Winter is coming...

Typing this is a little difficult right now, because I went to the eye doc this morning and had my eyes dilated. I'm also making a big fashion statement with the fake sunglasses they gave me.
Well my two big projects are over, and I'm enjoying the short lull before the next two start. Moderate cheer!
I am in love with a song called "Fireflies" by Owl City.
The last two days,
romanticalgirl's hubby has been helping me set up a bed in my garden where I will hopefully start growing veggies! Yay! I think he's almost done, just need to fill in the top with some compost/soil, and then ... well, then I'm not quite sure how ready it is, what else I need to do before I start planting things, but it's practically the next step. So exciting. I wish it were spring instead of fall, though. I'm a total newb obviously, and since it's October, I'm probably going to just start by planting some garlic, which you're supposed to plant in the fall, and possibly some kale. I need to run to HPB and pick up a couple of gardening books. When the bed is done, I'm going to take pictures and show y'all what a great job he did! Wheee, garden!
Tonight my cousin and I are going to Union for dinner. They're participating in this month's 3-for-$30 deal, and she loves Ethan Stowell restaurants. We've said that we're going to try and go to as many of the participating restaurants as possible during the month, with a minimum of 4. :D
I don't know how many of you are like me, but I prefer hardback books to paperback. They're more satisfying (though less convenient) to read, somehow. Anyway, when I realized that I loved the ASoIaF series, I decided to get them all in hardback. I got a $5 copy of A Game of Thrones on Amazon or Half.com, and when it arrived, guess what I realized? It's a "silver first" that GRRM talks about on his site! I don't think it's worth as much these days, and my copy isn't in pristine condition, but still. The real silver first, by total coincidence. Doubt the seller knew what s/he had.
So anyway, speaking of ASoIaF, I'm more than 3/4 of the way through A Storm of Swords!
- Wow, the way Robb died was totally horrible and shocking. And yet, can't say I'm sorry. He deserved it. Or at least came as close to deserving it as anyone can, in such a situation. He fucked himself when he fucked Jeyne, and used his penis to make his decisions for him. Not even minor decisions -- huge, irrevocable, game-changing decisions. Don't fuck over your ally. That's an important rule when you're in a war. Don't fuck over someone whose loyalty isn't set in stone, who is currently your ally -- that might be rule #1. As a king -- even as Lord of Winterfell -- Robb's duty was to his people and their cause, not his feewings.
- Saddest thing about Rob dying is the death of Grey Wind.
- Is Catelyn really dead? Can't tell. We didn't really see it happen, so that in itself makes me have doubts, and for a long time when other characters discussed it, they only said that it was "rumored" she had died as well. However, we SEEM to have gotten confirmation when someone said that they'd thrown her naked body into the river or something. So maybe she really is dead. I wouldn't be sorry about that either. She's always been somewhat grating, and I've always hated her for her attitude about Jon. Even at the last, when she wanted to pass the Stark legacy to some far-distant, random relatives rather than NED'S SON! How could she hold that much hatred in her heart? Can't like someone like that. Also, she fucking freed Jamie Lannister and fucked over Karstark's desire for vengeance (which again made their allies turn against them), and then ever after that wanted Theon Greyjoy's blood/her own vengeance for Bran/Rickon, and screw what anyone else wanted. What a hypocrite. I hope she really is dead.
- Jon actually proved himself a fitter liege/king than Robb when he faced the same situation and chose duty/honor over his penis. Good job, Jon. I hope the paper Robb had his council members sign WAS designating Jon as his heir, and he didn't change his mind in between that point and his conversation with Catelyn.
- Not sorry Ygritte is dead either. She annoyed me.
- Sansa IS Robb's rightful heir though. Wonder if it's now going to be a big power struggle between her and Jon and Dany and Edric Storm for Westeros. Not that Jon would really want it, of course. He'd only do it if it was the right thing to do. Oh, and of course, if Jeyne isn't pregnant. Because of it's a son (or maybe even a daughter?), s/he would actually be the rightful heir to Winterfell, right?
- Speaking of Sansa, she's -- or at least her situation -- has definitely gotten more interesting. Didn't see her marriage to Tyrion coming. Didn't see that her true rescuer would be Littlefinger, either. Though of course it's not wholly surprising, considering how much she looked like Catelyn and his weird moments with her. (Also, so did Catelyn really give her virtue to Petyr? He seems convinced of it, and not just bluffing. So she really has a lot of fucking nerve to be mad at Ned for his transgression/Jon.) For a split second I thought he was going to claim to be her father. I just hope some creepy romance doesn't develop out of this.
- Bran's storyline is still really boring. However, I really enjoyed the story Jojen told re: the Whent tournament when Rhaegar crowned Lyanna queeen of love and beauty. I just can't get enough of them.
- OK, now we've got some squire/young lord telling Arya that he was milk brothers with Jon, and that Jon's mother was someone name Wylla? Don't buy it. Maybe that's what he THINKS, because she was nursing Jon, but I'm still convinced he's Rhaegar/Lyanna's love child, and whoever this Wylla was, she was just a wet nurse that Ned found for him. As Rhaegar's son (too bad he looks like a Stark, though), Jon is actually the rightful ruler of the Seven Kingdoms, isn't he? Though being baseborn, that might dash away his claim, and it really is Dany.
- OMG Arastan is BARRISTAN SELMY!!! That is so cool!
- Joffrey's death was too kind for him. He needed to be tortured a good long time.
- Still not sure about Jaime. I do like that he doesn't have his father's ambitions, and has a warped kind of honor, but the fact that he wants Cersei so much and can't see the fact that she's a manipulative, skanky bitch kind of weighs him down. Plus, call me shallow, but he's got a stump now. :))
- I like Arya, but sometimes find her annoying, too. I feel bad for her in making it so far, in almost getting to be reunited with her brother and mother, and then their brutal murders get in the way. At least she has Sandor Cleagne as her protector now, though she doesn't see him that way.
- I like Davos, I think he's a good guy and wish him well, but I think I dread his chapters the most. It's just the most boring to go out to Stannis and Dragonstone, when Stannis is so blinded by Melisandre, and his 'sense of honor' is really kind of arbitrary. As Davos himself pointed out, did Stannis not commit treason when he fought with Robert to take the Targaryen throne? So really, don't get all uppity with other people about THEIR treasons/transgressions. You're no better. Also you're Melisandre's bitch.
- Meanwhile Jon's like, who the fuck CARES who's king when you're all going to be wights soon? God!
