I suppose that's true, he did have his mother's suicide to contend with. And Veronica helped with that, so of course he feels affectionate/grateful. In any situation like this, I always wonder what it'd be like if the thing that changed it all -- in this instance, Lilly dying -- never happened, or were reversed. If Lilly wasn't dead after all, how would it change their feelings? (Much like "what if Duncan weren't Veronica's brother after all?") What would the people they were then think about the people they've become; would they want to take it back if they could? (Well, Lilly certainly would. Hee.) And what about the new relationships they've formed, if they had to choose, what would they go with?
These are all pointless rhetorical questions, of course, since life doesn't work that way. (But what if they did?)
