I had an 8am conference call with Germany this morning, which means that I got an hour less sleep than usual (which isn't enough to begin with). I think this entitles me to some LJ time. Last night my DSL wasn't working for some reason (am hoping it was a one-time thing, and not a problem w/ the computer), but instead of using the time to clean or do anything productive (my mom's coming in this weekend so I have to make sure that everything is as clean as possible), I talked to Jade on the phone, watched Bend It Like Beckham (<3) and my two TV shows, and played Spider Solitaire (at the "Stephen Hawking level" as Robbie terms it -- have still not won a game at that level, but I did finally clear a row, which is something).

[livejournal.com profile] weekend_soul's recent experience reminded me of the death-defying crash that Jade and I went through in April ... I didn't know a lot of you then, but if you want to hear about what happened to us, it's here. It's totally funny to read about it now ... Jade wrote it up like it was some comedic occurrence, and while we do have a tendency to laugh at ourselves, I think part of it was that it was just too scary. I mean, a branch could have easily pierced our skulls. And when I think about how I laughed at my dad for insisting on buckling in the TV to the backseat, and how if he hadn't it probably would have fallen forward and crushed my head, I freak out a little bit.

Anyway, on to important matters, like TV. I tend to post reactions to everything I watch, so now that the fall season has started, you'll be exposed to that. (And I also start making my subjects lines from episodes.) But don't worry, I use cut tags, so you can skip right on by if you're not interested. And luckily, I'm only following three shows this season: AtS, Smallville, and Friends.

Smallville: Oh, I had such high hopes when the episode started out with a Good Charlotte song, despite Clark's hair (for the love of God, CUT IT). The first season of this show was pretty strong, but last season blew. And from what I saw of this first ep, I don't have high hopes that it'll be much of an improvement.

Crazy!Lex is all v. well and good, but wtf is going on with Helen? Or his dad? It's all gray, and while I normally like gray, it's gray in a bad way. At least MR seems to have put on some pounds; he looked built. Mmmm. I hate Helen. She's lame, I don't buy her and Lex's "love," and I wish she'd have died in the plane crash. The ONE moment in the entire episode that might have saved the whole thing would have been if, when Crazy Jungle Guy talked about the girl that Lex couldn't stop thinking of, he was talking about Lana instead. Or if Lana had showed more sadness at Lex being dead. I mean, Lex/Lana was so wonderfully subtextual in the first season, enough for me and Jade to create a Web site dedicated to that ship (hey, it was pretty successful until we stopped updating it; the WB kept sending us books to review on the site and such), and now it's just nonexistent. And there's nothing else keeping me there.

What is with Chloe's hair, for instance? Didn't they learn their lesson when they gave that cut and color to Cordelia? That was the start of the downslide for Cordy, if you ask me. I'm so bored of the whole Lana-Clark-Chloe thing. Clark is an ass. (And was it really necessary for him to rip his shirt of every. time. his chest started hurting? Just TAKE OFF THE DAMN RING, the shirt doesn't need to be ripped off. Jesus.) And I'm sorry, they built the Clark/Lana relationship all wrong. You can't go from UST to love in two episodes. Retarded.

And the overall writing was sooooo clunky. Could it have been more glaring when they all kept talking about the three months that had passed? And now it's Jonathan Kent with super powers? Eye. roll.

AtS: Oh, I'm so glad this came after Smallville, because if it had come first Smallville would have been even worse. Okay, I have no clue what's going on with the whole Wolfram & Hart thing, and them taking over. I'm sure it's just part of a whole larger scheme that I'm unaware of right now, but it all seems kind of iffy to me. IT MAKES NO SENCE. But that aside ...

Am done with Fred/Wes/Gunn. Was never that interested in this triangle to begin with, but now I am just done. There is nothing there. It's over. Kaput. No tension ANYwhere. I don't know if it's Fred or what, as I think I do see her as asexual. Maybe something can happen with her little assistant dude, Nox/Knox? (That name reminds me of Knox Overstreet, played by the lovely Josh Charles in Dead Poets Society. <g>)

Wes was just kind of ... there, this episode. Heehee @ him going evil sooner than Angel expected. Same with Lorne, who I still don't understand why needs to be in the opening credits. Gunn? Hot. Though what happened in the white room, exactly? Suspect that this will come into play later. And while I appreciate his new super lawyer brain, I also v. much liked Muscle!Gunn. I hope he doesn't go away. Don't like Eve. Find her annoying. Awww, poor Angel and his Connor angst. I really thought that they'd resolve that "more" this season. I thought they'd find a way for Connor to know Angel, but without all the bad blood. Am kind of disappointed that he's really just some normal well-adjusted kid now. How boring is that? Connor was HOT because of his humanity + random super powers, man!

It's slashy!Angel! Doesn't mind spanking men, indeed. Though I was a bit perturbed by the fact that he killed those special ops guys. I mean, granted, they were evil, but they were still human. Wasn't the big thing in S2 about how Angel left the evil lawyers to die, but it was wrong because they were human? Jade pointed out that they were sitting ducks, whereas these humans were actively threatening Angel ... but still.

Am v. happy about Harmony (best parts were the sad, swelling music re: Cordy and then the abrupt cut to her not caring anymore, and then the end, "Blondie Bear?"), though also a bit bitter because she's clearly serving Cordy's role as the say-anything-on-her-mind girl, and Cordy's absence was one of the clunkier parts of the ep.

Okay, best for last. Spike. Am a wee bit annoyed at the "dramatic" way they introduced him at the end. Like we didn't all know it was coming. Like they didn't do 10,000 promos of the episode telling us that Spike was going to be on it. Like JM wasn't in the opening credits. So they wait for the whooooooooole damn ep to pass by, and then at the end, like it's supposed to be some big surprise, here's Spike. But even those few predictable moments were great. Such is the power of Spike. And I wasn't sure exactly how the dynamic was going to work with Spike and the rest of them, but from what I saw of next week's promos, am v., v. excited. Wheeeeeee!

The one thing I do NOT want, however, is Buffy tension. I mean, a bit of it is inevitable, but it better not suck up all of their time/energy. I mean, Spike has reconciled to himself that she'll never love him, that she loves Angel. Plus, Buffy isn't THERE. I have no desire to see them both all alpha male-ing over her when it's completely pointless. I'm sure she'll show up at some point, but until then, let's keep that angst to a minimum. (I think this is where the fact that I don't really like Buffy comes in; if she's not onscreen, I couldn't care less about her.)

Neither of my managers appears to be in today. WTF am I doing here? I should be home taking a nap or cleaning.
