Fanfic Author Appreciation Week: Day One
Mar. 6th, 2005 11:35 pmFanfic Author Appreciation Week: You post a fave author for each day, March 6 through the 13. Tell why you picked them, give some links to their fic, say why you love them, their work, why they need more appreciation, and just wax poetic about your favorite authors for the entire week.
Honestly, there aren't enough days in the week to really do this right. I've spread my selections across fandoms, so that it's more rounded and better reflects my interests through the years and what's influenced me. Hopefully you'll get the inclination to check out some of these authors and their work. I'm letting Jade take care of some of the other authors I'd include, but for the fact that weeks aren't 10 days long. <g>
Sunday pick: Cassie Claire (
epicyclical)
Fandom: Harry Potter
Cassie isn't exactly underappreciated, but she absolutely had to be included. I don't think there's anyone whose work has influenced me (or Jade) in Harry Potter fandom the way hers has -- given the fact that her epic story is what got us interested in Draco/Ginny in the first place. In fact, for us, Cassie gave HP fandom credibility, period. Prior to reading the Draco Trilogy, we had only ever stumbled across terrible, terrible stories we couldn't run away from fast enough. Cassie made me think, "Okay, so there are good writers in HP fandom; I just have to find them." And eventually, with time and patience, I did. But if it weren't for her, I wouldn't have bothered to look after those first aborted attempts.
I enjoy Cassie's writing very much; she's witty and intriguing and refreshing. She makes me care about her characters and breathes real life into them. I don't think I love or hate characters more intensely than I do in her stories. <g> She shows rather than tells, an art every good writer should try and master, and best of all -- she makes me laugh.
I also admire the way she deals with her legions of fans and detractors. She's certainly a lot more tolerant and gracious than I imagine I'd be in her shoes.
As for her stories, I doubt there's anyone out there who hasn't at least heard of her fic, whether or not you enjoy them, but I'll mention my favorites anyway. They are, of course, all D/G relevant. First, there's the Draco Trilogy, which made me a Draco/Hermione shipper for about half a second. I don't like to think about those dark times. Then there's A Lot to Be Upset About, which made me and Jade laugh until we cried. And last, but certainly not least, there's Written (NC-17), a simply gorgeous vignette.
And that's pretty much all I have to say about that.
