OMG Angel. Top form tonight. So orgasmically good that I have to talk about it right now rather than waiting until tomorrow. While I'm at it, I suppose I could diss on Smallville, too.
Smallville: Seriously, this show needs to give up. I don't know why it insists on taking this hour out of my life and filling it with dreck. Week after week, it's the SAME TIRED EPISODE!!! They should rename the show to 'LANA.' Or better yet, 'KRISTIN.' It's a crime how little/ineffectively they've been using Lex this season. Though I give them props for this ep catering to all the ships. We got Clark/Lana, Lex/Lana (which was great), Clark/Chloe, Chloe/Lex. Clark/Lex seemed to be missing, but eh, we get that in all the other episodes.
I wanted to smack Lana around for being such a stupid cow, and I wanted to smack Clark around for making zero sense. Chloe was okay, and except for the opening scene, Lex was good.
And yet, next week's episode looks decent. If only I had any faith in them to carry it out beyond the teaser.
Angel: OMG -- best episode this season. Best episode since probably the middle of last season. THANK YOU, DREW GODDARD!!! Gee, so this is what's possible in the hands of a capable writer.
Spike. OMG Spike where have you been? Oh, there you are! Now I remember why I love you! Everything about Spike tonight was gold. Especially leaving Eve in the elevator. (Jade points out that she's still there, which is just too funny to be real.) And having to "concentrate" before helping Gunn out. "Shh. I have to concentrate." Hahahahahaha.
Meanwhile, Wes, unlike Lorne, proves he can carry an episode. Of course, he also had a good writer, but still. Funny, touching, and endearing ... I'd forgotten that I could actually like Wes this much. The only downer was the whole Fres stuff, which seemed a bit heavy-handed, but hey, if that's all I've got to complain about ...
Okay, that's not all. One other thing. V. minor, but I have to say it: I was disappointed when Wes's dad turned out to be a cyborg. It felt a bit like cheating. Because now they get all this relationship reparation between Angel and Wes, they solidify Wes as a Good Guy, etc., and yet ... what did they give up? Nothing. Oh sure, Wes thought it was his dad. But the fact that it wasn't, well, made it a little empty for me. Especially considering that it's not like we've ever seen his dad before, or that the guy is likely to play a significant role in the future. I suppose Wes killing his own father would be a really big deal -- perhaps too big -- but ... ehhhh.
And of course, Eve is never enjoyable. I think I really dislike the actress. What was w/ following Angel around like some little assistant? Who the hell is she? Why isn't Cordy mentioned, ever?
It's really hard to shock me, and many things about this ep surprised me (for the most part, in a good way), which is a really refreshing and lovely thing. The dialogue was sharp, the plot was tight, and there was a nice resolution to the whole Angel/Connor/Wes angst. *sighs in satisfaction*
And next week's episode ... DUDE. If it's as good as I'm anticipating, there will be another squeey post like this one, I'm sure. Oh joy and rapture.
