The Emmys are this weekend! Totally sneaked up on me. (It's weird how a non-word, "snuck," sounds so much better than the correct word.) Full list of nominations are here.
My winners picks:
Lead Actress In A Comedy Series: Laura Linney
I'd rather see Amy Poehler win this one. She's just so great as Leslie Knope.
Lead Actor In A Comedy Series: Steve Carell
I don't really have a dog in this fight, and I like Steve Carell, and it was his last season on The Office, and everyone else seems convinced he'll win, so ok.
Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series: Julie Bowen
Given how predictable the Emmys are and how they don't like change, it'll probably be Jane Lynch. I love Jane as much as anyone, but she was barely in Glee this season. Also I still chafe at the idea that Glee is a "comedy."
Supporting Actor In A Comedy Series: Ty Burrell
It's kind of crazy that 4 of the 5 slots for this category are Modern Family actors... will they cancel each other out? Or will Ty manage to stand out? I also wouldn't mind if it went to Ed O'Neill.
Comedy Series: Modern Family
But I'd like to see Parks and Recreation take it. Still, Emmy voters are nothing if not consistent.
Lead Actress In A Drama Series: Connie Britton
I have to believe that even Emmy voters will see that Connie Britton deserves this. Especially if they want to give one to FNL, which is unlikely to win in its other categories.
Lead Actor In A Drama Series: Jon Hamm
He's never won and probably only has a decent shot at it this year because Breaking Bad/Bryan Cranston wasn't eligible. Timothy Olyphant is OK in Justified, but Mad Men would not be Mad Men without Jon Hamm, and given how much people/critics love Mad Men, he should get recognized for that.
Supporting Actress In A Drama Series: Christina Hendricks
No one's picking Christina to win this one, but I think she should. It'll probably be that woman from Justified or something.
Supporting Actor In A Drama Series: Peter Dinklage
On the very off chance that Peter doesn't claim this, it should definitely go to John Slattery. He's just fantastic on Mad Men.
Drama Series: Mad Men
If this were anything but the Emmys, the fact that this would be Mad Men's fourth win in a row might make me rethink my choice. But the fact that it's won three years in a row actually FAVORS it. Plus, the fourth season was really strong and the show is just fabulous. HOWEVER, if it doesn't win, I rather think Game of Thrones has a good shot. It's already done what no other fantasy show has done, it's got really good word of mouth, and the Emmy voters might want to seem 'hip.' But honestly I'd also be fine with Friday Night Lights. Basically, anything but Boardwalk Empire, which seems to be a favorite to win, because while it was *OK*, it did not blow me away and wasn't up to the caliber of HBO's other shows, imho.
I finished Breaking Bad S3. I know I said it wasn't as good a season as the previous two, and I stand by that. But the last two episodes almost make up for it. The season finales haven't been particularly strong, until now. Wow. WOW. Finally, a season finale that deserves to be a season finale!
JESSE. OMG JESSE. Unless they do a "psych!" at the beginning of S4, showing that Jesse did not actually kill Gale, this is so huge. Throughout their relationship, despite all his various fuck ups and being the junkie, the criminal, the low life, Jesse has maintained a core of innocence. Unlike Walt, one thing about Jesse has never been compromised: his inability to kill. OK, he was willing to go there when he wanted to take down the guys who killed Combo, but that was justified -- they were scumbags who had first used a kid as a mule then later killed that kid, on top of having killed one of Jesse's good friends. Still, he was rescued from having to do anything by Walt. Now, if Jesse has in fact killed Gale, he's in the game for the first time in a way he's never been before. Part of me mourns his lost innocence, but another part of me is excited for what's to come, and for how it came about. Jesse did it in service to his friend/father figure. He understood right away what was going on and booked it to Gale's. He did what he's never had to do before -- and did it in cold blood. AARON PAUL YOU ARE MY HERO. Seriously, this guy is so impressive. I've liked him and was impressed by him from the start, but that last scene, the look on his face... aaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!
I love Jesse and Walt's relationship. It's so complicated. But that's what makes it wonderful. Because for all that they appear to despise each other sometimes, they are also the only ones who are really there for each other. It's totally a dysfunctional father/son relationship. I mean, in many ways, Walt is actually closer to Jesse than he is to Walt Jr.
I have gotten to Parks & Recreation S3! Which means Adam Scott! He is adorbs. I don't know how he ever could have been cast as that creepy teacher in that one ep of Veronica Mars. (<-- one of the best shows ever, btw) I wasn't too crazy about P&R in S1, but it has somehow wormed its way into my heart. I don't want to ever have to choose between it and Community, because that choice would just be too hard.
