the first 2 minutes of Gracepoint
Feb. 3rd, 2015 09:40 amI tried to watch the first episode of Gracepoint last night, but it kept glitching out after like 2 minutes, so I only saw the very opening. I can already see why people find it weird and/or not as compelling as Broadchurch.
The stylization they've used for the show makes it look more like something you'd find on the CW. It should be a lot grittier, more muted, in keeping with the show's plotline.
Then there's the fact that, so far, shot for shot, it's pretty much EXACTLY the same as Broadchurch, which is weird. Because... then WHY REMAKE IT. I read somewhere that one of the producers said that Broadchurch did it so well, why would they want to change it? In which case... WHY REMAKE IT. The showrunner said something about how they felt there wouldn't be much of an audience for the original, whereas a remake as the potential to be something really big. To which I say, except there is NO precedence for that, that I can think of off the top of my head.
It's not only ridiculous to "Americanize" something that is ALREADY IN ENGLISH (see Sorcerer's Stone, Harry Potter), but it's insulting to American audiences ("you guys can't appreciate things that are even slightly different from you")... which, okay, might be valid for the majority of the country. But guess the fuck what? The majority of the country wouldn't appreciate something like Broadchurch anyway! So of course Gracepoint wasn't successful (it wasn't renewed for a second season). It shouldn't have existed in the first place.
So yeah... that's my reaction after having seen the first 2 minutes. :)) I guess I am predisposed to not like it, because even before having seen Broadchurch I was opposed even in theory to an American remake, but I do want to give Gracepoint a shot because I really like Michael Pena, I would like to see Anna Gunn outside of Breaking Bad, and of course, I am kind of curious to see what plot points they're going to change, just from a story perspective. (Because I was not particularly enamored of the ending/reveal of Broadchurch, I am actually fairly open to the idea of a different ending.)
Ahem. If you have seen Gracepoint, please no spoilers. As in, don't tell me what's different from Broadchurch. But feel free to be as spoilery as you want about Broadchurch. :))
