I know I should be reading, and not typing about what I'm reading but I can't help it, I want to make sure I get my thoughts down in case I forget later!!

- OK, wtf Ned, you can only take honor so far and then it starts to look like you're just being stupid. Seriously, he seems to trust all the wrong people, and then looks down on all the people who try to actually help him because it's not the most honorable of ways -- like, say Lord Renly. I mean, go him for not compromising on principles, but how many chances was he going to give Cersei? And knowing what she was capable of, how could he not have been disquieted by her total lack of fear in her situation and even confessing everything to him? Did he underestimate her just because she was a woman?

- Go Arya! I love that she didn't even think of Sansa at all when she was escaping, lol.

- Which is a good thing, since Sansa is a stupid little toad! She's just so vain and immature. I hope she actually gets to be self aware at some point, or gets her come uppance.

- I really hope what's his name, Arya's water dancing master or whatever, lived. I love how he was just in the woodwork and then he went all Matrix on those Lannister dudes.

- Can't help but feel sorry for Robert to die that way, gored by a boar, sheesh.

- I can't believe Jon actually took the black. :( I was sort of hoping he'd decide at the last minute that it had made a man out of him, but he didn't actually want to give up a normal life -- whatever that means. Sounds like while he couldn't have inherited lands or anything, he still could have made something of himself outside of the Night's Watch. Now he's going to be a virgin forever! Never know the touch of a woman or sire sons! Sadness. But also, cool that he is being groomed to be commander. :D

- Getting bored with Bran. Still feel bad for him and all, but not really all that interested in what's going on with him/at Winterfell.

- Haven't seen Catelyn for a long time. Tyrion either. Given everything that's going down, kind of interested to know what's going on with them. Does she feel proud about what she did now that it's all come down around their heads? Yeah, still don't like her.

- Thought has occurred to me that maybe Jon isn't even Ned's son. Maybe he's *Brandon's* bastard? Since he looks like him? But no, that wouldn't make sense... or would it? By the time Catelyn went to Winterfell, Jon was already there with his wet nurse. He and Robb are very close in age. Maybe Brandon impregnated someone and they had the baby after he died? Gasp ... or maybe Jon is LYANNA'S son! Maybe that's the secret she wanted Ned to keep, and that's why he's so close-lipped about Jon's mother. OMG, that must be it!! Maybe Jon is Lyanna's son, and that of one of the Targaryens... possibly Rhaegar? Maybe they were having a love affair!

- Really hope Ned is imprisoned and not dead, because I'd really like to know the answer.

- Viserys died a horrible death, but it was really no more than he deserved. Interested to see whether Dany is now going to try to pursue the throne on her own/on her son's behalf. I mean, I suppose SOMETHING has to happen there, or else why even have them in the story?

- I want a direwolf. I'd name her... Gossipywhore. (How funny is Shaggydog, btw?)

I'm on page 581/807.

OK, back to reading. Will just update this post when I finish.

Update, 9/17, 6:30pm

-Ned remembered the moment when all the smiles died, when Prince Rhaegar Targaryen urged his horse past his own wife, the Dornish princess Elia Martell, to lay the queen of beauty's laurel in Lyanna's lap. He could see it still: a crown of winter roses, blue as frost.

...

Promise me, Ned, his sister had whispered from her bed of blood. She had loved the scent of winter roses.

OK. Jon is SO the son of Lyanna/Rhaegar. And now I'm going to be a geeky Rhaegar/Lyanna fan, even though I know it all ends horribly.

Also? Bed of blood = birthing bed. I can't remember what it said earlier in the book about how Lyanna died. I'm going to have to reread that part.

I know I shouldn't ship them, that it's wrong, that I should feel really sorry for Elia Martell, because that would be really hurtful and humiliating. Then again, I don't know anything about Elia, she could have been just like Cersei or something.

And if it's true...does this mean that Jon actually has the most rightful claim to the throne, not Stannis Baratheon? Does the fact of him being a bastard matter? Because if he's the last living son of Rhaegar, and if the Targaryens should actually be the rulers of the Seven Kingdoms, then he has more right to the throne than even Dany or her baby, right? Again assuming that his being a bastard doesn't matter.

- Speaking of Dany, I can't decide if her sudden desire to reclaim the Seven Kingdoms is in character or not. That was always her brother's thing, not hers. She always seemed to just want to go back to the house w/ the red door. I mean, she's never even stepped foot in the Seven Kingdoms before. Bringing an army to regain that doesn't really seem like her from what we've seen of her so far. Then again, mothers do tend to have great ambitions for their kids.

- Those dragon eggs are SO going to turn into dragons. And if she has those under her command as well as Khal Drogo's army, I don't see how she could lose. PLUS she has a rightful claim to the throne, if Jon's claim (assuming his father to be Rhaegar) is weak due to being a bastard.

- OK, have seen Catelyn & Tyrion again ... not really that interesting. My like of Tyrion is troublesome, because he's a loyal Lannister, and yet worthier than most of them, I think. I suppose I just have to hope that his sense of self preservation is stronger than his sense of House loyalty.

- That is, if this book ends with the Lannisters getting foiled.

- Poor Ned, having to think on how his mercy (for Cersei, God knows why) helped killed Robert and his men, and possibly his daughters, and possibly his whole family besides. Varys pretty much called him on all the stuff I would have. Still, I hope he doesn't decide to kowtow NOW after all that's happened. As in, swearing allegiance to Cersei/the Lannisters. Not for stupid SANSA.

Update, 9/18, 7:30pm

- OMFG that little shit killed Ned!!!!! And he's not even the true king!!! And all to save that stupid little Sansa, omg. Who was the one who betrayed them all in the first place. IT'S ALL SO UNFAIR.

- For a sadly short, delightful moment, I totally thought Arya was going to pull off some crazy thing and actually save Ned. If only this were Pirates of the Caribbean and Orlando Bloom was there.

- Well if Dany wants to come back and take the throne from THIS little asshole I'd be fine with it.

- BUT OMG NOW HOW WILL WE EVER FIND OUT THE TRUTH ABOUT JON'S MOM?! Ned was, in theory, the only person who knew!!

Update, 9/18, 9:30pm - DONE AT LAST

Wow, well, I find myself kind of speechless. The first thing that comes to mind is, all the kids have certainly grown up, haven't they? LOL... Well, at least Robb, Jon, and Daenerys.

Okay, some key points...

- The "birth" of the dragons was super cool. I mean, I knew they were going to hatch at some point, and the pyre seemed an obvious choice, but still, how it all went down was totally epic, especially the last "scene." I'm sure there must be fanart somewhere for that. When Targaryens can command dragons, it's no wonder they were rulers. I mean, that's even cooler than direwolves, and those are already super cool.

- What happened with Drogo was unbelievably sad. It's not like I was a big Dany/Drogo shipper or anything, but he seemed a decent guy and all that happened was just horrible. Given that the maegi (sp) woman ended up having hatred in her heart, are we supposed to believe that he died because she deliberately dressed his wound poorly in the beginning, or because he refused to listen to her council and removed her stuff and put on the other healers' stuff?

- Was Dany's deformed baby supposed to imply that it was like, part dragon or something?

- Also, in addition to commanding the coolest animal/creature, she also has the coolest name. Daenerys Stormborn. I want to be Sarea Stormborn!

- Jon has exactly the right combination of heart, smarts, and honor. I was torn about his attempted desertion -- on the one hand, I thought it was the right thing to do; on the other hand, the penalty for desertion is death. Of course, he ended up going back, but now I'm concerned that his storyline and the other storylines will be totally apart for ages. I want to see him interact with the political intrigue figures, damn it. Mostly I guess because there's a better chance of figuring out who his mom was. :D

- Though I'm sure that will come in time. I'm just impatient. With all the crap happening south, it's hard to really get into the whole Others/beyond the Wall thing.

- FINALLY Sansa is starting to wake up. Woot.

- WTF is Yoren going to do with Arya? Bad things, or is he actually a good guy or something? He's a Night's Watch member, isn't he? How is it that he came to be away from the Wall? I can't remember.

- As for Robb... wow, starting to get the hots for him. :)) Very impressive, what he did, I must say.

- Oh shut UP stupid Catelyn, you think there can possibly be peace now?! I really dislike how wishy washy she is; she seems to change her opinion not due to any real logic but just by however the wind happens to be blowing. We saw that early on, too -- she was the one who was totally insisting that Ned couldn't turn down Robert's request to be Hand -- she thought the whole direwolves thing was an ill omen, and then Bran falls and suddenly screw the omen, Ned just can't leave, blah blah.

- OMG Ned dies, which means Sean Bean will leave the series probably in the first season of the HBO show!! Noooooooooooo!

- I liked old Lord Frey. I mean, I think it's totally disgusting that he's 90 and has a 16-year-old wife, but he's amusing. And at least he threw in w/ the Starks instead of his usual wait-and-see. It'll be amusing (I hope) and interesting to see which of his granddaughters (great-granddaughters?) Robb takes as his wife.

- WTF with Lord Renly declaring himself king? Is he greedy for the throne or does he know something about Stannis that we don't? Or is it just a way to fight the Lannisters?

- I really like the connection between Old Bear Mormont/Jon and Jorah Mormont/Dany. I could almost ship Jon/Dany, except if he's actually Rhaegar's son, that'd be like, nephew/aunt and that would be kind of creepy. :))

- I can't believe only 4 books out of a planned 7 are complete. >< I bet the reveal on Jon's mother won't come until book 6 or 7, so GRRM better get crackin'!
