Hunger Games & dairy-less Indian food...

I am so, so close to being done with The Hunger Games. If my bus hadn't been so fast this morning, I might have been able to finish it. Yes, that's right, I actually read on the bus, which normally makes me feel completely ill. But I'm so immersed in this universe, apparently, that I can do it.
Kat/Peeta! OMG. It's so cute. I suspected from the start that Peeta's feelings for her, once he professed them on TV, were genuine (though I admit when he teamed up with the Careers my certainty flagged), but I didn't know how I felt about it. On the one hand, it seemed to me that the author was going for Kat/Gale OTP from the start, and therefore Peeta had to leave the picture somehow, probably through dying at the Games, but hopefully not through Kat killing him. On the other hand, the progression of the "romance" has now somewhat won me over, even though I just don't see how it's going to end happily. Kat still thinks they're playacting, and even if she realizes otherwise, I don't know that that would change her feelings. She obviously is very fond of Peeta, but Gale's still her guy.
The more I see of Peeta, the more I like him. He has a funny, really likable personality, and is just a genuinely good guy. I really don't want him to die. :/ The best I hoped for him was that he would be able to die a hero's death at the hand of someone else while saving Kat. But now that they've changed the rules and two people can win if they're from the same district, how can I still hope for that? Now, of course, I want them both to survive/win (especially since it's just Cato left... sadness that Thresh died). Yet if they do, how the heck is that going to work once they go back?
I'm also impressed/flummoxed by the fact that these particular Games are apparently going to end at the end of this book. I thought Kat's participation was going to be drawn out for 3 books, because I just don't know what the plotlines for the other books could possibly be once Kat wins (which I still assume she's going to do). I mean, I think it's actually a GOOD thing (and also makes sense in terms of her getting to see Gale again, which I was rambling about yesterday); I'm just utterly in the dark about what could actually happen in book 2 and 3. I suppose the whole toppling the Games/free the Distrcts thing I assume will happen, but how is that going to happen once Kat and/or Peeta are ensconced back in District 12? Is it possible that the other 2 books will have different narrators, that it's not Kat as the heroine in every book? That seems unlikely but possible, I suppose.
I also thought it was kind of weak that they changed the rules partway to let 2 winners win. I know that can be chalked up to good 'strategy' by Haymitch and Peeta or whatever, but it still seems really lame. It gives/gave the districts that still had 2 contestants alive a HUGE advantage over the others, especially at that point in the game when it was true of only 2 districts. Being able to work with someone is an enormous advantage. In fact, that's kind of why I'm fearing for Peeta's life, both because of Kat's feelings for Gale, because I doubt she's going to end up with Peeta forver and ever, yet if he dies in the Games he'll have been made so happy by getting to be with her even for that short time, instead of being bitterly disappointed once they go back, and because there's just Cato left. Two against one isn't very sporting, no matter how fierce the opponent. It would take away from Kat's win if she has Peeta helping her. :/ Maybe if he were still feverish and weak, it would be acceptable, because then he'd be more of a burden than a help, but now they've taken care of his infection (which, what? His wound sounded so bad I thought Kat was going to have to cut off his leg). I suspect Cato is going to kill Peeta and then Kat and Cato will have to battle it out.
So much speculation! So few pages left! If only they approved of reading YA books while at work.
I was picking up sandwiches for dinner w/ my mom, K., and family last night and the girl behind the counter was like, "Are you enjoying that? I just finished the second book and it's SOOOOO GOOD!" Sheesh, how did everyone know about this series except me?
K. has requested that her husband and I make an Indian dinner for her and my mom on Sunday, Mother's Day. It will probably be very similar to the one I made before, except chicken tikka masala instead of makhani, roti instead of naan, and add a dal. Except... crap, I've just remembered that K. is currently on a dairy-restricted diet because her nursing baby is on it so she has to do it too. I don't think Indian cuisine is a very good choice if you're restricting dairy... I mean, all the best stuff has cream or yogurt in it! Hmm, will have to check and see if she really still wants to do this, and if so, I may have to substitute dairy-less dishes for a couple of the ones I was planning to make. That makes it not as good for the rest of us, though.
