I h8 neighbors. WoW questions.
Mar. 21st, 2005 12:56 pmIf there were a lot of noise coming from your neighbor's place, so much that "all the glass" in your house is "shaking," and it doesn't seem to abate, wouldn't you get fed up and talk to your neighbor after the first couple of days? Well, not if you're one of my jackass neighbors. Instead, you wait for two full weeks before coming to talk to me, and then you do it at 10pm so that I will probably ignore you, because I don't answer my door after dark. So either you're a total dumbass, or the problem isn't quite as terrible as you're making it out to be. Or both. I'm willing to go for both, in this case.
Here's the thing: It's not that loud to me. What they're hearing has to be me playing WoW, but I actually don't have my sounds turned up very loud. Those new speakers I got a few months back must be even more awesome than I thought. :D I think what's causing it is my subwoofer, so I'll disconnect that and turn regular sounds even lower than they are now, and hopefully it'll resolve their issues. (Though my dad doesn't think I should just cave to their whims, and should get a third party to confirm, blah blah.) Because look, I'm not an evil person. I will do what I can to help if I know the problem exists. I had no idea anyone could even hear me, much less to the extent that they're claiming (they're my upstairs neighbors). So don't wait two weeks to bring my attention to the problem and then come to me at 10pm all snippy.
But that's my neighbors for you. I'm surrounded on all sides by assholes. Did you ever see the episode "Arcadia" on XF? That's what my neighbors are like. I'm not saying I'm blameless, but these people are seriously deranged.
The larger problem here, of course, is that I need to buy a real house. A condo's just not cutting it. I'm sick of having neighbors who share my walls on all sides. I can't do stuff like Dance Dance Revolution, or apparently, even play a fucking computer game, without some high-strung person who thinks that because they have a new baby, they ought to be afforded more consideration than anyone else, complaining. (That's a whole separate rant.)
1) Horde vs Alliance? Jade and I were innocently going along on another quest last night, when suddenly she heard over the channels that Ashenvale was under attack by Horde. On our way to Astranaar, we passed several Horde players (one of them made a rude gesture at her, heehee!). They were 'green,' with PVP disabled. We saw a couple of 'yellow' PVP enabled players also. I saw a Sentinel chase down a Troll shaman. :)) My question, though, is -- can they hit me, if I'm PVP disabled?
It looked like I could have attacked the yellow dudes (the sword icon appeared while mousing over their character) ... but could they have attacked back? It wouldn't be fair if they couldn't, but I'm PVP disabled. Does that mean that if I were to attack one, it would change my status? Or, because we are natural enemies, Horde vs Alliance, we can attack each other at any time, and we should be grateful that the lvl 30 Orc Warrior did not immediately strike us down?
2) Successfully taking over a region. Is it even possible to successfully raid a region? Has anyone ever done it? If a mass of lvl 50+ Horde come into town and wipe out all the sentinels, etc., does it then become a Horde stronghold? Do the sentinels respawn? I assume actual players would then need to guard the area, as Horde sentinels won't automatically appear?
3) Marriage. Has anyone ever gotten married in-game? What does it do? Is it just a fun little bit of amusement, or are you actually obligated/tied in some way? What happens if someone proposes and you say yes? I didn't even know someone COULD propose. I went with Jade to Ironforge last night, and while I was standing around waiting for her to complete her auction stuff, this player 'whistled' at me. This sort of silliness happens often enough that I didn't think anything of it, but then he came up to me and gave me a whole bunch of things, like conjured water and food (
akscully later explained that that stuff goes away after you log off, since it's conjured). I said thanks...
And then he got down on one knee and proposed! He had a diamond engagement ring and everything. I was like, wtF. It was so completely nutty. I was tempted to say yes, just to see what would happen (and hey, I could do worse than a lvl 60 human mage), but then I didn't want to obligate myself in some way (what if he were like my stalker from earlier???), since I didn't know what 'marriage' entailed. So I declined, saying that I hardly knew him well enough to be marrying him. Then he called his horse to him, I praised his mount, he called me a sexy devil, and that was that.
NUTTY.
4) Expert fishing. I hear that the only place where you can get the book to become an expert fisherman is in Stranglethorn Vale ... but I don't think I'm nearly high level enough to try and make that trek. Why do they make it so hard to become an expert fisherman?!
5) Pictures! This one isn't so much a question, as it is I just want to share a few pictures. <g> You can see my game character in my current icon. Here's one of my pet. I have had several pets over the course of the game, all named after male HP characters. The shortest-lived pet was Neville the Raptor, who was useless to me. My most loyal and powerful pet (and of course, my favorite), is Zacharias, a nightsaber. I knew him from when he was a wee baby lvl 9 or so, and now we're both 25. I love him! Here he is:

Also, here's an icon of
akscully. Notice how she's WEARING NO SHIRT and SHOWING OFF HER BREASTESES. It's just like real life.

I didn't have any good shots of Jade's character, but I'm sure she'll be sharing her own, anyway. :D
Also, I randomly got a blue axe yesterday from killing a raptor. W00t!

Date: 2005-03-21 09:15 pm (UTC)All this talk of WoW makes me wish I had a better computer. And, y'know, the cash for a monthly fee.

Date: 2005-03-21 10:17 pm (UTC)I have to say, I balked at the $15/month until I realized how much I was playing it. And then it was like ... the best $15 I ever spent. And I haven't even paid it yet! The first month is free. So, yeah. Instead of spending a lot of money elsewhere, since now I don't have the urge to go out and shop and buy a lot of crap, or even to eat at regular restaurants by myself, I'm actually saving money. <g>
Anyway, it's probably best that a mommy/student not have this game. You'd never take care of the things that were more important!

Date: 2005-03-21 09:23 pm (UTC)I found the latter out the HARD way. I healed someone in a PVP fight. Oops, my low level Tauren Druid is suddenly PvP enabled! eeek! I ran away and the logged out to look up in the book what I needed to do. When I logged back in, I was dead, but I got back to my body and hid until the flag went away, which is 5 minutes, I think. A good time to take a flight path to somewhere out of the way!
If you're on a PvP server, then anyone from the opposite faction can attack you AT ANY TIME. No flags. RP servers are like PvE servers.
2) Everything respawns. So there's no way a place can change to another faction. At least, not with the current setup!
3) bwahahahahahaha! On Llane in the WoW forums, there is a 60 lvl human mage (female) and a 60 lvl Tauren warrior who are getting married! It's hysterical. I want to be at the wedding.
I know nothing about the in-game consequences of it.
4) YES AND IT'S A PAIN IN THE ASS. Find someone else to buy it for you and have them send it to you COD. I had a friend buy me the expert cooking book and send it to me.
Oh, wait!! No, the book you want for expert fishing is in Booty Bay! Both factions can buy it. Do you know about Thottbot? Go there for the answers to most of your questions. I had to trek to get Skylear there to buy it - that was my long trek with
And boo to your neighbors! boooo!

Date: 2005-03-21 09:59 pm (UTC)I do know about Thottbot, that's where I found that I was supposed to go to Stranglethorn Vale! I may try the route you're talking about, or else just buy the book at the AH if I can.
I have a ton of money right now (well, not a ton, but for someone who used to think getting 1G was impossible, quite a bit), so purchasing it shouldn't be a concern.
I figure I should start saving up for my mount early. ;)

Date: 2005-03-22 01:32 pm (UTC)If you want an escort to Booty Bay, I will be willing to help you. I may be only 10th level, but I know the Barrens like the back of my hand. I can try to meet you in Darkshore, and you can escort me through there and Ashenvale, keeping me alive *hee*, and then I can take you through the Barrens to Ratchet.
I did forget to mention one other way you can go PvP. If you get too close to a Horde town. The guards will come after you, and flag you PvP. So stay away from Horde towns!
My husband found this out the hard way. He didn't want to kill the entire town of low level humans, but he needed his Tauren to get to the other side of it, and the mountains were so close he couldn't go around. He aggro'd the whole town. He tried to run away, but they were faster than him, and kept slowing him down and plinking away at his health.
So he killed the entire town. He was quite upset to have to do it, too. He didn't WANT to do it...he said he was stunned afterwards, looking around at all the bloody bodies.
Then a lower level hunter showed up and tried to kill him, and he didn't want to kill him either, but he wouldn't let him pass (and you can't talk across faction), so he killed him then ran away as fast and far as he could.
My poor boo.

Date: 2005-03-22 05:01 pm (UTC)That is super funny about your husband and the massacring. They're still talking about it to this day. He will live on in human lore, feeding their bitterness at the Horde until one day they rise and ... well, you see where I'm going.

Date: 2005-03-21 09:28 pm (UTC)If their names are yellow, they're in PVP mode. If you're not in PVP mode, they can't hit you, but if you attack them or heal someone who's attacking them, you are put into PVP mode and then they can attack you. Once you're in PVP mode you can't turn it off until you've not attacked anything for 5 minutes. But if you felt the desire, you could stand around and watch them get beat down, pointing and laughing, and there'd be nothing they could do about it unless you went PVP.
Short answer is, no. Sentinals and NPCs have spawn timers just like other NPC mobs, so they'll just keep repopping until the Horde people get bored and go away. There's been talk of an expansion called Battlefields, which would allow Horde and Alliance to fight and take over towns, etc, but I don't know if it's out yet.
3) Marriage. Has anyone ever gotten married in-game?
I have in Everquest, but not in WoW. It's basically a social construct, just like joining a guild...sort of like roleplaying. You aren't obligated, it doesn't grant special status to you, all you get is a nifty diamond ring if the guy has the cash, and someone to hang and chat with. (And, hopefully, you've hung with and chatted with the person before, so you know if you like them!)
4) Expert fishing. I hear that the only place where you can get the book to become an expert fisherman is in Stranglethorn Vale ... but I don't think I'm nearly high level enough to try and make that trek. Why do they make it so hard to become an expert fisherman?!
Because you gots to be high level to get your skill up so high! :D Actually, if you're 30th level or so, the trek isn't that bad. Easiest way is through Ashenvale to the Barrens, then through the Barrens to Ratchet and take the boat to Booty Bay. The guy who sells the book is there, and then you can either boat back, or take a griff to Stormwind, then to Ironforge, then to Menethil Harbour, and catch the boat back to Darkshore. Or go to Darkshire and hunt there, as it's a decent place if you're around mid-20s.

Yeah. The answer would be a big, fat NO on the dude who asked. So that's why I was leery, even if curious. I don't know why anyone lvl 60 would want to play with a lvl 25 anyway ... though I suppose after you're lvl 60, there's not much else to do but amuse yourself like that! :))
I'm already at 150 for fishing, and can't move any farther w/o the expert cookbook ... mostly because of a few fishing quests that I had to do.
I think you're right, best thing is to just get it at the AH, so that all the fishing I do in the interim won't be for naught. :D

Date: 2005-03-21 10:08 pm (UTC)At least your's complained because of actual noise. Before I moved out of that hell hole, I had a freak living downstairs that would come up to my apartment screaming when I dropped a pencil on the floor- which was carpeted. I kid you not.
Either she would come up to my apartment yelling or she would hit her roof, my floor with a bat, making 100x more commotion than I could have ever made with my pencil.
I guess you could say I caved, because I ended up moving, but that woman was seriously a freak.

Date: 2005-03-21 10:20 pm (UTC)Yeah, I feel the same way about moving/letting them win. I don't like caving. But I can't take it anymore. It'd probably be a better investment to have a single-family home vs a condo anyway, so I'm going with that.
Living in this world, principle only gets us so far. I'm sure you're glad you moved, and I will be too. :D

Give those places a try, you might find that you want to build something totally different! And if you have specific questions, feel free to ask, though I can't guarantee I'll know the answer -- but I might! Also, any knowledge I have is Component-specific, so if you decide to go with a different layout, I'll know nothing.
Good luck and have fun!
