that's right, I'm using a spring icon
Sep. 16th, 2016 09:49 pmIt's been a fairly nice week, but of COURSE the clouds are rolling in and it's supposed to rain all weekend. Why do you do this to us, Seattle? Why?
My September Ipsy and Birchbox hauls have arrived.
Here's Birchbox, descriptions of the items are here:

I'm pretty annoyed with the inclusion of the Milk item. Milk products were the ones where I could have chosen one of them, then gotten 4 mystery items. I thought that by getting all 5 mystery items, it would mean that I wouldn't get any of the Milk ones, because none of them appealed to me. Instead, they just picked one at random for me. If I'd known that was going to be the case, I would have selected one of them and done the 4 mystery + 1 known. Not sure if that happens every time or not, if they always include one of the "known" things in the mystery box. If that's the case, I'd rather just pick the least useless item to me of the knowns.
I'm also unimpressed with the fact that 2 of the 7 samples were crappy packets (the shampoo and conditioner).

It arrived in this eye-catching bubble mailer:

I have previously mentioned how useless this month's bag was to me, so I won't belabor the point. The nail polish was indeed a coppery gold... a rose gold, I guess. It might look nice on an iPhone, but I'm not crazy about the idea of it on my nails. When/if I try it out, I'll post it here.
The thing with Ipsy is that you get these cute little beauty bags every month as well, which, yes they're cute, but really, how many of those does one person realistically need?
Haul for the month:

I won't lie; despite the fact that I was ambivalent about both of them this month, it was still fun to get the samples and look forward to using the ones I find of use to me. :D

I mentioned that I won both of my fantasy matchups last weekend, but Monday's game hadn't been played yet so I didn't know if I would get high score of the week in my ESPN league, but I did! Seriously crazy considering I was SO far behind early on, and my TE scored a big fat 0. However, all of the rest of my lineup scored double digits, so that help me beat the second-highest scorer of the week 121.1 to 120.5. I squeaked by with 0.6 points! Ha.
I am extremely waffley about my lineups this weekend. I even consulted SB Nation's fantasy war room about my selections, and got confirmation that the way I have them is the way to go, but I dunno. He also said that he didn't like Matt Forte to some other guy, and Forte ended up getting 3 TDs last night, so.
On Yahoo I picked up Blake Bortles on the waiver wire (after giving up $2 in transaction money for Matt Ryan, who I then dropped -- the guy who picked him up after me is my opponent this week, so if Ryan performs better than Bortles it will be particularly annoying), and I'm going to play him instead of Russell Wilson. I love Russell, and as a fan I hope he does well, but it's the Rams, who seem to have the Seahawks' number, and he's hobbled, so I just can't play him.
I'm also playing Thomas Rawls instead of Doug Baldwin in my ESPN lineup. I just have no idea whotf is going to well! I mean, obviously, no one does, but it's such a crapshoot. I mean, was Theo Riddick's stellar performance last week a fluke? If so, I should move Rawls into his spot and flex ADB! Then in my Yahoo league I'm flexing LeGarrette Blount, but maybe I should be flexing Ameer Abdullah! :/
All I know is, whatever I choose, I'll probably regret it. >< Last week my Yahoo bench did ridiculously well -- 65 points, and none of them was a QB. I managed to win my matchup anyway, but I would have gotten a much better overall score if I'd played a couple of them in place of my starters. Sigh.

I've been chatting with
ropo and
lore about Jamberry nail wraps, and after checking them out I've decided that while they are nice, they are way too pricey for me, because I have so much nail polish and I've just invested in nail stamping tools, etc.
In fact, I put that to good use last night:

Did an ombre gradient of purple, pink, and blue-purple. Put on a single glitter trace coat. Topped that with Seche Vite. I chose a sketchy flower design on one of my plates, and used white stamping polish to stamp. Topped that with Seche Vite again, and viola!
After having used the stamping plates a few times now, I can say that my experience with it has been hit and miss. They're great because they enable you to put cool designs on your nails without having to be an ambidextrous artist, or to go through the process of making your own wraps (which you can do with clear polish).
BUT they can be very tricky to use. Using stamping polish, or a polish thick enough to stamp with, is really important. Otherwise you get a washed out look, and sometimes the stamp won't even pick up the polish. But even when you use the right polish, I find it difficult to not pick up stray polish onto the stamp, which then can get on your nail, which is really annoying/unworkable. And you have to work really fast, so that the polish doesn't dry and become unstampable, so you can't just sit there cleaning around the edges. Finally, if you want to use the same design for all your nails, you have to clean the plate after every couple of uses or so, otherwise the polish as worked into the design too much and you can't really pick up any kind of design at all. And it seems best to start with a fully dry plate, so even cleaning in between uses, it's a little dicey getting the full design on there.
