WWW: I Love You Second Best
Mar. 14th, 2003 03:51 pmOutside the characters of Harry, Draco, Hermione, Ginny, and Ron, who seem to be favorites on this list, what character stands out the most to you in fanfic? What makes this character so special? Have they always stood out for you in canon, or has reading fanfic given you new insight to them?
Everyone has brought up really interesting points, so this is basically going to be a big "me too" email, although the details are a bit different.
Favorite character in canon prior to fanfic was: Snape. He just cracked my ass up. Yes, I found him funny because he was so bad-tempered and intolerant. And he was the most fascinating in terms of his loyalties and current situation. An ex-Death Eater? How did that come about? And if he's "good" now, why does he favor students like Draco Malfoy, who is like the posterchild of Young Death Eater-dom? And when the Malfoys are clearly still enamored of the Dark Lord? Still can't wait to find out more. But I'm faaaaaaaaar less interested in him in fanfic, however. Don't know why that is. I differ from some of the others who have replied because I don't see Snape as a sexual character. Hey! I am not trying to argue that he's NOT one or that anyone is odd for thinking so -- just that, I don't.
Tom Riddle, however, is also a good choice, for all the reasons that Sydney expresses. Why all the hatred toward Muggles, when he's half-Muggle? How can purebloods buy into his power and the idea that purebloods are superior, if Voldemort himself isn't a pureblood?
And here's a random character fave (I know I'm going way beyond the bounds of the topic now, but when has that ever stopped me before?): Do you have a favorite Weasley twin? For some bizarre reason, I do. I haven't memorized the texts or anything, so I can't even say that it's because Fred is the funnier or the nicer one ... but I must have gotten that impression *somehow*, because I definitely do have a twin preference and it's Fred. ; ) Any George-lovers want to take it up with me?

Me?

Date: 2003-03-17 02:11 pm (UTC)BTW thought your dissertation on Potterotica was excellent ... I've been privy to similar discussions re: "smut" and fandoms in the past, but never wrt HP. Liked that you touched so many various points and tied it all up in a cohesive way ... I probably wouldn't even have attempted to do such a thing -- too daunting. <g> But now I can just point people to your entry when/if it comes up again. Heehee.
This is a whole other can of worms, but -- what are your feelings about RPF (real-person fic)? It doesn't apply, really, to HP fandom as much, but I wondered what your position on that would be. I've participated in many discussions about that, as well, and I think it vaguely relates to what you were talking about; it all has to do with fictional writing and how is too far -- if there is a too far.
