Mortal Instruments as a TV series!
Oct. 14th, 2014 02:51 pmApparently they're rebooting Mortal Instruments as a TV show!
Back when the movie released, I was incredibly disappointed. It was, unlike Maze Runner, a TERRIBLE adaptation. The look/feel was all wrong (they really overdid the glamorous gothic crap), at the expense of good storytelling (glossing over important plot and character developments). Basically they made an eye candy, fluffy movie, which was a total disservice to the book. Not that the book is some great work of literary art, but it's certainly better than the #@&$ the movie was. It actually pains me that some movie critics called it "a bad Twilight rip-off," which is so wrong because it is about 1,0000000000000000x better than Twilight. I've read both. I know. In fact, with the exception of those with dystopian plots, the MI series in terms of YA literature has one of the *most* sophisticated and interesting worlds and plotlines.
Before the movie had even released, I read that a sequel had been greenlighted by the production company. Then it bombed at the box office (and with fans), and the studio still stood by their desire for a sequel. Well apparently they had second, then third, then fourth thoughts about it... and now it's going to be a TV show. (I'm sure that could fall apart too, but hopefully not.)
I am really, really excited about this, because 1) I want to see a live action adaptation that actually does the book series justice; and 2) It's an opportunity to recast the characters, and when I say characters, I mean Jace, because Jamie Campbell-Bower could not have been more wrong for the role. Unfortunately, JCB had done TV just before MI, and is not exactly a celebrity who can afford to be choosy about his roles, so I realize there's a danger that he could reprise Jace. But I really, really, REALLY hope not. Hopefully one of the studio's learnings was that he wasn't right for the role. I have no idea if they have hard evidence about audience sentiment; it's purely hope based solely on my own belief that he is one of the ugliest guys to ever get cast in a lead role.
And while they're recasting, I wouldn't mind if they recast Lily Collins as Clary. She was fine, but now she's indelibly linked with JCB, and frankly, she was always far too attractive for the role. Clary is supposed to be more of an everygirl. A pretty everygirl, but not Lily Collins. (But please not Bonnie Wright, although I would enjoy the poetic justice of that -- Bonnie winning the same role away from the girl who stole her fiancée. Her ugly, ugly fiancée.) And sadly, while they're at it, they should probably recast Robert Sheehan as Simon. Robert is just way too awesome, so watching the movie made me a very confused shipper. I don't want that. If they keep Robert as Simon, the new Jace better be REALLY compelling. (In fact, a fantastic Jace plus Robert as Simon would be must-see TV.)
My other recasting opinions: RECAST Alec, Valentine, Hodge. FINE TO KEEP Magnus, Izzy, Jocelyn.
