RotK thoughts and other things

By character, as is easiest way to tackle this:
Gollum: I feel kind of sorry for the actor who played Gollum in human form, because he fit the role so well. Did he used to be a Hobbit? Was that what he was? And I thought his odd speech was due to having gone insane because of the Ring, but apparently this is not so. Also, was kind of hoping that he would redeem himself by the end, but oh well. I don't feel all that sorry for him. (Have now read in Jade's LJ that the actor is actually the voice. So how come it looked like the voice was transposed over the actor? And also, feel kind of bad for what I said re: the actor fitting the human role so well. At least he had nice hands, unlike Frodo. That's something, right?) Final judgment:
Legolas: Still my fave character, and he's only a supporting one, so he's not in it enough for me. He had many hot moments, of which I was very appreciative. The elephant thing alone is worth going again to see it. (Though I thought some of the special effects -- like the elephant and the Hobbits next to Big People -- were better done in the previous two.) Wish we could have seen what became of him later. In the books, I think he sails off somewhere w/ Gimli? Final judgment:
Gimli: I'm never very interested in him, but he has possibly my favorite line from the whole of RotK. Something about ... great danger, small chance of survival, what are we waiting for? Final judgment:
Aragorn: I'm not an Aragorn girl, but I enjoyed him here. In fact, I generally like him, I just don't like him. And I don't really find him attractive. But he did have a hot moment -- when he leapt off the ship. And go him for telling the Hobbits they bow to no one. *tear* And I loved his reaction to seeing Arwen again. I was never into their love story very much, but RotK was the closest they came to making me feel something more than indifference. Final judgment:
Arwen: I was a little disappointed by the fact that, though we get to see her as a warrior/fighter in her own right in FotR, she didn't end up doing anything but being the dying girl in this movie. I know they're hampered by the fact that they really ramped up the role for Liv in the first place, that this is the role she has in the book. But still, given that in the movies this is what I'd come to anticipate, it was somewhat disappointing. I really liked the sequence where she sees her son. Final judgment:
Gandalf: Heehee, love the Gandalf. The part where he beats up Denethor, w00t! Though for a wizard, he doesn't seem all that powerful. Or maybe it's that I don't think he uses his powers enough, because, like, do your mojo and wipe a bunch of the enemy out! Honestly. Final judgment:
Eomer: Oooh, he's so commanding and pretty. Loved when he and Legolas stood next to each other. Will have to make into an icon someday. Final judgment:
Eowyn: What can I say, even though I was done w/ her crush on Aragorn, I knew she would redeem herself in battle. And apparently in the books she ends up with Faramir, which is just too cute. Final judgment:
Faramir: OMG <333333 Faramir. I kind of wish that he would have just gotten in there and kicked some ass in the final battles, injured or no. They changed a bunch of other little things, why not this? He just seemed not to have a lot to do, and I wish he could have proven himself even more. Final judgment:

Frodo: So. done. with Frodo. Especially after he dissed Sam. And then wouldn't let go of the Ring. And if the Ring was such a burden, and he was so sensitive to it, how could he have possibly not noticed it was gone? And at the end, WHY is he going off w/ the elves? In the books, it makes sense -- he's dying. But the movie, they say that 4 years has passed, Frodo seems healthy, etc. Don't see why he should go off, other than to make poor Sam cry. Final judgment:
Sam: <33333 Sam. He's loyal, he's martyred, he has reserves of strength. He's the only reason Frodo made it that far. I'm glad he got to be happy w/ Rose Cotton (how cute was their little family?), but really, he and Frodo should have just stayed together forever in their t00by Hobbit love. Final judgment:
Pippin: If he had died from touching the palantir, it would have been up there w/ Jason Lee's death in Dreamcatcher and the dad's death in 28 Days Later for "Stupidest Death Ever." I like Pippin and Merry together, but Pippin alone, not as much. But I give him points for trying to save Faramir. Final judgment:
Merry: Like Merry more than Pippin. Glad he got to go into battle to try and save his buds. Plus, he seems to have his head on his shoulders, unlike some Hobbits. Final judgment:
Theoden: Finally redeemed himself by answering "Gondor's" call for help. He's been on my list ever since he caused the Titanic to plow into an iceberg, just for a little glory. Oh wait, wrong movie. Final judgment:
Denethor: Hate him. Glad he burned alive then fell off a cliff. Final judgment:
The ghost mountain dudes: Wow, how cool (and scary) were they? Though who thought it was stupid that all the living people kept trying to fight? Why didn't they just let the ghost dudes go in and do all the work, with zero casualty? They can't be killed. Hello. And I bet they were so wishing they had the ghost dudes when they were at the Black Gate. Foresight, Aragorn, foresight. That's what a true king has, you dope. Heehee. Final judgment:
Sauron: This was possibly the most unbelievable part of LotR (other than the Ring itself, which doesn't actually seem to do anything but make people go crazy). Oh yeah, big scary eye in the sky. Has no one ever thought of sending in a bunch of eagles to Mordor and poking Sauron with a giant stick? This is why I should have led the armies of Middle Earth. Final judgment:
Elrond: Basically useless to me. Lied to his daughter, didn't rally Elven troops to help save world. No wonder Neo kicked your ass in the end. Final judgment:
Saruman: Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Love how he and Wormtail were just DONE. WhiteWizzy's been contained by the trees in his yard, oh yes he has. Final judgment:
Other random things:
- Saw the movie @ the Cinerama, which has a gigantic screen and is the best place to see movies. Yes, the line was around the block, but we got good seats anyway (mostly because my friends got there early). There were frightening people dressed up as the characters. There was an "Aragorn" who was being introduced to some girl, and he told her that his wig wasn't his real hair, as if trying to assure her. I was like, Dude, that is the least of your problems.
- This was probably my favorite of the three. I'm still hanging on to TTT, which I have a great fondness for, as it brought me into the LotR fold, finally.
- NO ONE DIED???????? I mean, okay, it's not like I wanted any of them to die, but I think it would have been "appropriate" and really cemented it for me, because it would have been realistic. And inject some tragedy so that the survivors have more perspective. The people I would have killed, despite my personal preferences: Eowyn, Faramir (during the suicide run), Frodo, Gimli, Eomer, Pippin. Not all of them, but at least one. Come on.
- Yes, I cried. Lasted the whole movie until Aragorn got crowned, and then cried w/ the aforementioned Hobbit respect. Waaaah.
- Why'd the elves go away? They're still immortal and shit, aren't they?
- Looooooved the fires being lit as a call signal from Gondor to Rohan. Made my chest go all tight. Yay for humanity!
- That giant spider was not fun. So big and gross and scary. Wish Sam had ripped its guts open. But like, that light thing that Frodo had ... apparently it scares the spider? Why? How?
- Okay, what was the deal with the eagles? I mean, I'm glad they swooped in and took care of those giant flying lizard things (you can tell I'm an avid fan of LotR, can't you?), as I was thinking that it was too bad the good guys didn't have any allies in the air ... but WTF? Where did they come from? Did they even give us ONE hint that they were waiting for eagles? Or that eagles could be recruited? Or that they were strong enough to take on the giant flying lizard things? A little set-up here would have been nice (unless I missed it, in which case, bad on me).
- OMG every time they showed the volcano at Mordor it seemed ten billion miles away. I was like, OMG this is like the Shire all over again. (See, I'm reading FotR, and I'm on page 120, and they're STILL IN THE SHIRE.)
- The end dragged a bit. I know they even cut out some kind of battle in Hobbitland because Saruman enslaved them or something, but even then -- too long. Too long for it not to have contained any Legolas whatsoever. <g> Plus, it was so clear that they were all in love with each other. *slaps self* Okay, I'm always the one going on about how there doesn't seem to exist love w/o a romantic aspect anymore, but -- really. Sam/Frodo especially. So gay.
Okay, whew, that's all. Unless there's more later. Am now going to go read all your guys's opinions.
Update on the Christmas fic: The good news is, it's nearly done and will be posted in time for Christmas. The bad news is, not in time for any of the cards I'm sending out to the few addresses I have, which will probably end up being fine given that I seem to be incapable of writing ficlets (unless you only give me an hour) and it's about 19 pages long right now.
In LJ news, did you know that they've done away with invite codes, and now you can trade in your invite codes for cash? True story.
Edited to Add: (I can't just put "ETA" like all you guys, because I use that all the time at work and to me it means "Estimated Time of Arrival." P.S. I think I remember you saying you have LP tickets, and I hope you have a blast. My brother, my best mate and I went to see them in November and it was incredable. I just hope you don't fall into the trap we fell into - contemplating following them for the rest of the tour.
