moving crap
Nov. 18th, 2015 11:04 amUpdate on the move: I'm going to use Jordan River instead of Can't Stop Moving. I don't feel great about this decision, but it is what it is. Basically, JR's estimate came in far below CSM, though I think JR's final cost is likely to be more than their estimate, while CSM's was likely to be less than theirs. So it'll probably even out, or at least, that JR's won't really be THAT much less than CSM.
jade_okelani, who works in the business, preferred CSM because of their stellar reviews, plus there's
adelagia's own good experience. JR's Yelp reviews are awful (particularly for the out-of-state moves; locally they seem better), but my coworker has used them twice recently and really liked them, so there's that.
I'm willing to pay more for quality, for sure, but there were two things that affected my final decision: 1) The difference in estimate was a little too significant. To be fair, I've packed a lot since CSM came to do the estimate, but their respective hourly rates are as follows: CSM packing rate: $200/hr; JR packing rate: $125/hr. CSM moving rate: $225/hr; JR moving rate: $185/hr. PLUS I get an extra work discount from JR. Maybe if you only expect to use an hour or two of each service, it doesn't much matter, but for me, it's going to take like 15 hours, so it adds up. Then 2) My mom and her superstitions. There's a Chinese calendar that she consults, which gives good dates to do various things in life. A "good" date to move is Dec. 2, while a "bad" date to move is Nov. 30. I hate superstitions, but my mom totally believes in them, so I don't want her to fret over a stupid thing like that (which she would). Plus, and this is what is so insidious about dumb superstitions, there's always that niggle in the back of my mind that says, "But what if it's TRUE? Why risk it? If you can make it Dec. 2, why not?"
I did go back to CSM to give them JR's rates to see if there was anything they could do. They said the best they could offer was a 10% discount if I paid with cash. I even would have accepted this, and their higher rates, had they had any availability on Dec. 2 or even Dec. 1... but they didn't. So JR it is. (And yes, I realize it says a lot that CSM is so booked while JR is not. Now I just have to hope that all my stuff doesn't get destroyed to teach me a lesson about going with a cheaper place and letting superstition dictate my decisions. Sigh.)
I'm still planning to pack as much as I can ahead of time, to cut down on packing costs, and will try to buy a bunch of boxes as well.
Also, really annoying, but it looks like I may not be able to close on time (was supposed to be Friday). Now looking more like next week. ARGH!!!
