The Space Meme and other things
Aug. 2nd, 2003 03:32 amJust saw Seabiscuit. I recommend. I was very, very, VERY skeptical about this movie from the previews. I'm glad it proved me wrong. Of course, I did have dinner at El Greco beforehand, and yummy Greek food will put anyone in a good mood. :D
Driving the car I drive is sometimes a pain in the ass. It is gorgeous, yes, but gah. You get strange men honking at you to give you the thumbs up about your car. Security guards page each other exclaiming about it (yes, the security guys on my floor @ work told me the story today). You feel like you can't do anything in the car (like eat or groom) or look anything but your best, because people are looking at you. You're afraid to leave it places or park in spots that are so small the cars next to you have a chance of hitting your car when they open their doors. You guzzle gas like nobody's business.
The following meme contains information about me that may change your opinion of me. I suggest that you proceed with caution. Heehee.
You are being asked to join an expedition into space to help colonize a distant planet. This is very cool, but you'll have to survive the trip over -- which they say will take a year or possibly longer. As you can imagine, space is tight and resources are slim, so you'll be limited as to what you can bring.
You are allowed to bring 10 DVDs with you. Because they're relatively slim, a boxset of DVDs can count as 1 DVD. Which are you taking?
1. Angel S3*
2. Anne of Green Gables/Avonlea
3. Band of Brothers
4. Buffy S5*
5. Emma
6. Empire of the Sun
7. Fight Club
8. Newsies
9. Pirates of the Caribbean*
10. X-Files S6
* Assuming these are out by the time of launch. Otherwise, I'd go with Angel S2, LOTR:TTT, or Sense & Sensibility.
You can also bring 9 books. Unfortunately, books are rather bulky and take up precious space, so each individual book counts as 1 book. If you have a series of 9 books, that will use up your allotment. Which do you bring with you?
1. Beloved by Toni Morrison
2. Bridget Jones's Diary by Helen Fielding
3. Catch-22 by Joseph Heller
4. Dracula by Bram Stoker
5. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling
6. Joy Luck Club, The by Amy Tan
7. Paradise by Judith McNaught
8. Quaker City, The by George Lippard
9. Ready, Okay! by Adam Cadre
(I wish my choices were more intellectual, but alas, I know myself and I can only imagine being able to read these over and over again during the course of a year.)
Music is, of course, a must. Or maybe you prefer books on tape. Whatever your preference, you are allowed to bring 8 items in this medium (2 CD sets can count as 1 CD). What will you bring to groove to?
1. blink-182, Take Off Your Pants and Jacket
2. Garbage, Garbage
3. Good Charlotte, The Young and Hopeless
4. Legends of the Fall, soundtrack score
5. Linkin Park, Hybrid Theory
6. Les Miserables, 10th Anniversary
7. Tara MacLean, Silence
8. Tori Amos, Little Earthquakes
(Actually, I'd probably bring a bunch of mixes, but for the fun of the meme I tried to choose actual albums.)
You know that pretty soon, you'll start to miss reading fanfic if none was around. Luckily, you're able to sneak in a binder that will fit 7 of your favorite stories. Which ones are you including?
1. Draco Sinister by Cassandra Claire (HP)
2. Heart's Filthy Lesson, The by MustangSally & RivkaT (BtVS)
3. Mind Games by Spider (XF)
4. Our Winter by Jade Okelani (HP)
5. Polar Novel, The by Jen (Roswell)
6. Rising from Ashes by Arabella and Jedi Boadicea (HP)
7. Sea of Waking Dreams, The by Cinnamon (HP)
* if "Jewel of the Harem" by Anise is completed by then, I'd probably take that instead of one of those. :D
To conserve space, food choices will be limited. You're allowed to pick 6 of your favorite meals (a meal consisting of: 1 entree, 1 side, 1 beverage). Which do you choose? And remember, you'll have to eat these same 6 meals for a year or more!
1. blackened salmon, mashed potatoes, milk
2. New York steak, baked potato, virgin pina colada
3. steamed lobster, garlic cheese bread, orange juice
4. sushi, tempura, green tea
5. lasagne, green salad, orange juice
6. chicken enchiladas, refried beans, apple juice
Surely they wouldn't send you out to space without even a snack to munch on in between meals and staring out your window at the universe zipping by. And what about dessert? You can't be expected to live without that. And you're right; you get to choose 5 dessert/snack items as well. Decisions, decisions -- which ones make the cut?
1. white chocolate cranberry cookies
2. tiramisu
3. cannoli
4. Ruffles potato chips
5. orange & cream Dreamsicles
Even though this adventure is quite exciting, you know you'll be homesick from time to time. After all, the fun part will be the colonizing. Right now you're not even there yet. So what 4 items will you take with you as memorabilia from your time on Earth?
1. a photo album of family/friends
2. the Curious George stuffed animal I've had since I was a baby
3. Monopoly
4. a blanket my grandmother knitted
Okay, so it's going to be hard work. Doesn't mean you can't look your best, right? It's a little frivolous, but hey, we all need some frivolity in our lives. What 3 grooming tools are you sure to bring with you?
1. hairbrush
2. glossy lipstick from Sephora (flavored and light-feeling!)
3. nail file
Because you're really sneaky, you're able to slip 2 items into your bags that aren't on the Approved list. What are they?
1. digital camera
2. laptop*
* Assuming there will be a power supply; otherwise a pad of paper and a pen!
Finally, you're allowed to bring 1 other person with you. Assuming they agree to accompany you on this risky, challenging, and insane trip that's fraught with potential peril and discomfort, who is it going to be?
1. Probably my mom. But that's not a fun answer and I'm not at all sure that she'd agree to go. So, I'll say Tom Felton, because he should be hitting his sexual peak just as I'm hitting mine, and there will be no one else around. <eg> Yeah, that's right, he doesn't get a choice. I'm going into SPACE to colonize a PLANET. I should be able to get whatever I want.
<crickets chirping>
Oh, FINE.
Ummm ... I guess my non-lecherous choice is
jade_okelani, because we're less likely to kill one another, and more importantly, we agree on many food/movies/books, so it'll be like doubling what I can bring! <eg>
Then again, if we're too alike we'll start getting on each other's nerves. In which case, I should pick
ropo, because we are definitely not too alike. However, our differences may cause the killing of the other, so that's kind of a downer.
