Backdating this entry, because I can't believe I haven't posted about this yet!
I have two new kittens! I got them on Aug. 28 -- at which point I was told they were 7.5 weeks old. The people I got them from didn't know if they were male or female, because they weren't professional breeders (so in fact, I don't know that they are actually purebred, which is sort of fine because maybe this means they will be more hearty in their constitution). This was a little annoying, because I really wanted males -- I've read that male cats are just sweeter in disposition and more into people, and since Jaime is exactly that, I tended to believe it -- but I also had heard that as long as you have them spayed, females can be just as nice. So it didn't really matter, except I still leaned toward males. We all did a bunch of Googling and peering at kitty private parts, but it was just super hard to tell. >< I prepared two girls' names and two boys' names, just in case.
I found out a couple of days later, at their first vet visit, that they are indeed brothers! (Yes they're from the same litter.)
Meet Micah and Henry (aka Hyunsoo)!
I had wanted a Scottish Fold cat, and had been looking on Craigslist and such for a week or so. I wanted a companion for Jaime. However, in my research, I found out that shelters don't adopt out young kittens in singles; if people wanted a kitten, they had to take at least two. This is because of kittens learning good cat behavior from each other, like how hard to bite or scratch or whatever.
Anyway, I got in touch with these people who had some cute Scottish Fold kittens, andadelagia came with me to get them (just in case they were actually serial killers). They were a really nice Russian couple, but they had this demon child who was super rough with the kittens and we witnessed him nearly kill one of the kittens when he was having a tantrum and opened the garage door too roughly. O.o They had two long-haired kittens and two short-haired ones, and the long-haired ones were soooooooo cute. But I knew that I would probably not find them as cute as they got older, and then I'd also have a long-haired cat to take care of. Plus they were straight-eared, while the short-haired kittens were both folded ears (which meant they were more expensive, too). I had initially wanted a straight-eared Scottish Fold (basically, a British Shorthair, I now realize), but since the short-haired kittens were Folds, oh well. That was more important to me. I ended up paying $500 per kitten, which was expensive but a lot less than my financial advisor Amy paid for her British Shorthairs ($1800 per kitten!). They put the kittens into a shipping box and folded the top so that it wouldn't pop open. However, when we got back to my house we found one of the kittens had somehow found its way out and was just calmly sitting on top of the box, staring at us! LOL! Also O.o. I can't be 100% sure now, but knowing their personalities, I'd bet it was Micah.
Initially, Jaime seemed to really hate them, and it was stressing me out, because I had gotten them FOR him! He used to sleep with me every night, but for about five days after the kittens arrived, he was so wary of them that he did not sleep with me, due to them being on the bed. But thankfully he's now gotten more used to them (I'm writing this on Sept 9), so he's gotten a bit back to his normal self.
As for me, I love them, but I also sort of regret getting them. They are SO MUCH WORK, both for me and my mom, and she's going to have to take care of them when I'm on my extended trips for both work and leisure. :/ I used to be able to clean the litter box once a week, but now I'm cleaning it like every day. Also, the kittens don't seem to ever go of their own accord to the litter box. I'm afraid of them having an accident or having to hold it, so every morning and night I lead them to the litter box, which they use at that point. I don't know if I really need to do this, because maybe they will just go when they need to, but right now I'm doing it just in case. I would really like to be able to trust them to take care of their own business, though!!
Also, when they're together, I can easily tell them apart. But when there's only one of them, I CAN'T TELL AT ALL. I keep calling them by the other's name. :/ They're never gonna learn their names at this rate!
All they do all day is play fight with each other, so on the one hand, I'm really glad I did get them both. On the other hand, I suddenly have three cats and I don't know how this happened??? Anyway, they are totally codependent and go everywhere together. This is entirely selfish of me to say, but I bet they'll never love me as much as Jaime loves me, because they'll always have each other! Whereas Jaime only has me, lol. <3
On the first night I had them, they were playing on the landing on the second floor, and Hyunsoo fell through the bars to the first floor!! I seriously thought he was dead. He seemed a bit shaken, but otherwise okay (I mentioned it to the vet, but she didn't find anything wrong with him, thank goodness). I was so worried! He's the littler one. He takes FOREVER to eat his food, whereas Micah is a speed demon. It's no wonder he's so much bigger. He wolfs down his own food, then starts in on Hyunsoo's. Now we have to hold Micah as soon as he's done so that Hyunsoo can finish his food.
They're soooooo cute, but such a handful. I know part of it was a reaction to losing Talis, and maybe I should have given it more time before introducing more pets into the household, but I really did think that Jaime had been acting oddly in Talis's absence, and that he would like other, young cats to play with. Now, even though he's mostly tolerating them, their antics are also a source of fascination for him, so at least in that sense he seems "better" because he's not just lying around with only me and my mom for company (though if he could talk, maybe he would say he preferred that!).
