What the hell this is, and how you can play.
1 -- Leave a comment, saying you want to be interviewed.
2 -- I will respond; I'll ask you five questions.
3 -- You'll update your journal with my five questions, and your five answers.
4 -- You'll include this explanation.
5 -- You'll ask other people five questions when they want to be interviewed.

As far as I'm concerned, people who have already been interviewed by other people can still apply. After all, my questions will (hopefully) be different. Or if for some bizarre reason you still want to ask me questions after this, I will applaud your bravery and answer them.

Also I get really rambly and verbose, which is nothing new, but it's also 2am so my weaknesses are magnified.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] sydney_lynne for the questions!

1. Tell me about the Pacific Northwest. What's the best and worst thing about living there? Where would you move to if money was not an issue?

Ah, the Pacific Northwest. I have to say, I'm a little biased, because I wouldn't be here if not for my job. I'm away from my friends and my family, and I don't really like my job all that much. So this reflects poorly on the area, which isn't fair, but I can't help it. I'll try to be as objective as I can. So, worst thing, for me, would be the fact that I'm away from "home" and I'm none too enamored of the area (it's not a very "interesting" place to live, imho -- unlike DC, where I was before moving here). Plus the rain. Gah, it rains sooooo much it's crazy. It didn't bother me at the beginning, but man, it bothers me now. Best thing: When it actually stops raining, it's gorgeous. The summers are usually really nice (that is, if we get a real summer, the way we have this year) -- usually hovers in the 80s, the skies are really clear and blue, and being around water all the time is awesome. If the Puget Sound area were like this all year long, I don't think I'd have as many issues. People are also really laid back, which is a big change from LA and DC.

Edited to add: Ooops, I forgot to answer the second part of this question. If I could live anywhere in the world, I'm pretty sure I'd pick London. I absolutely loved it the couple of times I've been there, and it has everything that I love: historical beauty, mad shopping, theatre, people who speak with British accents, scones like we don't get in the U.S., a rockin' tube system, and is just hours away from other fun and cool countries like Ireland. :D

2. How did you get into the D/G ship and what makes it your OTP in the Harry Potter fandom? Do you find them similar to any other ships you support in other books/movies/tv shows?

I got into D/G by reading the DT -- or more specifically, DS. Originally I had actually been into D/Hr because of DD (funny because I hate that ship w/ the white-hot intensity of a thousand suns now), but it didn't take me long to adore D/G. Of course, it's all very ironic that the DT is what got me into D/G in the first place, when Cassie herself seems rather anti-Ginny and I have no idea how that trilogy will end. She doesn't seem entirely anti-D/G (and actually claims to like it), but the way she's spoken about it in the past makes me think it's pretty low on the totem pole. So I wonder how she'd feel to know that she'd spawned all these D/G fans, particularly if she intends to give them the shaft in the DT. (I don't know she will; I'm just being hypothetical!)

I'm not sure why they're my OTP. I'm a little too close to the situation, I think, to speak on it objectively; maybe it's just a gut preference. I mean, I could say that I love the idea of opposites attracting, but in some ways, Hermione would be more of an "opposite" than Ginny. I mean, Draco's all about his pureblood heritage, so Hermione, as a mudblood, would be the total opposite of that, whereas Ginny herself is a pureblood. Of course, her Weasley status would rather negate that in Draco's eyes (not to mention that they're Muggle sympathizers), and she's also poor as a church mouse while he's wealthier than Croesus (Hermione seems financially stable). Plus there's already established tension between their families. I love the idea of two people who don't have anything in common and who should never, ever be together being drawn to one another. I also think that their personalities -- whether Ginny is shy or spunky -- would mesh well (yin and yang), whereas I think canon Hermione would only be grating to Draco and vice versa (yang and yang). But of course, that's only my personal viewpoint. I'm sure D/Hr shippers would say differently.

Also, I find D/G slightly more probable in canon context, although that's not why I ship them (I'd be in for a world of disappointment, LOL!). The enmity between Draco and Hermione in the novels does not feel like UST to me, but actual, real loathing. Whereas Ginny and Draco have shown no personal hatred (though that could also be because it's all seen through Harry's eyes, or because Ginny and Draco have had no cause to interact as much as Draco and the trio). Even OotP has helped the situation somewhat, as now Ginny has been shown to have some spunk and also date boys that her brother and Harry have no idea about. And in canon, Hermione already seems promised to Ron (or Harry, but I think Ron), and that's already been so slow to happen that I just don't see JKR attempting anything with Draco. It'd make for some pretty interesting tension if Ron's little sister began to date their worst (peer) enemy, though -- particularly in light of the Sorting Hat's latest song, and if we believe that all the Houses have to unite in order for Voldemort to be defeated.

Does D/G resemble other ship pairings I enjoy? Dammit, it does. <g> I guess I have a "type," and I simply can't escape from it. My first OTP was Mulder/Scully, and they were all about complementing one another. They were like night and day, and yet they fit. I also enjoyed Michael/Liz for a time from Roswell, but actually, that came about through fanfic as I really liked Max/Liz until Max became a psychotic asshole. But yeah, Michael/Liz would definitely fit into my OTP mold -- in fact, shippers of that ship were called "Polarists," because they were polar opposites. Next up, Buffy/Spike. Again, total opposites. More so than Buffy/Angel, because at least Buffy and Angel were on the same side, and Angel was a good guy. Not so Spike. I have written many a treatise on dear Spike, so I will attempt to pare it down: I preferred Spike to Angel because it always seemed that he understood her. Buffy had darkness inside her, and would always have it simply because of who she was and what she had to do. And it seemed that Spike was the only one who recognized it and accepted it.

As for others, I'm not sure if the pairings are quite as clear cut in this whole "opposites attract" mold. Does Mark Darcy/Bridget Jones count? What about Anne and Gil (from Anne of Green Gables)? Or Michael and Mia (from The Princess Diaries -- the books, not the movie)? Or Georgia and Dave the Laugh (from the Angus, Thongs series)? Or Danny/Evelyn (from Pearl Harbor)? Or Rachel and Joey? Or Jack and Rose? Or Angel and Cordelia? Or Pacey and Joey? Or Cathy and Heathcliff? Or Emma and Mr. Knightley? Good lord, I could go on, but I shall stop here.

3. If you had the power to change the ending to any book, tv show, or movie that you otherwise enjoyed, which one would you choose and what would your ending be? (Explanation of why you hate the "real" ending also helpful).

Oh, this is such a difficult question! I just know that whatever I choose, I'm going to think of another one later and angst about it. Heehee. (The rest of this reply spoils for Quantum Leap and Identity, so if you want to read, you'll have to highlight the text.) Right now, I'll pick Quantum Leap (Jade doesn't agree with me about this, but she can't stop me!), and it has nothing whatsoever to do with ships. I find it completely heartbreaking that he never found his way home, that all he did for the rest of his life (or eternity? Was it ever established whether he aged?) was leap from body to body, never getting to rest, never having his final hope fulfilled. The thing is, they left the ending open like that in case they ever wanted to revisit QL again, and to allow him to return home would be to pretty much close out all the possibilities. Well, that's an external reason for ending a story; not that it's right for the story itself. Personally, I'd let poor Dr. Beckett get home. (Or I'd change the last 3 minutes of the movie Identity, which rocked up until then. I'd just make it so that it was anyone but the little kid. Gah.)

4. Who are the persons indispensible to you in HP fandom and who are the authors that you fangirl? Why?

Of course, top on my list is [livejournal.com profile] jade_okelani, who allows me to suck her into fandoms and who writes me stories on ship pairings she has no intense interest in, herself. She's my bestest friend in the whole world, and nothing would be the same without her. Then there's [livejournal.com profile] lissinthecity, who is a fabulous friend and writer; [livejournal.com profile] akscully and [livejournal.com profile] calliope14, who are new friends I adore chatting with (even if we don't squee about the same ships, but which is actually the coolest part), all thanks to [livejournal.com profile] triumvirate; and [livejournal.com profile] sydney_lynne, an unapologetic D/G shipper whose thoughts on the pairing are always well-spoken and intelligent, so I can't wait to read them (discussion about D/G is just as fun as reading about them, imho). The people I fangirl are all authors whose work I've enjoyed greatly, and squee whenever they have something new out: Jade, Liss, [livejournal.com profile] epicyclical, [livejournal.com profile] angiej, Davesmom, [livejournal.com profile] msscribe, StrangerWithMyFace, Tupper, and someone who doesn't write anymore (as far as I know), Renebre. And then I also fangirl specific stories, like "Rising from Ashes," by Arabella and Jedi Boadicea; "Dark Directed," by Fearthainn; and "Sea of Waking Dreams," by Cinnamon. (This isn't a comprehensive list by any means, but it's what came to me off the top of my head!)

5. Describe your ideal guy. Do you think he really exists?

My ideal guy: Draco, but in real life I probably would need him to be slightly less of a bastard. And he'd have to have a sense of humor, even if it's biting and sarcastic. I think I'd want qualities that anyone else would want, in reality. While in fiction I'm always drawn to dark, dangerous, exciting guys, in Real Life I'd need someone fun, dependable, and open-minded. He'd have: a similar sense of humor, a compatible outlook on life, the same priorities wrt to finances, a desire to travel and explore. I'd also need to find him attractive. Preferred, but not necessary: outdoorsy and athletic, to get me off my ass! <g> Does this person exist? I can't imagine that somewhere in this world, he doesn't. I don't think I'm asking for that much, and in fact have often found myself clicking with people who don't meet these "ideals" so nothing's set in stone. But then again, we'd have to be at the exact right place at the exact right moment to meet one another, and I'd have to be his ideal as well, and I'm not sure anymore if I can believe that that happens for everyone the way it does in the movies.

whited out text just in case anyone hasn't seen the final episode of Quantum Leap yet. *g*

You are so deluded about QL! It was the best ending, man!!

OK, it totally wasn't. When I first watched it, I actually hated it with a fiery passion. (Nearly as much as I hate the D/Hr.) I was sooooo bitter and disappointed he never got home. But then I made myself watch it a few times, and I talked to my Dad about it (QL was his favorite show ever -- if he was into fandom, he would write QL fic. Actually, he IS writing QL fic, but he calls it a "novel" and claims it'll get "published" *eg*) and it has this huge, long, rambly reason why it was the perfect ending ever, and it totally convinced me after time had worn down.

(Meanwhile, Mr. It's-The-Perfect-Ending was spitballing his "novel" idea to me, and shockingly at the end of it, Sam gets to go home after all is said and done.)

I bet you don't want this whole thing in your LJ, but haha, you're getting it anyway:

The beauty of the finale, for me, was in Sam realizing he had to right a wrong for Al; that he got to undo something that should have been undone in the first place. I think the beauty of that act makes the bitterness that Sam never got to go home a little sweeter than it would have been otherwise. (Though, iirc, QL is the series finale I cry at every. single. time. without fail, because I'm bleeding for Sam never getting to go home. It just doesn't bother me anymore, it makes me feel so much, that I'm not bitter at it. Dunno if it was time, distance, or my dad's persuasive argument, but there you have it. And damn I haven't thought about this in ages. I didn't even remember about my dad's book until he brought it up the other day. *blush*)

I haven't seen it since it ended, so I have carried this bitterness with me all the days since. :)) I mean, I adored it to pieces, and yet I hardly remember any of it. It should come out on DVD so I can be reminded!

D00d, I can't believe you didn't list me among your indispensible HP people. *g* If it wasn't for my offhandedly telling you about the LoTR diaries, you wouldn't be the freakish HP fangirl you are today, now, would you?

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck. How could I have forgotten that? It's the excuse I use every time you dog me about HP! Of course, when it comes to HP I think of you running far and wide so of course I wouldn't have thought of you as an "indispensible" HP person. Hahahahaha. And don't think I don't know that you're just trying to give me a hard time, bitch.

Wow, check out that crazy IP address. Normally I don't even notice, but that's the first time I've seen it like that! Okay, here are your questions:

1. Do you prefer writing prose or poetry? Why?

2. What's the one thing you've always wanted to do in life, but haven't up until now? What's stopped you?

3. What's your OTP in HP fandom? How did it come about? Do you have one? Should people even have OTPs?

4. What's your favorite way of expressing yourself?

5. What's a fic pairing you've always kind of wanted to read, but haven't? What about one you've wanted to write?

Sometimes I like to wind you up just to watch you go.

Okay, your questions:

1. If you could live anywhere and do anything, where would you live and what would you do?

2. How did you get into the HP fandom, and what made you decide on your OTP(s)? Do you think having an OTP is so, like, two years ago?

3. Which is your favorite HP book? What's your honest opinion about where JKR is going with the ships? (These two aren't really related, but it's my way of getting more questions in. Ha!)

4. What's your favorite movie genre and what's your favorite film from it? (Oh yeah, I ask the difficult questions.)

5. What's the funniest story you have from your days of teaching? What's the saddest?

(6. Since you don't like D/G, what in the world possessed you to friend me in the first place?!)

#6 is a bonus. :D

Hee, good answers. I wanted to know about the NW b/c I was thinking of getting a job there someday (if only temporarily) and people are always raving about it, but then they're from there and therefore biased. I mean, people told me how great Boston is before I moved here, and I don't really agree with them, although perhaps like you it's because I don't like my "job" and would a million times rather be in SoCal. :P

And ITA with you about D/G v. D/Hr and thoughts on CC's stories, I think I probably could have written the same thoughts as you! I too thought D/Hr was kind of cute when I first read DD, but now in DV I hate them with the fiery passion of a thousand suns (have written so many posts about it on Cassie's boards and mailing lists whinging about how wrong it is and how it reminds me of my t00bily most loathed couple of all time, Guinevere and Lancelot) and it's bled over to their whole ship in general. *More agreeing follows* and I also just can't see Hermione ending up with anyone but Harry or Ron (or both! *g*), (I mean, they're right there) which makes D/G more real to me.

I preferred Spike to Angel because it always seemed that he understood her. Buffy had darkness inside her, and would always have it simply because of who she was and what she had to do. And it seemed that Spike was the only one who recognized it and accepted it.
Oooh, also my favorite argument in favor of B/S. Eeee! I love that he gets her and accepts her for what she is, even and especially all the ugly parts. I'm also constantly trying to convince [livejournal.com profile] irinaauthor that her Draco needs to get a fair shot with her Ginny because they are in this exact situation (very pre-Smashed kind of UST going on). But I don't think she's going to listen to me cuz the giant hordes of H/G shippers who read her would probably go bonkers on her. :(

And of course we have almost identical tastes in fangirling, which we both knew already, although I also fangirl [livejournal.com profile] siriologist and you. *bats eyes*

From: [identity profile] sarea-okelani.livejournal.com
Gah, but I don't want to put you off the NW if you're thinking of moving here! I mean, actually it would rock if you moved here while I was still here, because then we could meet. :D But no, no matter how beautiful it is here, it will never compare to my hometown (LA) or DC, which is my alternate hometown. But see, lots of people don't like those places, so I'm also biased because of my own experiences. But hey, if you love SoCal then maybe that's a good enough basis for comparison. (Also, I neglected to answer the second part of your first question, so I've edited it. Hee.)

It's freaky how alike we think wrt D/G. You're like, my evil twin. Actually, I'm probably your evil twin, as I'm quite evil.

LOL I can't believe we're also right there on B/S. Although I meant to say that I actually love Angel. And I think AtS rocks (it was my favorite show last season, despite it getting kind of crazy). I just don't like to see Angel and Buffy together. Well, actually, it's not that I don't like to see them together; I have no such strong feelings about them. They just .

Haha, good luck with convincing Irina! I haven't read her stories because I know they're H/G focused, but I'm sure I'll get around to it someday. Sometimes, UST is enough, particularly when there's good writing. But d00d, yeah, I don't know her at all, but from what I know of her story and her preferences (not much, but enough), there's no way it will be D/G. If I go in, I'm going in knowing it's going to end H/G. (Sorta like RfA, which totally breaks my heart.) Plus, if you're going to compare it to B/S pre-Smashed, that might be an argument for it not to happen, as I think B/S totally fell apart when they actually consummated their relationship. Of course, that was also because Mutant Enemy never meant for it to succeed (as they are big t00by B/A shippers), so maybe in the right hands ... but nah, I won't hold my breath. <g>

*Reads edited post* Hee. I ♥ British accents as well.

Alas, I don't think I'll be moving anytime soon to the NW or anywhere else unless I transfer or drop out of school (my secret fantasies), but I've never been there and am just curious about culture.

And I don't actively dislike B/A either, but the whole "woe is us, I love you, you love me, but we can't be together" just doesn't really do it for me because there's no inherent emotional conflict since Angelus apparently is considered completely separately from Angel. Whereas B/S have this more "adult, complicated, messy RS" (according to Jane Espenson, I think) and that complex battle between love and hate and friendship and lust just makes it sharper and more interesting to me. Plus the whole he gets her and she doesn't have to hide who she really is in front of him thing. ;)

Re: UST, it just tends to drive me nuts and have me tearing my hair out, and you never know if it could work unless something happens there , which is why Irina's story drives me batty with that unexplored potential, but no, I'm not really holding my breath for it to happen. The most killer UST for me right now is Anise's JOTH (I cannot believe I forgot to mention that I totally fangirl her, since it's my opinion that she is writing the D/G bible), but at least there you just know from the way the story is structured that something is bound to happen eventually between Draco and Ginny, even though right now the UST really cannot be any more intense and is driving me mad.

You should ask me five questions too, just to see if we're any more freakishly alike. Or if we, gasp!, have different opinions on certain issues.

So you have secret fantasies of dropping out of school (how soon till you're done?) and I have not-so-secret fantasies of quitting my job (if only I weren't a single-income household!). Nice.

ITA re: B/A and B/S. The B/A angst is completely contrived, whereas the B/S sprung up out of seemingly nowhere, these two characters who clicked when they weren't supposed to click. The episode that B/A shippers quote all the time (I'm not a long-time fan of BtVS, so the episode titles don't come as easily) where Spike says that big whole thing about how they'll love, and they'll shag, but they'll never be friends? I love that ep, too, but not because of that -- it's because, that one comment from him aside, there is ZERO tension there between Buffy and Angel. It's Buffy and Spike who bicker and taunt and eat up the screen when they're together. Angel's just sort of hovering in the background. Whether ME intended it or not, Spike and Buffy had this edge, this "watch us or you'll regret it" kind of power, and Buffy herself says that Spike sees what no one else sees. Whereas the angst between Buffy and Angel is largely manufactured, imho.

I'm a total Anise fangirl as well! But I think the reason I forgot to mention her (you have no excuse, shame on you! :D) is because I haven't started Jewel of the Harem yet. I'm already far too into the DT as it is, and it's driving me nuts; I can't be into another huge WIP like that -- and I have zero doubt that I would be, if I were to start JotH. However, I keep up with chapter updates and have the whole file on my hard drive. My grand t00by plan is to paste it into a blank journal, and then when it's done, read the whole thing like a book. I can't wait. But I understand that she's barely even halfway through. *weeps* Every time I feel myself caving, like I want to start it, I go to ff.net and Portkey and drown myself in fic until the urge passes. Anyway, I ♥ Anise; she's a great feedbacker and overall nice person. All fandom people should be like her!

Oooh, yay, I get you ask you questions as well. Let's see ...

1. Why aren't you happy living in Boston? What do you plan to do with your degree once you've completed school? (If you don't mind saying, where do you go to school? Trying to think of Boston-area schools ... Harvard? BU? BC? I've been to Boston once in my life and liked it. We went to Little Italy and this crazy bakery where you had to pummel 50 people just to get to the front to order.)

2. If you could pick three HP fanfic and turn them into films, which would you choose? Which are not only compelling story-wise, but have cinematic qualities and would make a good film? Who would you cast?

3. What are some of your (non-fandom-related) favorite novels?

4. Which is your favorite HP book and why?

5. How do you feel about having an OTP vs. not having one? Are people who have OTPs not as open-minded as those who don't, or are those who don't missing out because they don't know the joys of a concentrated interest? Have there been stories you've enjoyed outside your OTP? Which?

*laughs* I think my fantasy of quitting school is not really a huge secret (okay, the people at my school don't know, or my parents) from my closest friends at least, who totally understand because they too wish to drop out of grad school. ;)

Hee. It always amuse me to read about how utterly unintentional the B/S ship came to be. From "Buffy was really intended to end up with Xander" to using Something Blue to show how silly the idea of B/S is compared to Buffy/Riley and then wind up having B/S's chemistry blowing B/R out of the water. You just can't fight the chemistry between those two. ;) I really have a need of watching more of the episodes on dvd because I've only gotten really into Buffy recently (and alas they have to end the show just when I'm all interested).

I don't know where my brain went when I forgot to fangirl Anise, I shall have to write her a long review to make up for this, which is no small task, since OotP kind of sucked all the HP love out of me and I've been very lax at reviewing *hides under rock* and writing one-liners. :P She and CC are the only two authors I read regularly that can overpower you with the sheer beauty of their words, without regard to any other plot or character or r/s developments. But if you're planning just download all her chapters in text you'd miss all the pretty fanart!

All right. I need to ruminate over your questions now.

Oh, never fear. I do not miss any of the fab fanart, as I have access to the Yahoogroup where she lives and can see all the fanart from there. See, my arse is covered!

Something Blue! Oh, one of my very favoritest eps ever. Heck, everyone likes that ep, because as far as I know there are only about 4 Buffy/Riley fans. I started watching BtVS regularly in S5, how interesting that you've only just now gotten into it. Ohhh, for the yumminess of S2 Spike. DVDs are our friends.
