Okay, I'm a little more excited by March Madness now, because I love contests!
selinakyle47 is holding one, and you can get the details here. You don't have to do anything to enter but fill out a bracket, and you get to win LJ time/fic! So you don't have to know anything about basketball to give it a shot -- just pick the names you like best, or something. <g>
The play-in game is today, so if you turn in your bracket before tip-off, there's a chance for an extra point. Otherwise, the 'true' tourney starts on the 17th, which is coming up quick!
My selections are a bit random, as I just have no clue this year (not that it helps me overly much even when I do think I have a clue).

And for my final fan author appreciation...
Saturday pick: Jade Okelani (
jade_okelani)
Fandom: The X-files, Harry Potter, Smallville, etc.
I almost didn't do Jade, because it's just so daunting. But I guess that wouldn't be a good reason to leave her out, huh? Hmm, what can I say about Jade without sounding like a geeky fangirl? I guess nothing. So yeah. I like Jade's writing, read her work. The end.
But I guess she deserves a little more.
As I mentioned previously, I met Jade through a friend of a friend. I had enjoyed her XF stories, especially the series she'd done with Brandon, called Subtext. Another favorite was Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening -- a little angstier than her normal XF fare (but interestingly, perhaps right on par with her more current work). I didn't follow Jade to the Whedonverse fandom, primarily because we didn't ship the same ship, but I've beta'ed her fic, and somehow, she even makes fic I'm not interested in, interesting. Probably my favorite story of hers in the Whedonverse is Echo, which is Xander/Cordelia.
That's the thing about Jade's writing ... it's so clever and meaningful and yet, seemingly effortlessly done. She was always a good writer, but she's grown by leaps and bounds in just the time I've known her, and now she's a great writer. I managed to coerce her into Smallville, which was awesome because there were sooooo few Lex/Lana shippers at the time that we were into it. Who was going to write Lex/Lana if not us? It was so nice to have someone who could write fabulous Lex/Lana when I most wanted it, like the Storms of Change series. <g>
And then there's Harry Potter. Jade's writing in HPverse can be summed up in two words: Our Winter. While writing this, I keep getting messed up between Friend!Jade and Author!Jade, but OW is the epitome of both. She wrote it because I was complaining about how I had read all the good D/G there was to read after devouring the DT (it wasn't true, but it takes a whole lot of time to find all the good D/G stories, wouldn't you agree?), and so she said, give me some elements and I'll write a fic for you. And the fic turned out to be a novel. A wonderful, sexy, emotional, entertaining novel. <333 And since then, she's only written even more stuff that I love, like Life Canvas and Call of the Wolf (Snape/Lupin).
What I admire most about Jade as a writer is her ability to flesh out any character and ship, and be absolutely spot on about their characterization, regardless of her own personal interest in it. That's a formidable talent, one I wish I had, and one that Jade possesses in spades.
I am thankful to know someone who embodies (to me) the true essence of a writer, and whose stories I enjoy so much.

This was possibly the closest vote yet. Draco will likely follow in his father's footsteps, eh? Well, there are good parts and bad parts to that... What's in store for our bad boy next?

My shoulder hurts from being on a computer/using a mouse so much. (Though I leveled up to 19 last night, and my pet is 18! Pictures soon.) I saw my new masseuse on Friday, and I've already undone all her work. :( I might have to schedule something sooner than my normal 6-week interval. She's v. new agey and I'm not, but she's also really flexible, which is cool. On Friday she didn't have anything better to do, so my massage was for an hour and a half! I fell asleep. I don't know if I've ever fallen asleep during a massage before. One time, I even jerked awake. Tres embarrassing.

Date: 2005-03-15 10:31 pm (UTC)How can you have U of IL bowing out in the first round?!? I'm showing it to my hubby, the Illini alum. :P

Date: 2005-03-15 11:01 pm (UTC)Well, I did make a caveat that I don't know what I'm doing this year, right? But I could have sworn I have Illinois bowing out in the second round, not the first ... in my small defense. <g>
