Hwarang through ep 13
Sep. 15th, 2017 12:01 amI know people have issues with this show, but
jade_okelani and I are loving it, and we just finished episode 13. >.> I guess there's something wrong with us... or maybe it hasn't gotten to the point yet where it goes off a cliff? Anyway, I hope it's the former. :))))) I mean, if we're crazy, at least it's folie a deux.
- In the very first or second episode, we were like, oh I hope Dog-Bird has to pretend to be his friend's sister's brother! But how could they make that happen? And then poor Mak-moon died, and we were like, wow it could happen. But then Mak-moon's father took him in, and she sort of took care of him (albeit sight unseen -- still not sure how this worked, but who cares), and her father didn't seem to think of the idea of having him pretend to be her brother, so we were like, oh well. But then it happened! Like a gift from nowhere! HAHAHAHA.
It's good we have each other, because we are probably the only people we know who would even wish for such a thing. :))))) I was reading some DB recaps of the show, and the recapper says something like, I hope Aro finds out sooner rather than later that he's not really her brother, before this starts getting into icky territory.
I watched an episode of "Irish People Try..." recently where they were trying American fast food or something, and one of the Irish guys exclaims, "Wow, a double(-patty) burger! I've never had that before!" A YouTube comment in response said: "Americans: *sweats nervously* Yeah, me either." Which Jade and I found hilaaaaaaaaaaarious. I share this anecdote with you now because that was pretty much my response to the DB recapper. :)))))))
- I'm really, really glad I watched all three leads in something else before watching this show, because I think that makes me like them all better. Go Ara especially. Park Seo-joon, I might've liked anyway, because there's something about him that's very appealing. Park Hyungsik, I might have liked or I might not have liked. It's weird because obviously I found him really attractive in Strong Woman Do Bong Soon. But guys in period getup just aren't my thing, and on top of that, his character is so rapey! I mean, it's toned down a lot now, but there were a couple of eps there where we were seriously like -- dude, she SAID NO. REPEATEDLY. Stop manhandling her and being obnoxious about it when she has a clear lack of interest!
It's funny because you could say the same thing happens in 1988 with Sunwoo/Bora, and Jade and I were okay with that one because Bora was such a hardass, that's pretty much the only way we could even see a guy wooing her. But
adelagia was really bothered by that storyline, so I can't imagine why she liked in Hyungsik from this show! EXPLAIN YOURSELF. :))))
- I loooooooooooove Suho. Minho is playing him so well. <3 The whole thing with his sister is so funny and adorable. I might have to make a gif of him putting her in a headlock.
Yes, I had to do it. It's a bit choppy because the conversion to MP4 from FLV did something to the file, and I'm too lazy to re-do it with another setting. OMG how this made me laugh.

- I feel like they aren't milking the bromance part of the show enough, with Suho and Banryu and all that. I could do with less of the Queen/Aro's dad stuff, and definitely less of Princess Sookmyung, who I somehow hate more than even her mother.
- What in the world is this random narcolepsy that Dog-Bird is afflicted with? It seems to come on totally randomly.
- Also, is he like, the true heir to the throne or something? Like, is he Jon Snow and Sammaekjong is Dany? I just don't know why the dude with polio, who was apparently removed from the royal line of succession, would be so interested in him. And yet if he were Dog-Bird's father, surely he would show more interest in his son's life? Meaning, he wouldn't have let him live for years as a nobody commoner? I mean, being a commoner in those days was no easy thing! It could mean life or death! Of course, with this queen in power, any threat to her son's throne is a death sentence, so maybe that's what the guy wants to save Dog-Bird from.
- I mean, okay, the last couple of eps haven't been as enjoyable as the first 10, because this show is best when it's a comedy and now the drama has really ramped up... but I don't think this is why people have complaints?
- One thing that really bothers me is that Dog-Bird was shown to be a pretty good fighter/swordsman in the beginning; that was one of his outstanding characteristics. He was always saving Mak-moon, and his enemies seemed to fear his prowess with a weapon. However, once he joined Hwarang his prowess seemed to be a thing of the past? Sure, he's better than the other guys there, but they're like all pretty boys from elite houses, who have likely never held a sword in their lives? Pretty low bar. When he was fighting the guard during the "to the death" sparring session, I don't care that he was injured, he wasn't fighting like someone who was particularly good at it? Or if he was, they did a pretty poor job of showing it.
