about anyone but Seth, spare Kira, especially as he didn't even get what he came for? The whole thing was a very obvious way to finally get Kira (and Cal) off the show.
- And why the hell would Seth not kill S.?? They don't seem particularly moralistic or anti-murder to me.
- I am supportive of this move though, because with Kira around, things were just super repetitive and one note. Even though it makes no sense that she would be able to easily escape the clutches of very powerful people who are after her, I'll let it go.
- I'm finally starting to like Delphine. I'm liking the new strength/hardness I'm seeing in her now. It was particularly horrifying but compelling when she was questioning Rachel.
- I continue to like but am exasperated by Helena. I also did not realize she was supposed to be an albino until Felix mentioned it. Shouldn't she have red eyes though...?
- Since when did Sarah feel so much for Helena, btw? The way she lost it at S. about giving up Helena for Kira felt more like her issues with S. as a parent than because she legitimately felt so much for Helena. As if she wouldn't have done the same... or been okay with anyone else making the same choice. This whole time everything has been for Kira, Kira, Kira. S. made a difficult choice, but even Helena probably would have been okay with it, given how much the adults around her seem to adore Kira.
- S3 also felt like a very deliberate attempt for them to re-brand Sarah as the 'punk' girl, which she had totally lost by S2. She was just 'the normal girl' very quickly (initially because she was playing Beth, but then because she was just assimilated or something). But in S3, suddenly her punk hair is back, her punk makeup, etc.
- I'm feeling really meeeeehhhh about Alison's storyline. Even last season, with the musical and the rehab, they were starting to lose me -- her domestic issues seem so uninteresting/minor compared to the overall story -- and now I'm even less interested in her dispute with some other woman over a little community election. -.- I guess they're sort of turning her into Walter White, soccer mom version, except instead of Donnie, I would have been more interested to see her work with Ramon, who is a cutie, and could have been her Jesse Pinkman.
- Is Cosima miraculously better because Kira brought her back from the brink of death (or maybe she actually was dead?) or something? Can I mention again how glad I am that Kira, magic little creature who can conveniently cure all ills, is gone? :/
- Also, dare I hope that this means Art will be brought back to the forefront of the show?
- Thank goodness no one puts me through the mental gymnastics that Paul put the Castor brothers through. Those are exactly the types of questions that made me fail the LSAT! And they had to answer in seconds! My brain was still processing what the questions even were, lol.
Subject line: Helena, when put through the same LSAT test Scarry Spice and Stache Spice were put through. (I can't take credit for the awesome nicknames, which came from here.
