I bought a live crab today, and slaughtered it according to my mother's tried and true way of steaming crab. Unfortunately, the fact that it was supposed to die after I peeled back the head/shell escaped the crab, who flailed around traumatizing me for several minutes while I pondered how I could possibly kill it when opening its head didn't work.

It just figures that I would get Indestructible!Crab the first time I ever attempted anything like this.

Eep, that would be traumatizing for me too. My mom had to stop boiling them at home because she couldn't stomach the noise they made when dropped into boiling water. What a way to go...

They make a noise? Oh God...

[identity profile] annibug.livejournal.com 2004-05-23 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I was very young the last time my mom boiled crabs at home so I don't remember it but she once described it as a cross between a pathetic scream and a hiss.

Add to that the sound of them trying to claw their way out of whatever holding container you have them in and it could almost be something right out of Silence of the Lambs.

There's something to give you bad dreams at night. ;)

That's the only thing holding me back from cooking seafood other than shrimp at home. For starters, no way could I throw something alive into a pot of boiling water, but beheading them, never. Kudos to you though for attempting it! :)

OMG.
For some reason, this mental image just gives me the giggles.
I don't think that I could kill something and then eat it either (although I LOVE eating seafood that has been pre-killed for me).

HeeHee...well, how did he taste?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

No words.

[identity profile] talathmeril.livejournal.com 2004-05-23 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
I've never done it, but I've got family in Florida and they say you put it in the pot while the water is still cool then bring it to a boil and you don't get that.

Like a few others...the image gives me the giggles.

HOWEVER, I too would be trauamtized so the giggles quickly ended as I thought of what it would be like if crab flailed about like that after the head peeling back thing. *shudders*

[identity profile] corianderstem.livejournal.com 2004-05-23 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Aieee! How traumatic! I would have cried. Or maybe run around like a totally spaz, flapping my arms and squealng. It's difficult to say. *g*

See, when you told me in IM, I was all traumatized on your behalf. However, people are laughing at you here because this:

while I pondered how I could possibly kill it when opening its head didn't work.

Is the funniest shit ever.

It's possible I'm still tired from waking up TWO AND A HALF HOURS AGO.

[identity profile] seldon.livejournal.com 2004-05-25 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
And I'm laughing my head off because of your icon! :D

[identity profile] seldon.livejournal.com 2004-05-25 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
But you didn't told us how the story ends - did you get to eat him in revenge? Or was his death for naught?

[identity profile] sarea-okelani.livejournal.com 2004-05-25 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I ate him, all right. Once he resembled cooked crab it wasn't that difficult. But to this day I still think of those moments when he was half dead and I SHUDDER.

[identity profile] seldon.livejournal.com 2004-05-25 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
And people ask me why I don't eat seafood :P
