Oh that wicked, wicked Kingslayer.
- OK, it's kind of precious that Jaime's never slept with anyone but Cersei. And meanwhile she's getting off with that 16-year-old cousin, lol. But at least we finally get to see some more of Jaime! He seems totally unredeemable, but I seem to recall
akscully saying something about character growth, so I suppose that remains to be seen.
- I still bear little love for Catelyn, but man, that really must suck to think that all the sons you've borne but one are dead. For a few chapters I totally believed it too, and was sadder than I expected to be about Bran/Rickon. Plus I knew that Robb is going to die at some point also, so then there would be no trueborn Stark sons left. I was like, wow, GRRM is really determined to make Jon Snow Lord of Winterfell. :))
- Seriously, even after Ned died Catelyn couldn't bring herself to wonder how Jon was faring, etc., even though he is also part of Ned? This part of her, the part that is so cold to Jon, makes me continue to feel less than warm toward her. It would be totally different if Ned had been some profligate cheater, and had Jon under different circumstances. But again, THEY BARELY EVEN KNEW EACH OTHER. Sure, they grew to love one another after time, but Jon was already a permanent fixture by that time; he wasn't the evidence of betrayal of that love!
- The more I think about it, the more impossible it seems that Ned would have cheated on Catelyn, regardless of how he felt about her at the time. His bloody honor is so important to him that he flings everything else aside in its name; there's just no way he would have dishonored himself by having an affair. I agree with
ceilidh though, it's really sad that he couldn't have seen fit to share the secret with Catelyn, when they apparently had a very good marriage/relationship. Once again, he was HONOR BOUND to the promise he had made Lyanna (as many suspect). That would DEFINITELY have improved Catelyn's relationship with Jon, but I still stand by the fact that she should be big hearted enough not to blame the KID, especially under THOSE circumstances.
- Seriously, WTF Theon? Like, I knew I didn't like him, but I didn't know he could be THAT much of a punkass. OMG at the recounting of him beheading the houndmaster, Farlen or whatever -- how many swings did it take?! Jesus Christ. But like, really, I have no words for how vile I think he is. To turn against all the people who treated him so well ... and I understand that until age 10 he was raised a certain way/with a certain belief, and from that point on he was a 'hostage' ... but if Ned couldn't change him then it was already too late, he was already hopeless. Kind of like Joffrey. I mean, I guess at least Theon feels some sense of guilt when he does evil things? Except he does them anyway, and all in the pursuit of self interest, because he wants to have power. So that might even be worse, to know something is evil and to do it/condone it anyway. And sure, he might not have actually killed Bran/Rickon (yay Hodor and Osha, btw), but that's only because he couldn't find them; I have no doubt he would have. And what he did was evil enough, killing that whole family, especially the little kids, so that he could tell the world he'd done it. What exactly was his plan going to be when Bran/Rickon showed up elsewhere? He gives no forethought to things; just rushes in and does whatever he pleases -- which usually involves him getting some semblance of power, no matter how tenuous it is. I mean, really, taking over Winterfell and thinking it can keep it, just like that? Though it does kind of speak to the fact that it did affect him during those years there; he 'loves' it so much that he wants it to be his.
- Ugh, why doesn't Joffrey die already?
- All the stuff with Sansa/The Hound is very touching. I mean, I don't know if it's a romance, per se, but it doesn't give me any ick feelings. Then again, the bar is very low for this universe, LOL. But when she sang that song and he cried, I was moved. It's just ... what will COME of this? He's still a 'bad guy' (I like how complicated so many of these characters are); I can't imagine him serving as like, an official guardian for her should she ever be rescued. Obviously he'll have to die for her at some point, I guess. Sigh.
- WTF is Arya's problem? I don't understand why she doesn't just reveal herself now. It was smart not to before, when Harrenhal was under Tywin Lannister's command, but now it's Roose Bolton, who is one of Robb's bannermen, right? And doesn't seem all that bad, other than not exactly being a kind man. He doesn't seem like he's without honor though, or that he'd do her wrong if she revealed herself, so why doesn't she? Why wouldn't she reveal who she is, so she can GTFO, already, w/o having to continue to hide and what not?
- The whole thing w/ Renly's death, and then the one castellan who was protecting Robert's bastard son, and everything to do with Melisandre, is just so creepy. I mean, being hugely pregnant and then giving birth to a shadow? So evil. The fact that Stannis would change his House banner and fall under her spell is the one reason I just cannot support him for Prez. But then, WTF, Renly came BACK? So. confused. Unless he's like a ghost/demon now? And maybe Melisandre made it so Stannis would lose, because he sent her away?
- Very cool about magic coming back into the world because dragons are back. Even so, I have to say that Daenerys's storyline is really starting to bore me. Also, I find her kind of annoying. I mean, if you actually made me choose, I'd support her claim over the others, because it seems to me that the Targaryens were actually touched by God or gods or whoever to rule, when they kind of have an unbeatable mascot. Dragons are not only powerful in themselves, but apparently are responsible for all the magic in the world. The House that rules them, that they obey, and the way these newest 3 came to life, for pete's sake, totally shows some kind of divine right. Still, that doesn't make her any less irritating when she's being all mother-blood-of-dragons-rightful-queen as a 15-year-old girl.
- I was totally stunned/surprised/shocked by Jaqen H'ghar. The way he spoke gave me the creeps, and the fact that he was chained up by Yoren w/ those other two horrors just made me think he was bad news. When Arya saved them, I totally thought it was either going to bite her in the ass, or help her later on. I didn't think it would be that much though. Cuz boy did it help her! Very clever of her to say Jaqen's name as her 3rd name. :D Still, when he transformed I was like, whoa! Who IS he?! What was he doing as Jaqen? Was he just there, put in her path, to help her? Or was that a coincidence?
- I have to admit, the chapters that dealt with the ocean battle and attempted sack of King's Landing, I skimmed. It's like, yeah yeah, it's the results that are interesting!
And now onto A Storm of Swords.
