Oh my. Time got away from me today, I meant to post this a lot sooner.
Here's a popular fan theory:
Dany and Jon will end up together. Oh god, BARF. This is the one theory above all others that I hope does not come true. I didn’t want it to be true even when I liked Dany, much less now, when I’m more or less tired of and annoyed by her. GRRM is not telling a gritty tale, and in some ways ASOIAF is actually rather romantic. But this would be cheese. I have no textual evidence against this theory. It’s allllll just gut reaction. No one has any evidence, really, to support this one way or another, because they haven’t even met yet. But I would say that while Targaryens practiced incest for a long time and are inured to it, Starks (and the rest of the Seven Kingdoms) did not. Even if Jon is a Targaryen by blood, he was raised a Stark, and I don’t see him being unsquicked by the fact that Dany’s his aunt.
Even putting aside the fact that Jon is Dany’s nephew, it’s abhorrent to me. Why? Because narratively, it’s incredibly uninteresting. It ties everything up in a neat little bow. They’re an “obvious” pairing, because they both seem to be headed to the same place in terms of saving the realm. They both seem to have claims on the throne (assuming R+L=J). They’re of an age and attractive. All the reasons J+D supporters use to support their ship are all the same reasons why I hate it. It’s too easy, and therefore, unsatisfying. It’s not realistic, and makes too much of a saccharine ending. This, actually, is why I hold onto GRRM’s statement that the ending of the series is going to be “bittersweet,” like a lifeline. It seems to indicate that such a pat, perfect ending will not take place. I think I’d rather see Jon die for real than see him end up with Dany, and them King and Queen of Westeros.
