What is it with women named Clare/Claire who get to be in fabulous time-travel love epics? I finished The Time-Traveler's Wife the other night. When I was done, I kind of sat there, then I lay down on the bed and turned off the lights. And then I cried and cried! I couldn't decide whether the reaction from the story having been so beautiful, or so sad. I definitely wish this was one we'd read at [livejournal.com profile] literocracy, because I have so much to say/ask ... it's one of those books that beg for a good discussion. I highly recommend this one.

I've been listening to a lot of Natalie Merchant lately. In the past I was never a big fan of her voice, but for some reason lately her music's really doing it for me.

Tomorrow I have a massage appt (thank gawd), and since I'm going to be in the area where there's actually a 99 Ranch Market, I think I'm going to splurge and get a crab for dinner. Without actually going to the seaside, Asian markets are the only places I know where you can actually get live seafood. Anyway, I think we all remember the trauma of the last time I got crab, so this time I'm going to cook it the way the folks at the outdoor fish market tell you to cook it (though I never buy there because it's too expensive -- edit: just called 99 Ranch and their live Dungeness crab is $2.99/lb ... I am SO there). They say that you just need to get a pot of water, fill it with salt, then put the crab in. When you turn on the heat, all the salt and the warmth will make the crab go to sleep. And then ... it's cooked. (Don't you just love my puns?) I have no idea if this is true, or whether they're just lying in order to make us feel better. Because I had always heard that it was less cruel to boil the water first, then drop the crab in so that the deed is instantaneous. *wibble*

Instead of bagels we had Krispy Kreme donuts this morning. It was one of the hardest things ever to ignore the boxes and boxes of delicious chewy sweetness five feet away from me, but I persevered.

Question for you video gamers out there: As I understand it, there's a Prince of Persia game, and there's PoP2, and then PoP: The Sands of Time. Which one's the best? The one I just ordered was PoP:TSoT, but the Xbox version also comes with PoP2. The PS2 version comes with the original PoP. So I'm wondering whether I'm getting 'gypped' w/ PoP2. <g> (I got Burnout 2 in the mail yesterday ... omg it's the best driving game ever, where you basically do everything you're not supposed to do while driving. My favorite is crash mode, where you get medals based on how spectacular the wrecks you cause are.)

Here's a link to my weekly drabble: Like Mother, Like Daughter. It's a companion piece to Her Secrets, which you may or may not remember. Many thanks to all the lovelies who have left such nice comments. Ginny does have a lot to explain for, doesn't she? I think she has good reasons. ;)

The original Prince of Persia was made in the early 90s (originally for PC, ported to SNES, I had it before it was stolen). I'm not sure what PoP2 is, but I'm guessing it is also a relatively old game, being a sequel to the original. Sands of Time is the modernized "remake".

It's been something of a trend lately to include old titles with new games.

Burnout 3 came out a week ago. I hope you got 2 for cheap.

Well if that's the case, I guess I'm glad to get the newer old game than the old old game.

I got Burnout 2 for $8.99 + overpriced shipping, so overall it was about $15.

That's right. Prince of Persia 1 was a superb PC game that is considered a landmark in videogame history (you can learn more here) if you are interested). But you shouldn't worry: the X-box version of Sands of Time has both PoP1 and 2 ;) You can play 1 after you finish the main game and you can unlock 2 by finding a secret door in one of the levels of the main game.

And I've always been in love with Natalie Merchant's voice. I actually liked her more when she was part of 10,000 Maniacs, but I am still fond of her job. I just miss the upbeat, happy songs with simple lyrics that she used to write every now and then (instead of the dull ballads or folk songs that dominate her current work).

Really?? The article I read only said that Xbox came with PoP2, and PS2 came with PoP1. W00t if it's true!

See, in the past, I totally liked NM more when she was w/ 10,000 Maniacs. Only recently have I come to appreciate her more current work, which is weird because I generally like folk music (like Sarah McLachlan).

My roommate has an Xbox and he finished Sands of Time this weekend, so I can confirm that the Xbox version has PoP1 and PoP2 included, while my PS2 version only has PoP1 :( The Xbox version also has a few neat little extras: character design sketches and a self congratulatory mini-documentary about the making of the game.

In my experience Natalie Merchant's best songs are those that grow on you. I didn't care much for, say, "Seven Years" in her Tigerlily album, but after several listens I can't believe I hadn't given much thought to it before. Most of her songs are like that... I still like her 10K phase better, though ;)

Confession: I haven't heard Natalie's latest album. It being a quasi-independent folk music album, my chances of finding it at an accessible price in a music store down here is almost zero.

Wheeeeee! PoP and The Sims arrived in my mailbox today, so I know what I'll be doing tonight. I have sworn not to start PoP until Jade gets back from Hawaii so that we can play together (our plan is that if we play together, we may be able to help each other out of tight spots rather than consulting a walkthrough), so I'm Simming it tonight. :D

OMG, "Seven Years" is such a good example, because I had the same experience -- I was eh about it, and then the more I listened to it, the more I <3 it.

Which one is her latest album? The House Carpenter's Daughter (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000CH9BH/qid=1095724200/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/102-4147207-3356958?v=glance&s=music)? I haven't heard it either. My NM love is brand new. I still have to get "Motherland."

Yup. Since it is "pure" folk I'm not sure how much I'd like it, but I'm willing to give it a try.

Have fun with the Sims! I lended my copy of the game when it became clear that it was sucking all my free time away while I was in the middle of that bothersome thing known as "college" - the fact that I never saw that disc again is the reason why I still have some money left in my account, since it saved me from giving in to the temptation of buying every single expasion pack out there... =P
